GIRL
My phone beeped yet again just as I pushed the huge door separating the gym hall and the indoor pool open.
I had hurriedly changed into a new pair of jeans after seeing Lu Han's note on my door. I thought about his last text, saying he was going to XXX's juice bar and then figured he must have changed his mind. So I hurried, the weight of solving the prank mystery heavier than thinking of going back and figuring Kris' unusual behavior.
"Wow," I couldn't help muttering in awe as my eyes swept the pool area in one glance. Since the wall parallel to where I was standing was made of glass, the light from the nearly setting sun reflected on the wide crystal clear pool below, creating a dreamlike paradise haze.
I opened the message as I got closer to the pool to get a better look.
From: Lu Deer Han
Get out of there!
Huh?
To: Lu Deer Han
Okay, now you're confusing me. Where are you?
Looking down, I was tempted to disturb the calm waters. I glanced at my phone and when there was no reply, I crouched down and reached out my free hand to the edge of the pool. The water was a little chilly, but the desire to create water ripples won over so I made little splashes here and there.
The moment suddenly made me remember Eunae, making me miss her more. We used to play around their pool when we were young when she wasn't that sick yet. How I wished we could do it again. Not here though, I thought as I noted the '16 feet' sign just inches away from where I was.
I sighed just as my phone beeped again. Standing up, I swiped to the message when suddenly, out of nowhere, something like a slap hit my back, making me drop my phone to the floor and sending me plummeting to the pool.
Pain spread through my face as I hit the water, face first. As the pool engulfed me, all I could think about was that the water was a lot colder than I thought, and 16 feet was a lot deeper than I had imagined with the rate that I was sinking.
Darn it, I cursed inside my head as I realized what was happening.
KRIS
Lu Han and I were like the staff that parted the waters of the red sea. We were running like crazy that the people in our path didn't have any other choice than to scamper away.
From the corner of my eyes, I could sense Lu Han glancing at me as we ran. He was probably wondering why I got involved when it was obvious that I normally ignore this kind of situation, situations that didn't involve me. I couldn't understand it myself, but the thought that she was somehow in any form of danger... I didn't even have to think about it.
On the other hand, I was curious myself as to why Lu Han was acting to this extent. He never said anything about her during the times that we had hung out. But I guessed their relationship must be pretty close if he, no, they -he and Jieun- frequented her room.
Lu Han suddenly cursed, interrupting my thoughts.
"What?" I asked as we rounded the last corner before we could reach the SMA gate.
"She's not replying."
After what seemed like a very long time, the quietness of the campus finally greeted us. We had to stop to catch up on our breath. I took the chance to ask where we were heading.
"She's at the gym pool," he said.
I stared at him, his words sinking in. If a person was capable of stranding a person alone in an elevator in the middle of the night, I didn't want to imagine what that person could do in a gym pool.
"Alright, let's go."
"Thanks for coming with me, Kris," he said.
I wanted to tell him that he didn't need to thank me, that I would have done the same thing even if he wasn't here. But instead, I just nodded and off we go again.
Just as we entered the gym, Lu Han suddenly stopped in his tracks, his gaze fixed on the other side. Following it, a familiar-looking girl was coming out of the door separating the gym and the pool.
"Why?" Lu Han breathed out the words defeatedly beside me.
Right at that moment, the girl looked our way, locking eyes with Lu Han. Guilt. Even from a distance, it was the only thing I could see written all over her face.
Lu Han slowly started walking forward, his breathing still heavy from running. I followed him silently.
"Lu Han," the girl said when we were near enough, her voice shaking. "What are you doing here?"
"Why Rin?" More than anger, disappointment laced Lu Han's tone. I knew then why the girl was familiar. She was Jung Hyorin, Black's secretary.
"I- I didn't do anything bad, I swear," she said, defensive.
"You don't consider stranding her inside the elevator in the middle of the night
