Foreword

A midsummer’s afternoon. Grey clouds circling the skies over town, showering rain over our heads. On a day like this, I’d be wrapped in a trench coat, umbrella in hand, running for cover hoping my leather boots wouldn’t be ruined. On a day like this, Alejandro would be at the apartment to welcome me hope, hug me despite my floppy wet hair, and fix me a warm cup of tea. On days like this, things were supposed to be fine.

But this day was different. Something was wrong, and I had to find them, and fast. Sweat lingered to my forehead, as I worked my way, barefoot, on the docks heading towards The Hurricane, my late father’s junk boat. I hurriedly untied the tight ropes that bound the boat to the docks. Only one thought was racing through my head, which powered my adrenaline, which controlled my every move; I have to find them.

Then, I heard my name. It was as if the wind was singing it, softly yet sternly. A jolt of fear sprang through my veins as I heard it again. Yet it wasn’t from the wind.

A tall, dark figure approached me, quickly sprinting. Wide eyed, I struggled to untie the ropes, grasping, tugging, even getting to the desperate point of gnawing.

“Stop,” The man pulled at my shoulders, my arms, my waist. He was trying to pull me away from the boat. “Please, stop!”

Holding onto the ropes, my hands started to sting like fire, as I finally gave way and let go, flying and collapsing onto him.

“I have to go!” I yelled frantically. “Their lives depend on me!”

“The police will find them, goddamn it!” He yelled in frustration. “Let me take you home.”

I furrowed my brows, and shook my head. “NO. I am the only one who knows where they are; If the police find them, that goddamn monster will kill them,” I screeched. “He’ll kill them!”

Tears poured from my eyes. My sight went blurry, my already lost mind spinning out of control.

I knew I had to get to them; but how?
