Just Different

Foreword

“The usual.” I heard a familiar voice say, his voice was so distinct and it kept ringing in my ear. “She’ll know.” He added.

The newbie waiter went in the kitchen with a wide-eyed look, “The usual?”

I just nodded. He isn’t a picky eater, I even remember him saying my food was delicious when it tasted so bland. He kept on saying it tasted good when everyone said it tasted like dish water. He’s the one who kept on cheering me on, the main reason I was here.

I prepared the food. Sautéed. Broiled. I looked out through the small window, placing the plate of food and ringing the bell for the waiter to take it. No one was taking it, the three waiters we had were all attending their tables. I got the plate of food, and walked towards their table. Each step felt like it was taking me back to my past. My heart felt like it’s going to jump out of my ribcage. I was about to place the plate on their table, when he reached out his hand and took it from my grasp brushing his fingers against mine. I was trying my best to keep it together. “Enjoy the food.” was all I could say and quickly walked back.

“That’s really good, try it.” He urged his managers.

“It’s okay. You know there’s a Japanese restaurant near your dorm that sells this.” One of the managers said.

“This place is special.” He said with his deep voice that I love.

The same deep voice that said “Let’s break up.”
