Prologue: Face From The Past

AON World On Fire [ HIATUS]

As I sat in my office my head started pounding with that now familiar pain that signafied that it was time to wrap things up. For months now I've been getting these intensely painful headaches. When I went to the doctors he told me it was stress. That I needed a vacation. Know what I did? I laughed in his face and told him that if I took a vacation South Korea would go up in flames. My job was too important for me to take breaks.

I shuffled some papers of the current case I was investigating and sighed. I couldn't concentrate. I rubbed my temples and sat back in my chair closing my eyes. A moment later I heard my door open.

"Hey me and Tao are heading out. Its Naeun's birthday. We're taking her out." Minzy said beaming brightly at me.

I smiled. "Ok. See you guys tomorrow. And tell Naeun happy birthday." I told her before she left.

I loved seeing Minzy so happy. After everything that went down with that case three years ago everyone was in a bad place. But Minzy and Dara were hurt the most. Dara had to deal with the death of Chanyeol. She was practically a zombie after, even took a leave of absence from work for a few months.

She was back now. And she was happier but sometimes she would stare off into space and looking so haunted. Minzy had Tao so she was able to cope a little better. But I know Chanyeol's death weighed on her. And I know she felt like it was her fault for being involved with Oh Sehun who no one knew was a deadly assassin. I know that she felt that he wasn't all bad and even though Minzy tried to hide it she grieved over his death also. Yeah that whole case left a bad stain on everyone involved. I was glad when it was finally wrapped up.

I sighed again knowing I wasn't going to be able to get any work done. It was getting late anyways. Mostly everyone had already left for home. I decided to give it a rest for tonight. I gathered the papers into my bag and stood. I took the elevator down to the undeground parking garage and exited. My heels clicked on the concrete floor and echoed in the otherwise silence of the space. I made it to my car. As I started to unlock the driver side door I felt a prickling on my neck.

I knew what that feeling meant.

Someone was watching me, and they were close.

I pretended ignorance continuing to unlock the door. I reached in placing my bag casually on the passanger side seat while I discreatly pulled my gun for my waistband. I took a deep breath before I straightned up out of the car and turned with my gun raise pointing straightforward. A shadow began to emerge from the darkness before me. I squinted trying to get a better look.

"Stay back. I have a gun and I will shoot you."

The figure continued to advance on me without pausing.

"I'm serious. I will shoot you." I called out.

And again he continued to walk without pause.

Reckless.

I prepared to fire when he stepped into the light and I gasped.

"You."

"Me." He said smiling.

He smirked at me with that same arrogant look that I rembered. I assumed he was dead. But then how was he standing here before me?

"Are you going to lower the gun?" He drawled.

"Uh no. I think not."

He chuckled. "You won't shoot me."

"Try me." I said smiling sweetly.

Another man stepped forward and I imeadiatly recognized him also. It was Im Minho the secreatry of defense.

"Sir." I said in shock.

"Put the gun down Mrs Lee." he said.

I looked at Kris and then back at Mr. Im.

"Ok. What the hell is going on?" I asked as I reluctantly lowered the gun.

"We can't talk about it here. Follow me to my car."

I looked at him sceptically and then back at Kris who was still smirking at me in a way that seriously had me considering shooting him no matter what Secretary Im said. "Why would I go anywhere that he's going? He's a criminal. Shouldn't we be arresting him and questioning him? We still don't have all the answers for that case.. He could have them." I said eyeing Kris.

Secretary Im sighed heavily. "We need him. And we also need you. Its important and I need to debreif you on the situation tonight..Now." He emphasized.

I nodded stifly and followed him to his car. He had a driver and the three of us got into the back.

"Where are we going?" I asked uneasily.

I had reservatons with trusting higher ranking officials especially after congressman Park had betrayed my team.

"No where in paticular. We are going to drive around. I can't take the risk that anyone will hear." He said.

I sat up straight.

Ok this was serious.

Conspiracy serious.

I glanced quickly at Kris who was silent to be surprised he was watching me. I felt breathless when he looked at me that way.

I looked away.

"The only people who know what I am about to tell you is me, and Kris. Not even the president. Its top secret."

Our current president was lower in rank than the vice president but he had to step up since Sehun killed the former president and vice president.

"You can't tell anyone what I am about to tell you. Not even the other three members of your team." He said solemly.

I nodded signaling that I understood the importance of keeping this a secret. I didn't like it because I trusted everyone on my team. They were loyal. Especially my girls. I trusted them with my life.

"We suspect that the death of president Kim was for the purpose of implanting a spy into our government. Unfortunately we believe its alreay happened. We just can't prove it." Mr Im said.

"What do you mean?" I asked confused. I wasn't following and I didn't like looking stupid. I was usually quick to figure things out but it seemed everything to do with that case was complicated.

Maybe to complicated for me.

Mr Im nodded at Kris.

"Our team was instructed to kill the vice president and make it look like a north korean agent had comitted the murder. Next was supposed to be the president and another north korean would be set up for that. We were supposed to leave just enough clues so that you're team would be led in the direction of blaming North Korea." He said. He sighed and ran his fingers through his hair. "But Tao was done. He didn't want any part of any of it anymore. So he purposely put himself in Minzy's path when you were chasing that guy at the warehouse. He dropped that paper on purpose to point you guys in the right direction."

I remember that. We were chasing a dangerous arms dealer. Minzy had charged ahead alone. As she had bumped into a guy wearing a hat, she couldn't see his face. She didn't think anything of it. Until later the paper was found. It had everything about the VP on it signifying that someone was watching him possibly to assinate him. That was the start of the case.

"We knew that there was someone in you're government that was one of us, that they would move into the presidents position. We just don't know who. Only Suho knows that."

"Who? Who wanted to do this, the chinese?" I asked.

I knew that Kris was chinese. So was Tao and the rest of the crew that was involved with the plot.

Kris nodded. "Suho's dad is the SOD in china. Since we were young we were trained by him and others to be spies, murderers. We've done so much in the name of or government. I don't know how far it goes up, if the chinese president is in on it or not."

I rubbed my head. Wow. This was much bigger than I thought. Much bigger. My headache was getting worse with this new information.

"So what do you need me for? And why do you need him?"

He had just admitted that he was a spy. That he comitted multiple murders for his government. Why wasn't he sitting in a interrogation room somewhere instead of in the back of a luxury car?

"We had a feeling Kris wasn't dead. We've been watching him and Tao. They recently contacted each other so we were able to track him down. We need him to go China and try to get information and we need you to go with him."

Kris laughed. "They don't trust me not to run, or to let the chinese government know they are on to them. So you're my babysitter."

I glared at him. This wasn't funny.

"We need you to help him figure out if the president is one of them, and if not who in our government is."

I didn't like this plan. I didn't want to do it. I didn't feel comftorable working with Kris.

"Why can't we use Tao?" I asked.

I was much more comftorable with him.

Kris shook his head. "They know he betrayed them. He'll be killed the moment he steps into the counrty."

"And what about you? You betrayed them. You killed your own." I said looking him in the eye.

You got shot protecting me. I wanted to say.

"Yeah but the only ones who knows that, witnessed that, are dead. The other two, you and me, we can keep a secret."

Really there was no way out of this if I wanted to protect my country and the people in it. I had to work with Kris. I had to work with someone I really didn't trust.

"Fine. I'm in."

I told Mr Im while still looking at Kris trying to figure him out.

He never broke eye contact.
