— She was born in LA, USA. Her parents are both korean. They met when they were college students in the U.S. and got married in the USA. Her parents are rather well off, her father being a lawyer and her mother a surgeon, but they raised her to be humble. She has two elder brothers, (25 and 23) and two younger, adopted siblings, one brother and one sister, who are twins (10). She plays several different instruments, from piano to violin to flute. Her mother forced her to learn to dance. As a result, she can dance pretty well but doesn't really enjoy it as much as singing. She learned to cook from her father, who loves to cook. Her other family members, on the other hand, could burn water. She was teased a lot by her brothers. She was isolated when she was younger because her supposed best friend's crush confessed to her and it made that best friend mad. She was ignored all through elementary school and middle school by that friend and her clique. She ignored them back until they started bullying one of her close friends, at which point she fought back. She dumped a bowl of spaghetti into the hair of her former best friend and told her off. She always loved to sing and play instruments. Her family always supported her interests. When she was 13, she decided that she wanted to be a singer. At first she intended to audition at American talent agencies, but her friend, a major kpop fan, begged her to audition for SM. She auditioned and was accepted. Her parents, however, were displeased by her choice, believing that she should instead follow in their footsteps. She convinced them to let her go to Korea and become an idol, with the promise that if she couldn't debut by the time she was 20, she'd come back to the US and choose a different, more "sensible" career. She became a trainee at the age of 14 and trained for three years before debuting at 17. When she was 13, her parents adopted her younger siblings from India. At first, Nari felt very weird about them, thinking that they were her replacement almost, until her parents set her straight and since then, she talks to them often on the phone or over Skype. When she got to Korea, she felt very awkward because although her korean was near flawless, she wasn't quite used to the culture. Later, with the help of her members, she became more comfortable. She debuted as the Main Vocalist and Face of Etoile. She became friends with a lot of her sunbaenims and also friends with idols from other companies. She usually manages to somehow befriend one or two people from each group she costars with.

Once, right before his debut, he had been cornered by a few girls who were trying to get him to take pictures with him, something he obviously couldn't do as he was about to debut. Nari had also been in the convenience store and saw that Kai was cornered. She quickly came up next to him and proceeded to pull the girls off her "boyfriend". She then pulled Kai out of the store and away from the girls. He was thankful to her and offered to thank her buy treating her to something, as she was unable to do her shopping because she had to save him. She declined, however, saying "maybe next time" as she had dinner waiting at home. Next time came later when SM was about to announce which of the trainees had made it into the next girl group to debut. Nari was wracked with nerves and worried that she wouldn't make it. She had been practicing her dance after hours in the studio each night for hours. She felt like she was useless adn that she would never be able to debut and would have to go home. One night, she broke down and started crying, not knowing that Kai had been walking by at the time. Kai saw that she was upset but didn't know what to do. He came inside the room and just sat next to her while she cried, offering silent support. After she stopped crying, she felt very embarrassed and apologized to Kai. He dismissed her apology and told her not to worry about it. Unfortunately for Nari, her stomach growled then. He laughed and asked when she had last eaten. She sheepishly told him that she had not eaten since lunch. He then dragged her out and treated her to dinner. The next night, when she went to practice, he was waiting for her with some sandwiches. He forced her to eat first and then sat around talking to her about trivial things until she was ready to dance. Then he helped her grasp the dance properly. Since those two nights, the two of them had been friends, and somewhere along the line, she realized that she was in love with him, although he was oblivious.
