The Truth about being an SM Trainee

Description

Ever felt like your body was put through a shredder and then just shoved back together again? I wake up to it every morning. Ever had your voice strained to its absolute limit so that it feels like a piece of sandpaper: dry, scratchy, painful? Every other day. I sometimes wonder how I got through it myself.. but the answer is always Kai. It always has been Kim Jongin. (In this story, SNSD debuts after EXO, and Yuri will be replaced by my character. Don't like, don't read.)

Kai POV

Kai smiled and waved at the next person in line for his sign. She was cute, grinning wildly and greeting him with such excitement that a warm feeling bubbled in his stomach. He was beyond grateful that his fans supported them to such an extent.

"Hi oppa!"

"Hey there, what's your name?" he asked, glancing briefly at the person behind her. She was standing a ways off from the fan signing table, looking in the opposite direction and on her phone. Usually parents would stand like that but she was definitely not a parent, and the excited girl in front of him didn't seem like she needed parental accompaniment.. Why would you come and wait in line if you don't even want a sign? he wondered briefly, and realised that he had zoned out. He wrote down the girl's name and signed it while half listening to her chatter.

"..Ya Heri why are you standing so far - are you on your phone?!" the girl then proceeded to drag the other girl towards the table. Kai greeted her as she tucked her phone away into her jeans. She then greeted him respectfully and bowed at Kai which baffled him. Usually people just referred to him comfortably, as they wanted... He was the one who had to be polite.

"Oppa, my friend Heri here is a trainee at your company!"

At this Kai perked. Finally something interesting. That might have explained the manners.

"Oh really? You're a trainee for SM?" he asked, intrigued. He saw Chen beside him glance at her briefly in surprise, disbelief flickering in his eyes. They had experienced quite a few (ahemfakeahem) stories from fans about how they knew someone working for SM, someone who was an idol and whatnot, enough so that they didn't tend to believe things straightaway.

She did look like an idol though, in some aspects. Even though it was clear that she wasn't wearing any makeup, she had clear features and very clear pale skin. She was dressed very simply in a black shirt and dark jeans, which highlighted her long thin legs. She also had a black baseball cap on that was most probably to shield her face as she went into and out of the SM building.

"No.." she started, looking slightly embarrassed and Kai couldn't help but find it cute.

"Are you auditioning?" Kai asked again.

"She's passed the audition, she's a trainee I'm telling you. She's just shy and stupidly modest." her friend said firmly with an eyeroll.

"Work hard, fighting! I look forward to your debut." Kai nodded at her with a smile.

She returned his smile half-heartedly and tugged her friend away after bowing again in farewell.

"I don't really think she was a fan." Chen commented at their retreating backs.

"Mhm." Kai replied. "I think she was just shy."

"Yeah. Pretty cute though. " Chen whispered with a grin.

Kai rolled his eyes but couldn't help but agree silently.

-o- (Heri POV)
"Why did you say that??" I hissed as soon as they were out of ear shot.

"What? Why? They're your sunbaes right? So what's wrong with them knowing? They'll find out eventually." Junghwa said with a shrug.

"EXO are having trainees perform with them on their comeback tour as backups and extras in their photoshoots." I told her calmly. "If I get picked it's going to seem like I was kissing up to them for it."

She simply brushed it off, rolling her eyes and telling me to loosen up before starting to squeal about how lovely Kai had been.

She didn't understand.

That being a trainee does not make you much closer to debuting.

There's a ridiculously slim chance that you get to sign a training contract with SM, the top entertainment company in all of South Korea.

And even then, a next to no chance that you get to sign a performing contract with them.

It was a business of constant backstabbing, favouritism and a world where everything was fair.

No. Junghwa couldn't understand.

What it really meant to be an SM trainee.
