Dear Irene, mum's most precious thing.

Good morning. Happy Birthday darling!

I'm so sorry for not being with you on your birthday. I wanted to blow the candles out with you today. I promise I really wanted to stay.

Remember the trip I was talking about. Well... I think I'm going to be away for a while.
