Fallen Angel

Fallen Angel

Jung Su sat in his office. He touched the ring on his neck and then looked at the invitation card on his desk. Hyo Lyn gave this to him the other day when they met. He didn’t know if he should go to the wedding or not. But it is the only chance to meet So Ra. Only one hour left before the wedding starts. At last, he made his decision. He took his car key and headed to the wedding venue.

The wedding is held in a hotel’s main hall. The roof is filled with white balloons. So Ra gave a box to Hyo Lyn when they are in the bride’s room. Hyo Lyn opened it and realised it is a dress. The dress is in white colour and is V neck maxi dress.

“This is my present for you,” So Ra told her.

“Komawo,” Hyo Lyn hugged So Ra. “I love this present.”

“I’m glad that you love it,” So Ra smiled.

So Ra entered the hall before the wedding started. She sat down at the table with Hyo Lyn’s other friends. She didn’t see Jung Su who was sitting at the table at the other end from hers. Jung Su saw her when she first walked into the hall. Even when the hall is crowded, he could still spot his angel. She wore a black knee-length dress with long sleeves and a pair of black heels. He saw her smiling when talking to Hyo Lyn’s friends.

The wedding lasted for three hours. When So Ra saw Hyo Lyn and the bridegroom read the vow, she thought of Jung Su. She looked at the necklace she is wearing. The pendant is the engagement ring. She never throws it away. She didn’t know why she kept it after what had happened between them. No one saw that bitter smile on her face as their attentions are on the couple. But Jung Su saw it. He frowned when he saw that smile. He didn’t know what crossed her mind that brought up that smile. He wanted to cheer her up even if she hates him.

After the wedding ended, So Ra left the hall. She didn’t know where she is heading to. She just walked along the street. Jung Su followed behind her. When she was crossing the street, Jung Su saw a car driving at the fastest speed towards her. He reacted as fast as possible. The next thing So Ra realised was that she was pushed while someone else was being hit by the car. When she turned around, that familiar figure was lying in a pool of blood.

“Oppa!” So Ra ran to Jung Su’s side. “No, don’t sleep… Wake up… Someone call the ambulance now!”

“Park Jung Su! I don’t allow you to leave me alone!” So Ra cried out loud. “Where is the ambulance?”

So Ra had no idea when and how she got to the hospital. The only thing she knew is that her hands were covered with Jung Su’s blood. When Hee Chul and Young Woon arrived, they saw her sitting outside the surgery room, still wearing the same dress from Hyo Lyn’s wedding. They exchanged glances and Hee Chul sat down beside So Ra while Young Woon stood aside.

“He will be fine,” Hee Chul said.

So Ra didn’t respond to Hee Chul’s words. She just stared at her hands. Hours passed and when the doctor came out from the surgery room, three of them surrounded the doctor.

“The patient will be sent to Intensive Care Unit for now,” The doctor took off his mask and said.

“When will he gain his conscious?” So Ra asked.

“It depends,” The doctor answered.

“Thank you doctor,” Young Woon said to the doctor.

Hee Chul asked Young Woon to buy some clothes so that So Ra could change her dress. Hee Chul passed the clothes to So Ra and asked her to get change. After So Ra changed her dress into a plain light blue shirt with a pair of jeans and washed her hands, she stood outside the ward, watching Jung Su who is lying on the bed.

“Not going in?” Hee Chul asked.

“Are you a friend of his?” So Ra questioned Hee Chul.

“Yes,” Hee Chul replied.

“Then you should know what happened between us,” So Ra spoke calmly.

Hee Chul looked at So Ra and then at Jung Su. After a long while of silence, he spoke, “I do. But I don’t think you know what happened to him after you left.”

So Ra didn’t say anything, she is waiting for Hee Chul to continue. Hee Chul looked at Jung Su and started to tell So Ra a story she never knows.

“He resigned once he returned to the States. He wanted to be the real Park Jung Su and stay by your side for the rest of his life. But when he came back, you are already gone. He looked for you day and night. Young Woon and I used every method we could to track you down because we couldn’t stand it. But we could only track you down to Hong Kong. Since then, he travelled back and forth between Hong Kong and Seoul. He thought that someday maybe he could see you on the street. But he never did.

He owns a café now in Cheondamdong called ‘Angel’. Do you know the meaning behind that name? It is for you. To Jung Su, you are his angel. You lost your father five years ago while he lost his angel. So Ra, you mean a lot to him. He used the engagement ring as a pendant of his necklace and would often look at it. That time we know that he is thinking about you.

For five years, he never stops looking for you. When he finally met you, you pushed him away. You didn’t give him a second chance because you don’t believe that he loves you. If he doesn’t love you, can you tell me who is the man lying in there? If he doesn’t love you, he would not risk his own life for yours. Kang So Ra, don’t do things that you will regret in the future.”

So Ra still remained silent. Hee Chul sighed and walked away. He could feel that So Ra still loves Jung Su but she just couldn’t forget what happened five years ago. This is the best he could do for them. As for the rest, it depends on So Ra. He just hoped that she would not make a decision she would regret years later.

Jung Su was sent to the normal ward two days after the surgery. So Ra would stand outside the ward and watch over him but never walk into the ward. Hee Chul and Young Woon would come to the hospital whenever they have time to do so. They didn’t force So Ra to go inside the ward to talk to Jung Su.

On the fifth day, Jung Su finally gained his conscious. He looked around the ward. He saw the doctor, nurses, Hee Chul and Young Woon. That one person he wanted to see is not inside the ward. Hee Chul and Young Woon saw the disappointment on Jung Su’s face but didn’t say a word. They didn’t know what they could tell him.

“Hyung, how are you feeling?” Young Woon asked Jung Su who is staring outside the window of his ward.

“Better,” Jung Su smiled at Young Woon. “Young Woon, can you do me a favour?”

“What is it?” Young Woon asked.

“Sell off my apartment and café,” Jung Su told him. His tone is calm, without much emotion.

“Hyung, what are you planning to do?” Young Woon asked him.

“Nothing,” Jung Su shook his head. “I just think that maybe it’s time to go back to the States.”

“How about Kang So Ra then?” Young Woon questioned him.

Jung Su didn’t answer Young Woon’s question but smiled while looking outside the window.
