“Hello,” the alpha grinned, appearing suddenly out of thin air behind Sanghyuk, “You’re the alpha’s mate, correct.”

“Y-Yes,” Sanghyuk nodded, trying to keep the fear he felt for this man from clouding his judgement and controlling his actions.

“I must be honest,” the alpha remarked, “I never would have guessed that Taekwoon would take someone like yourself as his mate.”

“Because I can’t have children,” Sanghyuk said, quickly regretting the tone he allowed to slip into those words. He glanced at the other, worried that he’d angered the alpha.

“No,” the alpha laughed, “not because of that.”

“Then what?”

“You’re life is going to be cut short, little pup,” the alpha smirked, careful not to let anyone else hear what he was saying, “you were already living on borrowed time thanks to that mother of yours, but now that I’ve found you........”

“You plan to finish what you started,” Sanghyuk summarized.

The alpha nodded before walking away, telling Sanghyuk that they would meet again.

Sanghyuk felt oddly calm. Even though he knew that he should be scared out of his mind, he didn’t feel scared. He guessed that he always kind of knew that this would happen. That he would cross paths with the man who killed his pack and meet his own end. If he felt anything about the matter, it was sadness. Sadness that he would be leaving Taekwoon. That the other would blame himself.

Without saying anything, Sanghyuk made his way over to Taekwoon, hugging his mate tightly before pulling back.

“What was that for?” Taekwoon questioned, taking hold of Sanghyuk’s hand and entwining their fingers.

“Nothing much,” Sanghyuk said, a soft smile forming on his face, “I was just thinking how grateful I am to you. You’ve made this life so wonderful. I wouldn’t trade it for anything.”

“Is something wrong?” Taekwoon frowned, pulling Sanghyuk close and leading him away from the party so that they could talk alone, “Did someone say something to you?”

“No,” Sanghyuk lied, “not really. Just listening to how some of this alphas run their packs.......makes me happy I’m here, that you’re the wonderful alpha that you are.”

Taekwoon smiled softly, pressing a quick kiss to Sanghyuk’s lips. He trusted that Sanghyuk wouldn’t lie to him if something was seriously wrong.
