Chapter 8
The Fate of The FourThe beat down was stopped just when Sergeant Kim had returned back to the tent, in which it was about 30 minutes after the beating had begun. Sergeant Kim was immediately stunned at her second-in-command’s actions and pulled her away from jabbing the almost unconscious soldier even more. Sergeant Kim, then, ordered her second-in-command’s two most obedient ‘goonies’ to release Private Kang from their hold, instantly causing the private’s body to plop to the ground lifelessly.
The seemingly muffled sound of Sergeant Kim asking, “Are you alright?” was the last thing that Private Kang could heard before passing out.
“What the hell did you just do?!” Sergeant Kim lashed out at her second-in-command after Private Kang had fully passed out.
“Just giving her the beating she deserved for putting our lives at hell when this scumbag’s in command of the army,” Sergeant Hwang replied and ridiculed the seemingly lifeless private by spitting on her face.
Sergeant Kim, who couldn’t contain her anger anymore, punched Sergeant Hwang fair and square on the face before kicking the three soldiers that caused wreckage out of the company's tent.
Sergeant Kim, then, added, “You three come back here when you guys are already contemplating about your actions and are in remorse!”
When the sergeant went back inside the tent, she could only saw tears streaming down the two soldiers’ faces, prompting her to engulf the two in a motherly hug and comforting them so that they could calm down.
“Can one of you please explain to me what happened?” Sergeant Kim asked softly at the two soldiers who were still crying.
Corporal Jung, who seemed to be more calmed down than PFC Kim, began telling, “I tried to stop them, Sowon unnie. I really do, but then Sin Bi was too strong for the both of us to handle. She asked Yerin unnie and Yuju to hold the general, I mean Private Kang, and began beating the hell out of her, but even in that condition, Private Kang doesn’t even budge to get out of the situation. Why does it feel like she’s letting herself be beaten down? I’ve seen her fight and I know she’s way stronger than the three of them combined, so why does she let herself be humiliated like that?”
Sergeant Kim comprehended that there was some truth to the corporal’s last statements, prompting her to whisper near Private Kang’s ears, saying, “Why are you trying to punish yourself, general?” not realizing that tears had begun to roll down her cheeks as well, just like the two younger soldiers.
“Eunha-ya, can you both help me carry Private Kang to her designated bed? And dear Umji, can you please get some fresh water from the well just a few meters from our tent? As well as fresh cloths to wipe the blood on her face?” Sergeant Kim ordered the two younger soldiers softly, who in return nodded before carrying their owned assigned tasks.
While Corporal Jung and Sergeant Kim carried the private’s body together, PFC Kim ran towards the supplies tent, where she could grab a few unused linens and apparently, two full buckets of freshly collected water from the said well. With extreme carefulness, the PFC managed to carry all of the items needed in no time and helped the other two soldiers attend to the former supreme general.
“Help me remove the dried blood from her face, Eunha-ya. And Umji, can you please help me get the private changed up to new clothes?” Sergeant Kim continued commanding softly while she was still patting Private Kang’s face with wet linens, hoping to remove the blood stains from her face and her neck.
PFC Kim grabbed the private’s bag and grabbed the first top and pants that she found and hurriedly went back to the private’s side.
“Eunha, Umji, help me hold Private Kang’s body up so that I can take her top off and changed it with a new one,” PFC Kim Umji requested, followed by the action of the other two soldiers to help the youngest soldier.
When the PFC took off the unconscious soldier’s top, the three soldier could evidently see red and blue bruising marks all over the mid-section of the toned body. Not only that, they could also spot some blood stains all over the place, causing an aghast expression to be horrifyingly painted on all three soldiers.
“Gosh, she doesn’t deserve this, Sowon unnie. She doesn’t deserve this kind of beat down. She’s one hell of an amazing leader and none of the words that Sin Bi said was true,” PFC Kim uttered sadly, again with tears beginning to trickle down her face for the umpteenth time that night.
“I know, my dear Umji, but there’s nothing else we can do now besides hoping that Private Kang can soon regain her consciousness back again and be healthy,” Sergeant Kim uttered sadly, intending it to be the comforting reply for the two younger soldiers.
For the rest of the night, the three just worked in silence as they continued to help the unconscious soldier recover from the damage done by the other three soldiers of the G Company. Right after getting the said soldier changed into new batch of clothing and all the blood stains had been removed completely, the other three soldiers decided to call it a night and just wrapped the unconscious soldier’s body with a thick linen, before going to their designated beds and drift off for a good night sleep.
The night went by quickly for the four soldiers inside the G Company as it didn’t felt long until the sun was just about to rise again from its sleep, marking it the time where the soldiers inside the tent should have woken up. With a simple tap from Sergeant Kim, Corporal Jung Eunha and PFC Kim Umji quickly rose up from their slumber and prepared themselves for the day’s resume of trip. On the other hand, when the three soldiers began to wake the beat soldier, the latter didn't seem to budge from her position, causing panic to immediately be instilled on the three soldiers’ minds.
“General, please wake up. I know you’re stronger than this, general. Please, don’t leave us like this,” PFC Kim pleaded right next to the still unconscious soldier’s bed, with tears unknowingly began to flow again.
Few minutes had passed and the former supreme general had still not moved from the static position, causing the G Company’s sergeant to be fully determined to report this matter to General Son Seungwan or Lieutenant General Park Jihyo or Lieutenant General Park Sooyoung. Amazingly, when the sergeant just got up from her position, Private Kang, although in a very weakened and semi-conscious state, stirred up from her unconscious state and slightly squirmed, alarming the three soldiers of her condition.
Sergeant Kim hastily ran back to the private’s side and asked, “Are you alright, private?”
“Yes, ma’am, although my head’s still banging and my whole body’s still feeling numb,” Private Kang reported feebly, before turning her head to look upon two sad-looking soldiers with dried tears staining their faces.
Private Kang moved her left arm and encased the two younger soldiers’ hands with her own before saying, “You guys don’t need to cry over me. This old and fragile soldier will die soon anyways, so don’t you guys cry over me anymore. Besides, I’ve been through worse than this before and I’ve bounced back every time anyone tried to incapacitate me. Don’t you guys also feel sorry for me and feel guilty for yourselves for not being able to
