In your opinion, what is good writing?

what do you look for when you read something? what do you admire other people for? do you think your writing is good?

Before I fully read a story, I check out its summary at first. And for me, it starts with a nice summary, if it does attract my attention then there's a greater possibility that I'll read it or add it to my 'to read list' lol. I don't like stopping midway, ya see ;v; I also take into consideration the genre and AU, because I often stray away from common plots, I like reading really creative and unusual stories haha!

As for what I admire, I find it really cool when people can write a lot of chapters in just a short time. I'm a lazy bum so it'll take me forever to finish a story, oops. But yeah, personally I prefer quality over quantity, because you know how some chapters in a story looks rushed or something, yeah? Anyway, we all have our opinions so maybe that's just me lol.

i always look up for yuri or girlxgirl stories but i don't like gender benders and , unless the story plot is really good, i guess, i'll just put up with it. I also don't read ocxidol fics, idk, i just don't. I like and mysterious kind of stories. And good english is a plus for me, grammar isn't a big deal to me but yeah, I like good english.

Recently, I see a lot more of the idol pairings and pairings often these days and I'm starting to stray away from those kind of stories. Don't get me wrong, I fully support the LGBT community and I have subscribed to one or two idol pairings stories but I would much rather read a story with an OC and idol/actor. I want to be able to be in the OC's shoes and I find it more unique if the author creates the OC rather than just naming an idol/actor right off the bat.

What I really admire about authors is how fast they can produce a chapter. Like dude, I've written a twenty chaptered story in one month. I stayed up long nights until three in the morning just to finish and revise. The chapters are also pretty long because I like to be descriptive in my writing. I can no longer do it anymore. Ugh. PROPS TO THOSE AUTHORS!

I like to think my writing is okay. I'm still trying to 'perfect' it.

I'm looking for good characterization and pacing. I don't really mind the grammar bcs rofl I at that too. I also tend to read stories with oc so yeah I'll look out for those as well. I usually avoid stories with too much description because it gets my mind numb ._.

I admire several authors for their diligence tbh like ok how are you able to write a chapter in less than three days???? I take like a week to complete one ugh. Also, I really admire those who can be descriptive without writing too much. Since I'm not a native speaker, I really look up to those who can make the dialogues sound authentic and natural. Mine sound like someone stick a rod into their .

I believe that writing is not that bad, but it's not that good either. I have a long way to go, especially with my descriptive skills.

Well, this might sound silly, but one of the first things I have to have when I read something is interest. The AU or the setting or some aspect has to catch my attention or I won't invest my time in reading something. If you can get my interest, I'll give my best effort to read. Something that can make me stop reading instantly is a 'flawless' character. Nobody on this planet is perfect, and when there is a character that has no issues or flaws of any kind, I'm sorry but I'm out.

I admire other writers when they can pace things well. I'm struggling with pacing myself, so when I see others who can pace out a relationship perfectly, I'm super impressed. Ooh, and I love descriptions so much. Use your words to make me see the character or the setting as if it's in front of me or I'm in it, and I praise you for it.

Is my writing good? Honestly, after being a writer for about 2 years now, I do think I'm good. I'm not over here saying I'm the best, no, I'm far from it, but I think I do a good job. And I hope my readers think so too. ^^

there isn't really a specific set of story plots or characters that draw me in as a reader in this site, i can't really predict how i feel when i start reading a story. but i guess, readability? not perfect grammar but just good enough to make the reading flow naturally. and if the plot or the characters make actual sense, then i consider it good writing.

my favorite author is stephen king and i admire how he fleshes out his characters. they're all so recognizable and relateable and he's so amazing at depicting human emotions. he doesn't even use such flowery words yet his writing is so powerful.

nope, nope and nope. i have a lot to learn about writing and i need a whole lot of improvement

I try to write my stories in the same way that I like to read them; enticing summary, strong character development, interesting plot, or even just a simple plot with my favorite couple. Not every minute of a story has to be action or , but I think progressive dialogue is important to remember. Even holding oneshots to this standard can have a big impact on how readers look at you. As writers, we want people to think we can write anything well, or even attempt to write any genre thrown at us. I think good writing is something that is thought out in the long scheme of things. I'm not saying you have to know every detail of your story before you write, but at least knowing how the beginning and end will go will give you motivation if you hit the dreaded middle part writer's block. This has helped me many times when I didn't know what to do next on a story. And as writers of fanfiction, I admire so much the dedication of people who create extensive storylines, and in depth background character stories all in the name of fandom. That in and of itself is incredible.

the way the writer puts together words have to move me in some way. I prefer simplicity in writing, but I personally tend to add in way too much detail, so no, I don't consider myself a good writer.

Good writing is different for everyone, because everyone's mind works in it's own special way. I think for me, good writing is a writing that entices the reader from start to finish, even if there are slower segments, which most works have. Not every minute has to be filled with action or , but strong dialogue and character development can make or break a story. I've always been told that everyone judges the "back cover summary" to determine whether or not they will read, and I find this statement true, which has really encouraged me to try and make my summaries as persuasive to read as possible. Even can have a good story if you play your cards right. Also, if someone is writing about an event that took place, or an illness that exists, or something like that, I will be much more inclined to read an author who has done their research on said thing.

I admire how some people can think up of some of the best plotlines and character development just for the love of fanfiction, and I am guilty of submitting my own work as assignments in creative writing classes. There are so many talented people who say they may do it for fun, but so many have potential to go farther.

As for my own work, a lot of people seem to read my works and like it, but I will forever be my own worst critic. I try to be one of those writers who attempts to write any kind of story, but will never know if it's good unless I see the response from others.

I adore elegantly written stories with plenty of description and well thought-out phrases. That being said, I do not enjoy overly detailed stories. As @HKG2310 said, if it's dragged out it's not so great to read. If the plot, the story-flow, the characters are in-character, and the sentence-flow is good, then I consider it good writing.

I value simplicity, my favorite author in writing style is JK Rowling, and I often try to emulate her. She writes with so much detail, but presented in such a simple way that the Harry Potter universe just you right in. She also makes an amazing job of explaining this super complex world so easily. I also admire the way she gives hints of what it's going to happen later! My favorite of in hints is *spoiler alert, if you haven't read the books and want to, stop now* when Harry learns Tom's name and thinks the name sounded familiar, like he was an old friend. It's just one sentence, but after reading the entire series and reading book 2 again, it sends chills down my spine xD

I'm aware that people enjoy my writing, though I'm not exactly why. I write how I would like to read something. Personally, I really hate writing with too much detail - if the author takes up an entire paragraph for something that could be said in a sentence or two, I'm out, it's a waste of my time reading. That can often be a shame, because I have seen some authors who have great English writing ability, but even though their grammar and ideas are good, their execution is boring and instead of hanging on to their every word, I'm scrolling and skipping because I want to know when the chapter will end and the gist of what happened. Some people enjoy that kind of writing though and that's cool.

Unlike other readers, I consider myself as picky. A story that is well thought out and planned on ideas. A story where the writer doesn't just spits out words, but writes them effortlessly. Doesn't try too hard, but not too easily read either. A story that balances description and dialogue. There must be a very good flow from each word to sentence. Sentence to paragraph. Paragraph to chapter. Not too detailed, but not too scattered. Believe it or not, I found some of the better writing in fics than novels. I'm sure this is not what you're looking for, but I'm still putting my penny in :) Good luck.

Ops, I sent before finishing xD

What I admire other people for... Mmh... Well, if their story engrosses me and leaves me out of breath I admire them. Writing is incredibly difficult.

And no, my writing needs lots of improvements! English is not my mother tongue too so I lack on the grammatical aspect too.

I didn't know what to assume from your title question (are you talking about writing style, writing skills, techniques, etc.), but I'm just gonna elaborate some of the things that make me an avid reader of someone's works.
Writing style is different between writers, but for me, what tends to hook me in as a reader is someone who writes with less bs (you know when something doesn't really happen but they just want to impost that it does, and not even in the most persuasive way), uses less exaggerated descriptions (ie, instead of saying "like the sun descending from a Saharan horizon", just say "a desert sunset", like that), and basically doesn't try so hard. I mean, someone who knows their limits and knows when exactly to stop. And also, someone who's well aware of their strengths that they make great use of it.
Skills in characterizations, world building and plot development are easier to pick out and identify because they are the obvious story details. I like characters who are human; characters who don't have superman urges ("I can do anything" even though the situation suggests otherwise), and also not too weak that they end up being dead weight on someone's shoulders; characters who can think for themselves, who doesn't act all mighty and know-it-all; characters who are witty, etc.
Techniques varies in pov used, etc. I'm mostly fine with anything as long as it's used well.

I don't necessarily look for anything specific in what I read--when I read something, it's probably because (1) it is well-written, (2) the plot is well-thought through, not necessarily unique and original but somehow made new, (3) or I like the author and I have already established a special place in my heart just for them, so whatever they write, there's a ninety-nine percent chance that I would want to read it. I say I don't necessarily look for anything because whenever I find good reads, sometimes I just stumble upon them, or see them somewhere convenient for me to see, and thus I happen to just, you know, discover this piece of treasure by chance. It's always like that for me. I'm a picky reader so there's always a tendency that I don't go with what's trendy just because it's what most people read, I go with interesting plot deliveries and storytelling.

There's only a few people I admire when it comes to writing, namely: Neil Gaiman--and I admire him for his mind, because literally it works spectacles; it's a world wonder that everyone should appreciate. His words are magic itself, the worlds they make up and the stories he creates beat like second and third heartbeats in my chest, and it's as if they can plant themselves in someone's mind to create a civilization, so that the story may live on.

Chuck Palahniuk--his writing style is enviable OTL He tends to write mostly in first person based on some of his works I've read, but you know, his characters are dynamic and terrifying; I mean, his works are terrifying, too. In a way that makes you want to chase after your own death if you could. I have not yet read many of his works but if I can, I will read more.

Haruki Murakami--I think what I like about him is his poetic attack on stories. His technique as a Japanese writer makes him more...serene, more nature-like, you know what I mean? Even though it's not always greens and flowers, there's still something like a spiritual pull in his words that makes it create a huge impact on the soul.

I think I have fair writing skills, but compared to most stories here, it's very different and I guess that's what makes it less popular because it caters less readers.

Disclaimer: Know that I am not speaking through a professional's pov, just a reader/amateur writer. The terms may be wrong, but I hope I got the right point across. Sorry if this is a bit messy OTL

Talking about content, what I read has to move me but at the same time has to make sense. I hate when I read something and there are obvious plot holes or incongruous parts. I understand if they have a purpose in the story, but if they are caused by careless writing I can spot them right away and it spoils the story to me.

i usually look for good storyline and interesting ideas. i also sometimes look at the author's choice of words if i'm in the mood for something in particular. i do admire people from their writing styles, i think it's something that differentiates an author from the other.

and no, i don't really think my writing is good. i'm still learning myself c:
