Chapter 19

I Used To Not Like the Water

Taemin, Jonghyun, Kibum, Joon, and Jinki were all sitting in the living room, while Minho talked with his mother out on the balcony. The youngest mermaid was very nervous about his lover. He wondered what Minho’s mother was saying. He remembered the first time she came over and things didn’t go so well for the human. He could also feel in his gut how nervous and upset Minho was; and it worried him. Taemin tried his best not to use the bond to spy in on their conversation but he really wanted to. He tried to keep himself occupied with eating chips and watching television. He would also ask Kibum a bunch of questions about human life just to keep himself busy. It wasn’t exactly working but he did his best.

Minho stood on the balcony, his mother quietly standing next to him. They hadn’t really said anything to each other for a minute or two. They just gave each other a few short awkward glances before turning back to stare at the floor, wall, or out at the view. Minho had many questions and so much to say. He sighed and gestured for his mother to sit in one of the chairs that were set up. She quietly nodded and sat. He followed and sat across from her.

“H-how is school” she asked, breaking the silence between them.

Minho nodded and sat back in his chair. “It’s alright…”

School was not going so well. He didn’t want to lie but he didn’t feel like dealing with that right now. In truth, he and Kibum haven’t been to school in a while because of the two mermaids. For all they all know, the school could be burned down. They didn’t really care though. The two mermaids were more important.

His mother nodded. “Are you eating well? You seem a little thinner than when I last saw you.”

“Yeah” he answered. “I’ve just been a little busy lately.”

“Good” she replied softly.

Silence fell between them again. Minho sighed softly. How he had so much to say but didn’t know where to start. He was a little sad thinking about his mother and angry at his father. His mother on the other hand was quiet and stoic. He couldn’t tell what she was thinking but at the same time, was afraid to ask.

Minho looked at her. “Why did you come here?”

“Why didn’t you come home for the family dinner” she asked, ignoring his question.

“You know why…” he replied softly.

Her expression softened. “Your father still loves you.”

“Then why isn’t he here telling me that?”

“Because he’s stubborn and so are you. Why don’t you just talk to him?”

“He said he didn’t want to see me again. I’m doing him a favor…”

“D-don’t…” he said softly. “Please… don’t lie to me.”

“I’m not going to pretend that everything’s fine… And I’m not going to pretend that I’m okay with all this. I’m still trying to wrap my head around the fact that you’re now… g-gay…”

“It didn’t just happen… I was always like this. You and dad just didn’t pay attention or cared.”

“We do care about you.”

“Dad disowned me!”

“Well I haven’t” she stated. “You’re my son. I still love you and I still want you to succeed in life. I still want you to be happy.”

Minho didn’t say anything, looking at her a little surprised.

She continued. “Even if you’re gay and your father doesn’t agree with it… I want to meet your boyfriend.”

He looked at her. “But dad–”

“He’ll be out of town” she said cutting him off. “He’s supposed to go on a business trip tomorrow morning. So tomorrow night, when he’s gone, I want you, me, and your boyfriend to have dinner together. I want to at least know who my son is dating.”

“I though you gave up on me…” Minho said barely louder than a whisper.

She leaned over, cupping his face with her hands. “I would never give up on you. Even when you’re a complete idiot sometimes, I’ll still love you.”

He smiled a little. “Thank you.”

She smiled and stood up, pulling him into a hug.

“But wait…” he said pulling away. “Do you accept me?”

She paused. “I’m not going to lie. At first, I was in complete shock but the more I thought about it… I don’t agree or disagree. I just want you to be happy and healthy and if being with a guy makes you do that then that’s alright with me. Just graduate and get a good job.”

He pulled her into tighter hug and whispered another soft “thank you.”

She chuckled and patted his back a little, hugging him back. Minho finally felt like a weight was lifted from his shoulders. He missed his mom. He missed talking to her and going home on some weekends to eat the food that she cooked. Even though it hadn’t been that long, the thought that she didn’t want him anymore was driving him mad. He pulled away and smiled. She wiped his cheek with her thumb. Minho didn’t even realized he’d been crying. He sniffed a little, rubbing his face with his sleeve.

She chuckled. “You’re still my baby boy.”

Minho laughed a little. “I’m grown up now.”

She smiled and looked inside the apartment. She looked past him and through the screen door at his boyfriend.

“What’s his name again” she asked.

Minho turned and looked. “Taemin.”

She nodded. “How old is he?”

“He’s twenty one” he said.

His mother gasped a little. “Isn’t he kind of young?”

Minho chuckled. “Only two years younger than me. That’s not bad.”

“I guess you’re right… well, I have to head back home. You’re father and I are buying new living room furniture. I was going to meet him at the store.”

“Okay. W-what are you going to tell dad?”

She shrugged. “Nothing for now. I want to meet Taemin first then talk to your father.”

Minho nodded silently and walked his mother to the front door.

“I’ll see you soon” she said, placing a kiss on his cheek. “We’ll talk more later.”

He smiled a little and nodded. He hugged her one last time before watching her leave down the hall. He waved a gentle goodbye and closed the door. He let out the breath he didn’t even realize he was holding. Biting his lip, he rested his head against the door. The meeting went better than he thought and he was happy to know that his mother still loved him. He felt better.

He pulled away from the door and combed his hands through his hair. When he turned around he saw Taemin, already standing behind him with a worried expression.

“What happened” the mermaid quickly asked.

Minho jumped a little and began to walk past him. “Don’t do that. You scared me.”

Taemin huffed. “What did she say?”

The human smiled a little. “She said that she still loves me.”

Taemin smiled. “That’s good right?”

He nodded. “Yeah. But she says she wants the three of us to have dinner. She wants to meet you.”

“Really? When?”

“Tomorrow night.”

“Yeah but it’ll be fine.”

“But what will your dad think?!”

“He doesn’t know. He’s going on a trip so it’ll be just you, me, and my mom.”

“Okay…” Taemin said softly.

Minho walked over and wrapped his arm around the mermaid. “What’s wrong with that?”

“Nothing. Just… what if she doesn’t like me?”

“Don’t worry. She’ll love you.”

“But it’s not like our first meeting went so well.”

“Trust me. You’re perfect. You have nothing to worry about.”

The mermaid smiled and wrapped his arms around his lover. Chuckling softly, Minho gave him a quick kiss before walking them back to the living room. When they walked into the room, they saw Jonghyun and Kibum cuddled up with each other and Joon and Jinki sitting at opposite ends of the couch. Nothing different than usual.

“Is everything okay” Kibum asked.

Minho nodded. “Yeah. I’m fine.”

Kibum nodded and went back to watching television.

“We’re going to lie down for a bit, take a rest” Minho said. “Why don’t you guys take them to the beach?”

Kibum and Joon looked at him curiously. Neither wanted to move from their comfortable state.

Jonghyun smiled and sat up. “Yeah. I want to go to the beach. I would really like to swim. I’m sure Jinki would too.”

Kibum stood up and sighed. “Alright, but you have to put clothes on if you want to leave the apartment.”

“Have fun” Minho said, pulling Taemin back to their bedroom and closing the door behind him.

Taemin sat on the bed as Minho closed the door.

He looked up at the human. “But I want to swim too. I’m not even tired…”

Minho walked over and pulled Taemin up for a sloppy, wet kiss. The mermaid leaned back and the two fell on the bed, still keeping their lips locked. Minho pulled away a little and moved down to his lover’s neck, peppering it with butterfly kisses.

Taemin laid his body back against the mattress. “M-Minho…”

“Who says we’re going to be resting” the human whispered.

The other four left the apartment soon after the two went into the room and took Joon’s car to the beach. They went to the quiet secluded area once again so they wouldn’t bring any unwanted attention to themselves. As soon as they got there, Jonghyun was in the water. Even Joon got in the water as well, which surprised Kibum a little. Meanwhile, Jinki was lazily taking off his clothes and Kibum was sitting in the sand like he normally did watching from afar.

Jinki looked at him. “Why don’t you get in?”

Kibum sighed. “I don’t like to. I also can’t swim…”

“Then why don’t you learn” the mermaid replied.

The human pouted. “I just can’t…”

Jinki nodded a little and went over to the water.

“Wait” Kibum yelled.

The mermaid turned to him curiously.

“How do I block out Jonghyun from my thoughts” he asked. “I mean, I don’t mind but what if I want to surprise or something.”

Jinki smiled a little. “Just play a song.”

“Play a song” he questioned.

The mermaid nodded. “It’ll be harder to do that at first but just think of a song and don’t stop singing it, in your head of course. It blocks out most stuff unless you’re really upset.”

The human nodded understanding and watched as the mermaid went into the water, quickly swimming away from shore. Kibum looked at Jonghyun who was swimming around in a circle. Kibum got up and went to the car, getting his bag that he brought. He took out the notebook inside and a pen and went back to sitting in the sand. He started at the blank page thinking about what to draw.

“Whatcha doing” he heard a voice say.

He looked up and saw Jonghyun sitting in front of him. He still had his tail so he dragged himself over to his lover.

Kibum sighed. “I was going to sketch some ideas for clothes but I don’t know what to do…”

“What about the sketches that I see in your room” Jonghyun asked curiously.

“They’re not that good” Kibum answered. “I need some new material. Something better.”

The mermaid nodded a little. “Oh…”

The human nodded. “I’m also going to start a fashion blog.”

“What’s a blog?”

“It’s where you post stuff online about a certain thing. I’m going to do a fashion blog. Even though there are a lot of people doing it, I have to start doing something. Get myself really immersed in it.”

“Okay. I’ll help anyway I can.”

Kibum smiled. “I just need you to model the clothes.”

“I thought I was too short…” his lover said.

He kissed Jonghyun on the cheek. “You are but only for runway. You’ll be fine for pictures. Just keep being y.”

“y…” Jonghyun repeated with a smile. “What’s runway?”

“It’s where people walk and model the clothes.”

“But I thought you were supposed to model in pictures.”

“You do pictures and runway too. And commercials.”

Jonghyun sighed heavily. “The human world is so complicated…”

Kibum laughed at the frustrated mermaid.

“Why can’t things be simpler…” the mermaid continued.

Kibum paused. He just had an idea. He began to sketch in the notebook, ignoring Jonghyun’s whining.

The human smiled to himself. “The first thing I’m going to do is something simple but fashionable.”

While Kibum and Jonghyun were sitting on the beach, Joon and Jinki were swimming in the ocean. Jinki was mainly swimming back and forth pretty far out on the open water, diving under the surface every once and a while. Joon quietly watched the mermaid. He was absolutely fascinated by the way Jinki glided through the water. He thought the creature looked beautiful. As he watched Jinki, he found himself swimming over to the mermaid being completely entranced.

Jinki began diving into the water when Joon decided to follow him. Joon swam down, watching the mermaid swim around some coral reefs. The human’s eyes burned from the salt water but he didn’t care. He wanted to study the mermaid longer. He never really looked at Jinki in this state but now that he was, he couldn’t look away. He studied each scale on the mermaid’s body and how his muscles moved so gently but with power. Jinki was the most muscular out of the three mermaids and was also the fastest and strongest. Joon noted this and loved how Jinki moved about the water so easily. To him it was stunning.

Joon’s lungs couldn’t take it anymore. He took his eyes away from the mermaid and he went back up for air. Taking a deep breath, he let his longs filled back up with oxygen. Moments later, Jinki emerged from the water as well but didn’t seem to notice the human. He began diving back down again when Joon reached over to feel the mermaid’s tail. Jinki immediately came back up and pulled his tail away, staring daggers at the human. Joon gulped softly.

“Don’t touch me” Jinki demanded.

Joon pulled his hand away. “S-sorry…”

The mermaid looked at him. “Why… why did you touch me anyway…?”

“Your tail…” Joon said softly.

“What about my tail?”

“It’s really… blue.”

“Yeah. And shines when the sun hits it. It’s hypnotizing.”

“And then when you swim… i-it’s beautiful…”

Jinki didn’t say anything. He felt his face heat up, turning a soft shade of pink. He stared into the water to keep from looking at the human. Joon just looked at him. He stayed quiet and swam off, trying to quickly get away. Joon watched the mermaid swim away and down into the water, wishing the mermaid would stay. Joon sighed and went back to shore.

He walked onto the sand to see Jonghyun and Kibum talking amongst themselves. Jonghyun had his legs back by this point and was sitting close to his lover, looking at Kibum’s sketch. Joon sat down next to the couple and let out a heavy sigh.

“Why are you sulking so much” Kibum asked his friend.

Joon sighed and laid back in the sand. “Trying to get Jinki to like me.”

Jonghyun chuckled and looked at the elder. “You’re going to have to do a lot to get him to like you.”

“Why do you need him to like you so bad anyway” Kibum asked.

Joon shrugged. “I don’t know… I just feel like I do. And anyway, I want him to forgive me for what I’ve done to him. I feel guilty… all the time…”

“You’ll have to give it time” said the mermaid.

“How long” Joon asked.

Jonghyun shrugged. “Several years.”

The elder huffed and sat up, looking at the water. He couldn’t see Jinki but he felt as if the mermaid was watching him. Meanwhile, the couple went back to talking with each other.

“I wonder why Taemin didn’t want to come with us” Jonghyun said, thinking out loud. “I figured he would want to swim as well.”

Kibum chuckled. “You’re really curious? He and Minho are in an apartment alone. And they said they were going to rest. I could see exactly why Taemin would stay at home.”

The mermaid laughed and rested in the sand. “I guess you’re right.”

The human nodded and went back to drawing in his notebook, trying to get his ideas out on paper before they left his mind.

“Well, well, well, look who we have here” said a familiar voice from behind.

The three turned to see Seoyoung standing there with her arms crossed. She walked through the shrubs and rock, blocking the access to the beach and stopped next to the three men.

Kibum stood up. “What’re you doing here?”

She looked at him and rolled her eyes. “Relax. I was just jogging and happened to see people over here. I was curious.”

“Okay. Now you see us” Kibum said. “Leave.”

“I thought you knew your manners” she said. “Anyway, where’s Minho?”

Joon stood up as well. “Not here.”

“I guess I came at a bad time” she said softly.

Seoyoung looked past the two down at Jonghyun who was still sitting in the sand.

She smiled. “You’re cute. What’s your name?”

The mermaid stood up and to everyone’s embarrassment, he was stark . Kibum took his notebook covering his lover’s crotch with it.

Not caring, the mermaid smiled. “I’m Jonghyun.”

Still blushing, she replied “I’m Seoyoung.”

“Kibum’s told me all about you” said the mermaid.

She giggled. “I hope it was something good.”

Jonghyun hummed. “I don’t know… He said you’re something called a… .”

Her smiled dropped and he glared and Kibum, the human not caring in the least.

“I shouldn’t get so closed to these guys” she said pointing to the two humans. “You should hang out with someone like me.”

Jonghyun shrugged. “I like them. I mean, Kibum is my boyfriend so I’d rather hang out with him than anyone else.”

She paused and looked at Kibum. “You’re gay. Not surprising…”

Kibum rolled his eyes. “You can go now.”

Seoyoung huffed and started walking away back to the bushes and rocks.

She turned back around and said “oh by the way, since you haven’t been to school in a while, our professor has paired us up together for a project.”

Kibum frowned and sighed. “What’s the project?”

“We have to create a simulated company” she replied. “Anyway, I better see you at school Monday to work on the project. Don’t screw up my grade because you’re screwing him.”

With that Seoyoung was off and disappearing behind the over growth. Kibum sigh and sand back down in the sand.

He groaned. “I can’t believe I have to work with ing Seoyoung.”

Joon sat back down. “It could be worse.”

“And you” Kibum yelled, looking up at the mermaid. “Will you ing stop walking around with no clothes on?! I told you humans don’t like that. It’s embarrassing!”

Jonghyun mumbled a soft sorry and walked back into the water, swimming off.

“Be easier on Jonghyun” Joon said, sitting back. “He doesn’t know better.”

Kibum sighed and looked at the elder. “I’m just frustrated…”

“Relax” Joon said. “Just finish the project as quickly as possible and then you never have to talk to her again.”

“I guess you’re right…”

“Don’t let your dislike of her blind you. You want to finish your masters don’t you? You’re almost done. Don’t let her distract you.”

Kibum nodded softly. “I know. I know.”

The younger sighed and looked back at his notebook. He didn’t feel like sketching anymore. He looked out at the water and saw Jonghyun staring at him. He did feel a little bad about yelling at the mermaid. It was frustrating but he knows Jonghyun still doesn’t quite get the concept of or why it’s so embarrassing.

“Come over here” he yelled.

Jonghyun shook his head. “No. You yelled at me.”

Kibum held out his arms. “I’m sorry.”

The mermaid pouted.

Kibum stood up and walked to the edge. “I’ll order you a pizza.”

Within a few seconds, Jonghyun was out of the water and sitting in the sand. Kibum laughed a little and sat down next to his lover. Jonghyun playfully poked his shoulder.

The human leaned over and kissed him on the cheek. “I’m sorry. But you seriously need to stop walking around with no clothes on.”

The mermaid sighed. “I hate the feeling. It’s so uncomfortable. Can I not wear clothes at home?”

Kibum nodded a little. “At home is fine. Once you leave though, you have to have clothes on. Next time I’ll bring a towel so I can cover your waist.”

Jonghyun nodded. “Alright.”

Kibum smiled and stretched his body, lying back in the sand.

The mermaid looked at him. “I thought you were going to buy me a pizza.”

“In a minute” the human said, waving off his lover.

Joon stood up and brushed off the sand from his body. “When your legs come back and you put on some pants, let’s play a game.”

“I’m too tired…” Kibum whined.

Joon rolled his eyes and looked at Jonghyun. “Want to play?”

The mermaid nodded a smiled. “I didn’t even know you could play games at the beach.”

The elder laughed and nodded. “Yeah. Of course. How about volleyball?”

“I don’t know what that is but okay” shrugged the mermaid.

Joon smiled and went to his car to get the ball. Jonghyun sat in the sand waiting for his tail to dry and turn back to legs. Meanwhile, Kibum was still resting in the sand on his phone. He was finally ordering the mermaid’s pizza online. When Joon came back, he had a beach ball in his hand and a small portable net. He set it up a few feet away from the couple. The mermaid watched finding everything very interesting.

When he was finished setting up, Joon tossed the ball at the mermaid who didn’t know what to do and just let it bop him on the head. Jonghyun blinked and looked at Joon confused, picking up the ball.

Kibum looked at him and smirked. “Watch out babe.”

Hey Everybody!

Chapter 19!!! Yay!!!

Sorry, I took so long to update. Can't believe it's been a month. I've been busy and I'm rarely home long enough to write. Usually when I get home I'm too tired to do anything and just eat and sleep. But I will update as much as I can. I am not abandoning the story.

Anyway, Minho talked to his mom and things are better; but how will the dinner go for 2min? And JongKey is doing good, as per usual. Seoyoung is back and might make the couple's life quite interesting. And I'm working on Jinki and Joon right now. Baby steps, but they are getting there.

And at the end, I had Key (Kibum) say "watch out babe." As you can probably tell I've been on Tumblr and JongKey had some awesome fanservice so I had to to put that in there.

THANK YOU for the comments and subscriptions they are amazing! THANK YOU for waiting. And please look forward to the next chapters.

Happy Reading!
