Global Icon Thoughts

So a few weeks ago Global Icon debuted and kpop fans all across the world freaked out. People complained about autotune, people complained about how the video looked, how the girls looked, said they were coping B.A.P (um, what?), said they were copying Amber (again, what?), blahblah just a bunch of ridiculousness that I can't seem to understand.

When I first watched their mv for "Beat", I admit I wasn't that impressed. I didn't hate it, it just wasn't my thing. But then I watched some kpop reaction vids for it and almost every reaction praised GI or at least said they had potential. The song grew on me and now I do really like it, especially the chorus R&B singing breakdowns.

I know people have the right to their own opinion but I can't help but be seriously annoyed by all those who seemed to have made a definite opinion on this group because of one 3 minute video. They literally decided this group was bad just over one song.

Not only that, but there seems to be this idea that concepts must be solid. You must be a girly group or you must be a tomboy group, apparently there is no inbetween which I find dull and boring. "These girls aren't true tomboys! They're wearing heels!" So? And? Why must concepts be so coloring-inside-the-lines, so to speak.

This is what makes GI stand out. They seem like kickass girls that could beat boys up while simultaneously attracting the same boys they're beating up. They've got a hot, rough, vibe yet a an untapped appeal. It's an effortless cool I wish I had.

It's very refreshing getting away from the constant winking, aegyo movements, that seem to overwhelm every other girl group's mvs.

I guess I'm still not used to kpop culture so I'm very wary of all the judgement people seem to have.

Another thing I didn't get, was this sudden rejection of autotune like autotune has never been used in a song before (you know some groups have voice enhancements in studios, don't even try to act like other people's vocals are raw and untouched), and the video's overall display, of course it isn't the best, biggest, brightest video- they're a rookie group from Simtong Entertainment. What, were you expecting an S.M production? They probably don't have that much money and they probably can't afford to use it all on a rookie group in the first place.

also - the auto tune thing...if a group has to use autotune while they perform live, THEN there may be a problem. GI is singing/rapping live off the floor with a backbeat/CD/karaoke (meaning, singing on top of their own studio recording). they CAN sing/rap/project their voices and there is no auto tune on those parts.

MissTER did the same thing in taiwan. not many people complained about the autotune because they made the songs sound good live as well. and it was only the 2 lead-off singles. debut song is really important for any group. People should just wait to see what GI's next song will be like before judging so harshly.
