“Hey look,” Jaehwan teased, “there’s your crush, Hakyeon.”
“Shut up,” the older hissed, stretching across the table to hit his friend, “I do not like him.”
“Don’t lie,” Taekwoon commented, glancing up from his food, “you like him. We all know it.”
“I do not!” Hakyeon hissed, glancing in the direction of his crush to make sure that he was too far away to hear anything.
“There’s nothing to be ashamed of,” Jaehwan sighed, dropping his teasing tone for an encouraging on, “Sanghyuk is a nice guy. Smart and handsome too. He’s perfect crush material.”
“He’s not perfect,” Hakyeon sighed, “he’s already got someone.”
On cue, Sanghyuk’s boyfriend rushed over to the young man. Hakyeon watched with a heavy heart as Wonsik grabbed Sanghyuk’s hand, interlacing their fingers, and leading Sanghyuk over to a table where their friend Hongbin was sitting.
“Someone who cheats on him constantly,” Jaehwan muttered, recalling the rumours and pictures floating around school of Wonsik making out with other people.
“Sanghyuk deserves better,” Hakyeon nodded, “but if he wants Wonsik……..” Hakyeon sighed, “I just wish he’d find someone better, someone who didn’t cheat on him.”
“We’re in high school,” Taekwoon said, “very few high school romances last. I’m sure once he graduates, he will find someone who deserves him.”
Across the cafeteria, Sanghyuk scolded Wonsik for the newest round of cheating rumours.
“Why are you so pissed?” Wonsik rolled his eyes, “it’s not like we’re actually dating.”
“Would you keep it down,” Sanghyuk hissed and Hongbin rushed to cover Wonsik’s mouth, “you know you can’t say something like that so loud around here.” Sanghyuk quickly looked around, making sure that none of his fans had heard Wonsik’s careless words. The last thing he needed was a repeat of the days when people knew he was single.
“Right, sorry,” Wonsik bowed his head slightly, “but my point still stands. And you didn’t have to pick me, Hongbin here is a perfect pick.”
“Ew,” the pair recoiled, clearly horrified by the suggestion.
“No way,” Sanghyuk scoffed.
“We’re like brothers,” Hongbin nodded, “it would be .”
“Whatever,” Wonsik sighed, “why don’t you find someone else? Clearly I’m not good for the job.”
“He’s got a point,” Hongbin nodded.
“But where would we find someone?” Sanghyuk asked, “We can’t just walk up to a person and ask them to fake-date me to keep the fans away.”
“I actually might know someone we could ask,” Hongbin suddenly said, “there’s this guy in my class, Hakyeon. I think he might be interested if we asked.”
“I know that guy,” Wonsik said, “He’s a good guy.”
“Then we ask him,” Sanghyuk decided, “if he agrees, then we do a public dumping of Wonsik, wait a little bit, and start a new fake-relationship.”
And that was why Hakyeon found himself being dragged off by Hongbin once their final class ended.
“Hey,” Hakyeon cried, trying to pull away from the other, “what are you doing?”
“Dragging you,” Hongbin replied, rolling his eyes.
“To where?” Hakyeon tried again to figure out what was going on.
“You’ll see,” was all Hongbin said before dragging Hakyeon into the library, not stopping until they came to a forgotten corner of the library.
“You’re late,” Sanghyuk said, looking up from the book resting in his lap before turning his attention to Hakyeon, “you’re Hakyeon, right?”
“Y-Yeah,” Hakyeon nodded, trying not to focus on the fact that his crush was sitting right there before him looking amazingly good.
“Not going to beat around the bush here,” Wonsik spoke up, reminding Hakyeon to the fact that he was there as well, “would you be interested in dating Sanghyuk?”
“What?” Hakyeon said after a long pause, brain still trying to understand exactly what he’d just heard.
“Wonsik and me dating?” Sanghyuk said, “that’s not true. We only said that so all the people asking me out would stop. Not to brag or anything, but there were a lot of them.”
“So we came up with the fake-date plan,” Hongbin grinned, “and it worked like a charm.”
“Did until someone started getting ,” Sanghyuk scoffed.
“Can you blame me?” Wonsik scoffed as well, “not like you’re gonna let me get anywhere.”
“Even if I did,” Sanghyuk rolled his eyes, “it would be weird.”
“True,” Wonsik nodded after a moment.
“Anyway,” Hongbin said, “Wonsik needs out, Sanghyuk isn’t gonna force him to stay in a fake relationship, so we need someone to fill the role of ‘Sanghyuk’s boyfriend’. At least until school is over.”
“Hongbin suggested you,” Sanghyuk told Hakyeon, “and Wonsik says you’re a good guy, too. So? Will you be my fake boyfriend?”
“I……” Hakyeon said as he tried to figure out what to do, unsure if he should agree or not. If he did, he could easily shatter his heart when everything ended. But then……maybe he could get closer to Sanghyuk. Close enough for the other to like him enough to date him for real.
“You don’t have to agree,” Sanghyuk assured him, “if you want to pass, you can walk away and never talk to us again. Just…don’t tell anyone about all of this.”
“I’ll do it,” Hakyeon said, trying to smile.
“Happy to hear it,” Sanghyuk smiled brightly before turning to Wonsik, “looks like we’re breaking up.”
“Looks like it,” Wonsik laughed.
None of the four knew where this was going to end.
None of them knew that Sanghyuk would eventually end up asking Hakyeon out on a real date.
None knew that on graduation day Sanghyuk would announce to the whole school that he was in love with Hakyeon.
They defiantly didn’t know that several years down the line, Sanghyuk and Hakyeon would still be together, still be very much in love, and have a couple of children.
But that was the joy of it; they didn’t know. They would just have to go on that journey, unaware of the ending.
A/N: this turned out way longer than planned. I kind of wanted to make this longer, but *shrug* I have to have this ready for posting so…….it’s fine like this. In fact, I actually like it better this way. That’s got to be the best ending I’ve ever written!
