7. The Barrel Bolt Saga
The Blood Brother Code“Did you know Xiumin has a tattoo on his left cheek?”
“Jongin!”
Laughing silently, Jongin swayed idly from side to side in Kyungsoo’s chair, keeping an eye on the cameras from the apartment. Xiumin was experimenting with food in the kitchen, apparently very happy at the freedom to finally cook something he’d like rather than just having a tray of pre-made prison food shoved at him.
“Okay, okay. It’s actually between his shoulder blades – Kyungsoo made me monitor him while he was in the shower. And you want the ten-inch bolt with the chain. Deadbolts can be picked – I’ve opened them myself – and you’re stuck if you lose the keys. To get rid of an old-fashioned bolt you either need to saw through it or knock the door down, and both should give you ample time to wake up or call for help. The doors are quite thick – they ought to be able to take two-inch screws without a problem.”
There was silence from the other end of the phone. Then Semi spoke again.
“There are security cameras in the bathroom?”
“Not a blind spot in the apartment, honey. Sorry.”
“But what about when I’m changing?” Semi sounded panicked.
“Kyungsoo turns them off for you. It’s okay. And there’s not a chance I’d watch because that’s gross and icky.”
“Jongin, are you sure you’re not gay?” she asked.
“Well, last time I looked, I’m pretty sure it was Angelina Jolie who and not Brad Pitt, so yeah, I’m pretty sure.”
Semi grumbled something from the other end of the phone.
“Oh, and Semi, Semi, guess what?”
“What?”
“I have a secret admirer! I came back after the lunch break and somebody had left flowers on my desk!”
“Are you sure they weren’t for your co-worker?”
“No, the note reads ‘to Kim Jongin, welcome to work, xxx’,” he read off the small card.
“That’s not a secret admirer. That’s a welcome present.”
“From a secret admirer,” Jongin insisted. “Why else is it not signed and why does it have kisses on it?”
“Whatever floats your boat,” Semi grumbled. “Look, it’s beginning to rain and I want to get back before I get entirely soaked. Thanks for your help.”
“The girls here love me!” Jongin called before ringing off.
“Being fluent in English does have its perks,” acknowledged Kyungsoo’s voice from behind, startling him. “A lot of girls dig it. Did you work out who those are from yet?” He set down a mug of steaming coffee in front of Jongin and pointed to the flowers on Jongin’s desk.
“No. Thanks.” Jongin blew on the boiling liquid before taking a tentative sip. “I don’t think I know enough women here well enough to start guessing things like that. It’s only been a couple of days.”
“Well, just bear in mind it might be men as well as women,” Kyungsoo said as he reached over him to remove a memory stick from the computer. Jongin choked.
“Are you trying to drop hints that it’s you?”
Kyungsoo tossed the memory stick up and caught it again. “Angelina Jolie floats my boat more than Brad Pitt too.” He winked. Jongin flushed, wondering just how much of the conversation with Semi Kyungsoo had overheard.
The rest of the day passed in companionable silence. At eight in the evening, Jongdae showed up offering to take the night shift on the cameras.
“You want to watch that Xiumin carefully,” Kyungsoo said once he’d explained all the controls and which screens were which cameras. “He’s a sly b*gger. Semi went out and got a bolt for her bedroom door and I really don’t blame her.”
Jongdae looked alarmed.
“What, did he try something on her last night?”
“Not exactly,” said Kyungsoo. “I’ll leave you to watch that clip yourself. It’s on the first tab.” He pointed to the bottom of the first computer screen.
He and Jongin began packing up for the evening as Jongdae sat down in front of the cameras.
“Where’s sound again?” Jongdae asked a few moments later.
“Middle button on the hi-fi speakers. Or plug in the earphones.”
“Thanks.” As he busied himself with the earphones, Yixing popped his head around the door, blinking owlishly.
“Sehun rang. He was asking how Semi was doing.”
Jongin and Kyungsoo exchanged glances.
“She’s… doing,” Kyungsoo said after a moment’s hesitation. “But let me just say I’m very glad there are cameras in that apartment.”
“Oh.” Yixing straightened up. “Why, has Xiumin tried something?”
“Not exactly,” said Jongin, but Jongdae chipped in before he could elaborate.
“Whoa. This is not okay. This is very not okay.” Pulling the earphones out, Jongdae turned around and got up from the chair, pointing at the computer screen. “That’s practically harassment, and the manner in which he did that is downright disturbing.”
“What did he do?” Yixing asked at the same time as Kyungsoo heaved a sigh and also spoke up.
“If you think that’s disturbing, you should see the footage from this morning. He bought her a new watch because hers was broken and made her breakfast acting like they were
