"Hey kiddo, time to wake up."

Jimin ruffled his younger brother's flop of brown hair and patted his cheek gently. The latter groaned in complaint and tried to swat his hand away; quite ungracefully as it didn't even touch his older brother’s hand with how he was practically still half asleep.

Jimin chuckled at Jacob's—or Jay as what he’s called—attempt before shaking him a little more forcefully, causing the younger to whine in protest.

"Okay… hyung! I'm awake. Stop—“

"Are you sure? Do I need to flip you off this bed?"

Jay glared at his brother. "You're mean."

Jimin smirked. "You know I'm not."

"You're right. Tae Tae hyung said you're evil."

"And you believe him?"

"He says Santa really exists and that it was scientifically proven that he lives in the North Pole. Yup, Tae Tae hyung is smart!" The kid smiled lazily as he tried to keep his eyes open.

Jimin sighed amusedly before pulling the curtains aside to let in some light. It was the blue hour, just at the brink of sunrise and Jimin couldn’t really blame his brother for having a hard time waking up.

"Yeah… I think we need to stop hanging out with Taehyung too often."

"That's what he told me about you!" Jay said which made Jimin chuckle, knowing Taehyung would actually really say that to try and steal his little brother away.

"Oh yeah? But you have to admit… Hyung is cooler than Tae Tae hyung right?" Jimin said as he helped the eight-year old out of his bed and pulled him onto his feet.

There was a moment of silence.

"Are you actually thinking about this?" Jimin asked incredulously which made Jay laugh. "Why you little—“

The little boy squealed as Jimin initiated a tickle fight, attacking his sides which Jimin knew was his most vulnerable spot. Right there, Jimin forgot his problems momentarily; with the whole skating and 'save my career' fiasco that's currently keeping him up at night.

With Jay, he could just be himself and not have to put up his "champion-athlete" front.

It was a few years ago when their parents passed of a terrible accident. Jimin, who was only sixteen then, was already a competitive skater in the juniors division while Jay was merely three-years-old.

Jay was so young when he was left under Jimin's care and the older was terrified to death when he thought he would be taken away from him considering they were still both minors. But Seokjin, their amazing and most beloved cousin, had come in and took them under his wing for a few years until Jimin was old enough to take care of Jacob on his own.

With Jimin's success in his skating career, he was able to do just that: provide a home for the both of them and even support his schooling. Jimin was basically a parent at what's supposed to be the prime of his youth. Though he never saw it as a downside.

In fact, he didn't mind it at all. He would rather take care of his brother than do all those things kids his age usually do: like partying or dating.

Jimin would do anything to keep his little brother with him. The only family they got was each other, after all.

He listened with a smile as Jay talked animatedly about his camping trip this weekend. They had gotten up extra early today since the bus would leave at 6 A.M. which should take them up north to a wilderness reserve. Jimin was against it at first, not wanting to have Jay so far from him but after much pleading from his little brother and assurances from his teachers that they would be completely safe, Jimin gave in and thought what kind of a brother would he be if he didn't let him go out and explore?

He just hoped there weren't any bears in that place.

"When you get there I want you to send me a text, okay?" Jimin said as they pulled over at the front of the school. "I know there might not be signal in the woods but before you actually go in, please let me know—"

“Yes, hyung." Jay huffed while rolling his eyes. Jimin had been talking nonstop during the drive even though he probably gave him the whole safety speech for the hundredth time that week. "I know I know, you even told Mr. Brown about it remember?"

Jimin sighed as he pulled out his camping bag from the trunk. He caught one of the parents looking at his car and smiled inwardly. His BMW has always been a sight for sore eyes.

"Just be careful okay?" Jimin said as he placed the hat over the little boy's head and helped him wear his backpack.

"It's two nights hyung." Jay rolled his eyes and Jimin wondered if Taehyung taught him to sass like that. "The worse that could happen is that I forget to brings insect repellant."

"You did?!"

"No. you packed it yourself remember? And a spare too on my other bag." Jay reminded him and Jimin sighed in relief. “I’ll be back before Monday!"

"I mean it, Jay. Behave." Jimin said before pulling him in for a bone-crushing hug. "Love you."

“I—I can't breathe—"

"That's not the reply I was looking for~" Jimin teased as he hugged him tighter.

"Okay I love you too hyung—can you please let go?"

Jimin chuckled and let go eventually, patting his back. "Have fun."

Jay tipped his hat before jogging towards the bus where the other kids were. Jimin watched him go and was surprised when just before he boarded the bus, his little brother looked back and waved goodbye with the brightest smile on his face and somehow that made Jimin feel a lot less worried knowing his brother was going to have a blast.

~~~
Jimin arrived at the rink just in time for his morning practice. He had sent Suho a quick text, saying he might be a bit late since he was driving Jay to school and his coach has replied to take his time.
Jimin thought that was uncharistically nice of him, considering Suho always liked to start on time
"Morning Jimin!" Hoseok greeted when he came in  Jimin nodded in return, looking a little breathless as he had rushed to the rink as soon as he dropped off Jay.
"Is coach—"
"Already with your new partner." Hoseok wiggled his eyebrows suggestively and Jimin groaned. He forgot they were auditioning another girl today.
"Well there goes my morning." He grumbled as he made his way into the locker room swiftly; his grumpiness making Hoseok laugh.
"Oh? Thought this would've actually made your morning." Hoseok called out and Jimin looked over his shoulder to shoot him a baffled look, unsure what he meant. But then he shook his head and continued walking, deciding not to mind as Hoseok talked nonsense half the time.
After changing and doing some off-ice warm ups in one of the training rooms, Jimin got into his skates and moved to the main rink to meet with his coach.
As expected there was a girl on the ice with him and they were talking. Jimin sighed and prepared himself for what he expected as another failed attempt into getting him the perfect dance partner.
"Hey coach. I—" Jimin paused as Suho and the girl turned to look at him.
He wsn't sure what he expected really... but it was definitely not that girl standing on the ice.
"Maddy?" Jimin asked, remembering the girl he had met on the rink a few day ago. The one (though he wouldn't admit it) who managed to make him feel better after having that nightmare.
"What are you doing here?"
Maddy seemed to be just as surprised as him and opened to answer but Suho was already speaking.
"Great you already know each other." He smiled, though Jimin could sense he already knew that fact beforehand. "Jimin, meet your new partner."
~~~

Maddy stared at the boy with wide eyes, mouth slightly agape as the words caught in .

When Suho came to her a couple of nights ago, asking her to audition for an ice dancing competition, Maddy remembered Gigi's earlier suggestion:

Having skated for a few years, Maddy could basically do a lot more than amateur skaters. She could do jumps, spins; and with her ballet background, she could manage form and execution of elements almost like a pro. Gigi had suggested to add an ice skating portfolio into her application for PDC, saying that it would definitely be different and might just give her application the push it needed to stand out.

When Suho showed up at her doorstep, it was almost like a wish come true because right there was an opportunity.

But Maddy wasn't exactly clear on what she signed up for. And now, here she was like a deer caught in the headlights as she's suddenly face to face with the international champion skater, looking at her with an equally surprised and baffled expression.

"Partner?" Jimin asked like he couldn't believe Suho had just said that.

“Yes, partner. She's here to audition." Suho smiled at Maddy softly. "Though I'm pretty sure we already found the one."

"The one?" Jimin echoed, looking at Suho with furrowed eyebrows. Suho placed his forefinger to his lips, silencing Jimin before he could protest more.

"Shh." He held out a hand to Maddy and she hesitantly placed her palm on his. "Just try and dance with each other please?"

Suho tugged at her hand slightly before grabbing Jimin's hand and making him take hers. Maddy saw Jimin clench his jaw while shooting his coach a slight glare though he still held her hand; gently but firmly as she observed.

They stood there holding hands not really doing anything and Maddy felt a little uncomfortable at the obvious tension in the room.

"Well?" Suho crossed his arms, motioning his head towards the middle of the rink. Jimin sighed heavily, not bothering to hide his frustration before finally glancing at Maddy and giving her hand a slight squeeze.

"Come on."

Jimin pulled her to the middle of the rink and once in position, he looked at her with the same kind eyes she remembered a few days ago.

It was oddly calming.

"Do you know any dance routines?" He asked. "For pairs, I mean?"

Maddy opened but nodded instead. She would be lying if she said she hasn't memorized several ice dance routines considering she loved watching them since she was a kid. And being a dancer herself, it wasn't that difficult to pick up the moves.

"Good." Jimin nodded. "There's no music so we'll go by counting...okay?” Maddy nodded and was surprised when he smirked.

"What?" She asked, feeling fidgety under his gaze.

"You don't talk much do you?" Jimin smiled as they began to skate together.

"Just...surprised." Maddy said as she let herself glide alongside him, his hand firm on her waist.

"Why? What did he tell you?"

"Definitely not that I would be auditioning to be your partner." She mumbled.

 "You don't want to?"

Maddy looked up and their eyes met, causing her breath to hitch ever so slightly. Jimin glanced down, taking her hand and moving her arm up in a flourish. Their bodies moved on their own accord, executing each step gracefully.

"No. I—I mean. It's just that you—“ Maddy huffed and Jimin had to bite his lip to keep from smiling too much. "I don't think I'm someone who can do this with you know? I mean you're a champion ice skater! I'm barely novice. Juvenile—"

"Hmm." Jimin nodded in agreement as he held her at arm's length for a spin. "Though I'm more interested in knowing how coach knew about you."

"What do you mean?"

"Suho may be crazy for suggesting I dance with someone who's not on my level. No offense," he quickly added but Maddy couldn't help but feel offended still. "But he's smart and he's a great skater. He knows what he's doing. So he must've saw something in you."

Suho watched them silently, nodding at how nice they looked side by side. Ice dancing relied heavily on chemistry and Suho could definitely saw a spark between the two. It was mainly the reason he chose Maddy. She might not be a pro skater but Suho thought with training, he could manage to make her one.

As the routine ended, the two moved towards Suho who was standing with his arms crossed; a knowing smile on his face. Jimin almost rolled his eyes at that because he knew that look...

He knew he was impressed.

"That was...great!" A resounding applause echoed across the rink. The three people on the ice looked over and saw Jongin clapping by the barrier, all smiles in his blue jersey jacket.

Suho smiled and raised his hand for a wave. "What do you think?" He called out.

"I literally just said they were great." Jongin rolled his eyes before sliding up the ice and moving toward them. "Do I need to shout it out again?"

Jimin remained silent as their two coaches talked and Maddy couldn't help but feel a little out of place.

"Hi. I'm Jongin. Jimin's choreographer." He held out his hand and Maddy took it with a smile. Maddy recalled seeing him a few times in the building.

"Maddy."

"So Maddy, are you in? We start training tonight."  Jongin winked but before Maddy could answer, a protest pierced through the conversation.

"What?! That's it? She's in just like that?!" Jimin exclaimed, making Jongin and Suho shoot him a blank look.

"Did you want to have her dance more?" Jongin asked, confused.

"What's the problem now, Jimin? I'm sure you think Maddy is a good skater too." He pointed out and Jimin could only press his lips together in a thin line, knowing Maddy was the least worse skater out of all the applicants. And that was saying something considering she was only juvenile.

"Am I the only one who thinks she's not exactly at par with the requirements of this competition?" Jimin asked, obviously looking for a problem in the situation.

"Actually she is." Suho said a matter of fact. "I've already done my research. The two of you are basically beginners on the ice dancing scene so it doesn't really matter what your level is."

"But—"

"So Maddy, what do you say?" Suho turned from Jimin, ignoring him completely to acknowledge Maddy who had somehow sunk into the background due to the bickering ice skaters.

"I..." Maddy gulped, glancing at Jimin who had his arms crossed and looking away like she had done something to upset him. She wasn't sure why he was suddenly so angry.

"I don't know." She said, finally. "I'm sorry but it seems that I'm not really wanted here..." she glanced at Jimin who had clenched his jaw. "I want to help. I really do. But only if he's okay with it." She chuckled half heartedly. "We can't exactly be partners if we hate each other right? So thanks, Suho. I really appreciate the offer. But I'm gonna go..."

Maddy turned and began to skate towards the exit, leaving the three men on the ice. Jimin peeked a glance at her retreating form, feeling an unfamiliar heaviness settling upon his chest.

"Ow!" Jimin suddenly yelped as he felt himself being knocked up on the head. When he turned, he saw Jongin giving him a disapproving look. "What was that for?" He hissed.

"What's wrong with you? Maddy was very nice to have agreed to work with you!"

“Wow. Are you saying I'm that hard to work with?” He retaliated. "She didn't even know she was going to be partnered with me!"

“Because she would've been intimidated by you that's why I didn't tell her." Suho intervened with a deep sigh. "But I did tell her it was for an ice dancing competition. She's a great dancer, Jimin. I went to that ballet academy downtown and her records are remarkable! I saw some of her videos too and she's absolutely great."

"Translation: go and apologize !" Jongin snapped. "Cause trust me, you won't be able to find someone like her again. Well, maybe you could but you don't exactly have the time. It's either her or goodbye Olympic gold."

"Jongin..." Suho warned, knowing Jimin could easily be riled up whenever the subject came up.

Jimin looked over to the side and saw Maddy already putting on her skate guards. He knew they were right. Maddy could be his only shot to saving his career.

Correction, she was his only shot as of the moment.

"That Saoirse girl is still waiting for an answer too if ever you let this one go." Suho taunted and all of a sudden Jimin was wide awake, seeing the opportunity before him.

With one last sigh, he called out, "Hey!"

Maddy looked up and saw Jimin skating towards her. She huffed and turned, placing her backpack on her right shoulder.

"Maddy...wait. I'm sorry." He said as he managed to catch up with her at the barrier while easily slipping on his skate guards. "I was being a jerk."

"I'm glad you know." She muttered just as she felt a hand closing around her wrist, stopping her in place. She looked down at her hand then up to meet Jimin's eyes. He looked sincerely apologetic and somehow that made her stop.

"I'm sorry." He said. "I...I'm just really stressed out about this whole partner thing. I need it to be perfect and I'm just a little shocked that coach—"

"Would pick someone like me?" Maddy finished for him and suddenly Jimin felt his throat run dry at the harshness of that statement. He sounded like a douche bag if ever he did say it. Though he probably already was considering it had crossed his mind.

"Look Jimin. It's fine. I get it. I don't even think I'm cut out for this myself. I don't want to trouble you so just find the right skater and do a good job, okay?" She smiled and Jimin was a little surprised at how easily he was forgiven. He didn't think he has ever met anyone so understanding.

"But…"

"Don't worry. I'll put this past us. And I wish you luck." She smiled before turning back around.

Jimin couldn't describe what he felt right then: when time seemed to slow down as Maddy walked farther away from him, her long hair swaying slightly as she moved. It was a moment of in between when he felt himself struggling between two choices: to find another skater or take a risk with the ballet dancer right in front of him.

Suddenly, Jimin remembered that very first day and how he felt comfortable around her despite having just met.

He knew that was already a big factor in choosing his partner. He needed someone he could work with...someone he could be a team with.

He needed Maddy.

"Wait." He called out and Maddy's steps wavered before she finally turned around.

"Yeah?"

Jimin could feel his body moving on it's own, his mind no longer protesting as he closed the distance between them until they were practically face to face.

"Skate with me." He finally said and Maddy's eyes widened slightly at his words.

“But you—"

"Skate with me." Jimin repeated as he reached out for her hand and gave it a gentle squeeze. "Please."

Maddy could feel her cheeks heating up at the intensity of his gaze, and the hairs on her arms have risen from the way his hand held hers.

"Jimin—"

“Maddy, please." He said as he looked at her intensely with a sincere expression. "I can't do this without you."

Maddy wasn't sure what it was. His honesty? His sincerity? But there was definitely something about the way he was looking at her that made her want to give in.

And she did. Before she could process what she was doing, Maddy was already nodding and accepting the offer.

~~~
"You're doing what now?!" Gigi exclaimed and Maddy ha
