20 questions... Well maybe more than that.
Stupid You,
We were both silent for a dreadfully long time, I look at my phone to check the time; it’s only been five minutes… and it’s getting to be a little uncomfortable... Again.
"Ahem... So... You're not from around here, are you?" He tries to ask casually after clearing his throat. Hah, guessed he probably feels awkward too.
"No, I'm not. How can you tell? Is my accent weird?" I ask. Man, I knew I should’ve practiced speaking at home more often.
"No, your accent sounds normal. But your style is slightly different, and YOU just look different" He replies, fighting back a smile. Wow, I am sort of offended by that.
"Oh gee. Thanks" I answer sarcastically, unamused.
He chuckles, "It's not necessarily a bad thing, why would you want to look like everyone else anyways?" What he says is true I guess. But way to make me feel like a foreigner. Okay, technically I am one, but I’m still Korean!
"Meh," I shrug. No point in trying to explain to him.
"Meh? What does that mean?" He asks, puzzled. Oh, I guess people here don't use that. Haha.
"I don't know how to explain it, it's sorta like saying ... 'whatever' or that something's 'okay', if you get what I mean." I try to explain.
He nods, "Weird slang you have wherever you're from"
"Canada,"
"... Damn. There must have been an accident or something. There's so much traffic." He says. Maybe he wasn't listening to what I said earlier, meh. Oh well, doesn't matter anyways.
"It’s probably gonna be another half hour to get there." He says, "In case you wanted to know"
"Oh. Kay."
"... Do you have any questions for me? Might as well kill time. I'll ask you one after and we can both answer; then we can switch and you ask the question again." He suggests with a friendly tone. Hmmm... Might as well right? Couldn't hurt, he probably wouldn't remember what I say anyways. And to be honest, we might not even talk after this.
"Or... Not," He adds, sounding cautious. I guess I must've been deep in thought for a while.
"No, we can do that. Uh... Let's start with the basics, how old are you?" I know, lame question, but hey, it's a start.
He snorts and smiles as he asks, "Do you think I look a lot older than you?”
“ …” I sit in silence. That’s not how you play this game… you can’t answer my question with a question…
“ Haha, I'm 20, turning 21 this year. And yourself?"
"18, turning 19 this year." Wow, three years difference. Doesn't look like it at all. We could pass off for the same age, I think.
"Hey, you didn't answer whether or not I looked a lot older than you," He smiles. Wow, maybe he is a smiley person, and not an expressionless robot.
"No, I thought we were the same age, actually" I say lightly
"That's good I guess. We both have late birthdays then. Okay, my question, when's your birthday?"
"November 25th, when's yours?"
"October 15th, now your turn"
I actually like the fact that I'm talking. Ever since I got here, I haven't really spoken to anyone besides Yejin, it feels nice to hear a new voice. Oh yeah, question. Think.
"Are you still going to school?” ... Another dumb question, I’m lame. I know.
"... Nope. I took a break from school almost two years ago, and haven't gone back. I'm guessing you're here because of school?" He half asks, slightly sounding cheerful towards the end.
"Yeah, good guess" And for some reason, I can't help but smile as I look through the windshield. "Your turn,"
