PSYCHE WARD

Prologue

          It was a quite gloomy afternoon. The sun was masked by a thick throng of gray clouds while polluted beads of rain water raced down my windows. I took one last brief glance at the bedroom I spent most of my childhood in before sauntering down the stairs to gather with the rest of my family.

          Mom, dad and Minji were lined up besides the front door with their hands tucked behind their back and their heads angled towards the wooded flooring.

          “Dara-yah.” My mother whispered with an evident strain in her voice.

          I bluntly looked up at her. “What.”

          “Today’s the day, huh?” Her voice struggled.

          “Yah, I guess so.” I pushed my hair back with impatience while staring blankly around the room-really anywhere besides my parents painful faces.

           “Unnie.” Minji squeaked from next to mom’s pale blue skirt.

            Her face was streaked with tears.

            “I’m going to miss you unnie.”

            “Alright then.” I responded dryly while trying to avoid her bloodshot eyes.

            When she started to whimper, I could help but wrap my arms around her in a tight reassuring hug.

            “Minji-ah, I’ll miss you too.” I patted her head and kept her close. My little sister was the only person I truly cared about.

            “Will you be back soon?” She sniffled.

            “I hope so...but only time will really tell. “ I kissed the top of her hair. “I’ll try to be back as soon as possible-I love you, okay?” She nodded while allowing me to release her.

            “Shall we go now?” My father uncomfortably interrupted in a low evasive tone.

            I flashed a quick little heart sign to my heartbroken sister before nodding at my father and following him out the door.
