A reply to the short scenario "I Missed You, Most Ardently" by victoiredelacoure

OC- Kaye

Seokjin returned to their dorm feeling exhausted as hell.

Their schedule was packed for the day, literally taking up all of his energy and there was nothing more that he wanted to do than to crawl into his bed and sleep the night away like a babe.

"Hyung!" Jungkook hollered from the living room as Jin was just about to enter the bedroom. "What?"

"What's for dinner?"

"We just ate!" He exclaimed then sighed. "But if you're really hungry there's leftovers in the fridge."

"Thanks!" Jungkook yelled back just as a loud crash, like pots and pans falling to the ground, sounded.

"Yah! What was that?!" He yelled worriedly with his hand on the knob, hoping it wasn't so serious that he has to--

"Just Taehyung hyung!"

Sh*t, Jin muttered before dragging himself towards the kitchen to fix whatever the alien has done.

~~~
It took an hour before he finally got himself onto bed and as Jin covered himself with the blanket, he suddenly found himself unable to relax. He tossed and turn, fluffed his pillows about three times, before finally laying on his back; his fingers entwined on top of his stomach. He had his lips puckered, making popping sounds just like a bored school boy would.
The blankets were warm against his skin, the smell of the fabric familiar and comforting, but...
He sighed as he reached to his left, his hand finding empty space. He looked to his right and frowned, realizing what the problem was.
Jin sighed once again as he covered his eyes with his arm, thinking how it was just not the same without Kaye by his side.
Kaye was his girlfriend of two years and they had met at the university where she majored in Literature and he in Acting. Their love story wasn't that of the romance epics nor was it anything close to the romantic escapades people often dreamt about...
Jin smiled at the thought that their meeting was more like a coincidental clash of two worlds: where does an actor and a writer go to find inspiration?
One word:
The library.
Flashback
Jin ruffled his hair as he made his way to the university's library. After checking-in his backpack at the baggage counter, he made his way to the arts sections where all the acting, playwrights, and screenplay books were. He immediately grabbed one and browsed through its pages. He needed to find a character whom he can do a monologue on for a class assignment. Usually, these sort of stuff came easily for him, but with the amount of work he does with his group Bangtan, the promotions--the practices... Jin found himself a little out of it to do anything school related and would rather just sleep on his free days.
He was browsing aimlessly through a book when he heard a small yelp followed by the sound of books crashing to the floor. He closed the leather bound and moved to the other side of the shelf where he found a girl huffing as she looked down at the floor where her books lay on the ground. As she crouched to retrieve them, Jin immediately went over and helped.
"It's okay, I got it." The girl said. He looked up just as she did and their eyes met.
Jin paused for a moment and noticed warm brown eyes on a cute face. He recognized her and knew they shared a class or two. "Here." He said, handing her a couple of paperbacks.
"Thank you, Jin-ssi." She bowed before standing.
"You know me?" He asked, feeling guilty that she knew his name and yet he didn't. But to his surprise, the girl smirked and let out a slight chuckle. "I think the better question is: who doesn't know you?"
Jin smiled at her witty remark as he stood. He deliberately took the other books from her hands upon seeing that she was having a hard time carrying them. "Where to?"
"Oh it's fine, I can carry it--"
"Where to?" he repeated, his grip tightening on the books as she held on to it. Kaye smiled with a sigh, knowing that there was no arguing with him. "Suit yourself." She shrugged as she walked ahead with him in suit.
Jin started a conversation about one of the classes they shared. Homework wasn't always the best conversation starter but he found it quite convenient to use at the moment. He walked beside her and asked if she had already started on the essay they were tasked to do. Kaye smiled cooly and said she was, causing Jin to give her an impressed look.
"You are?"
"You aren't?" She replied with a playful smirk and Jin rolled his eyes. "Show off."
Kaye chuckled and Jin couldn't help but stare. She had the cutest laugh he had ever seen. It wasn't the girly type of laugh nor was it a loud laugh that made you jump in surprise. Jin liked it and felt a wanting to do it again--to keep her laughing--to keep her smiling at him.
They arrived at the table at the far corner of the library, where it was mostly secluded and empty of people. Kaye glanced at him expectantly, and Jin just stood there staring at the table then at the books; thinking.
"Uh...." She asked, waving a hand over his face. "Jin, here's my stop. Thanks for the help."
"You're welcome." Jin smiled but didn't make a move to let go of the books.
"Can I have my books?"
Jin bit his lip, then pulled the books closer to his stomach with a playful gaze. "These aren't your books."
Kaye raised an eyebrow, "What are you--"
"This is school property." He said simply as he browsed through the materials. To his surprise, it was all books on acting and playwrights. He scrunched his nose at the realization. "You're not an acting major, right?"
"English Literature." She answered as she grabbed for the books. She inserted force and pulled but Jin was too strong and pulled too, causing her to take a  step closer to him. So close that her hands were now trapped between the books and his stomach. She looked up to protest but was shut up by Jin's challenging gaze staring down at her.
Kaye gulped at their close proximity and tried not to think of handsome he was up close or how warm her brown eyes were.
"I have a proposition." Jin said. "What do you say I check these books out and we go somewhere nicer like a cafe?"
Kaye wasn't stupid and glared at him as she figured out the true purpose of his plan. "Are you using me to get to these books?!" She accused, feeling offended. "Sorry mister." She scoffed. "But I got them first--"
To her surprise, Jin laughed. It wasn't a laugh she expected that would come out of him. It was really cute and contagious that she had to bite her lip to keep from laughing as well. "What's so funny--"
"The fact that you would think I would use you to get some dusty old books." He grinned.
"But you are--"
"No," he drawled as he pulled once again and leaned closer; so close that their faces were merely inches apart. "It's the other way around. I'm using these books to get a date with you."
Kaye's eyes widened and Jin only smiled warmly before pulling on the books and walking away. "I'll check these out." He half turned, waving the books at her. "You can meet me at the cafe down the block." He winked before walking away, leaving her standing there dumbfounded; unbelieving that Jin--although indirectly--just asked her out on a date.
End of Flashback
~~~

Jin woke up early the next day and went straight to the bathroom to freshen up. After a few minutes, he was already dressed in jeans and a simple white tee then moved to the bedroom to wake up Namjoon. He ordered him to wake up the others, as well. Hoseok and Yoongi were already awake, while Taehyung was sitting on his bed. But by the looks on his face, his mind was still absent and probably wondering to some unknown world. Jimin was nowhere to be found.

Jin moved to Jungkook's bed and found him in deep sleep. He shook him gently and the younger one groaned and looked at him. "Already?"

"Rise and shine, Jungkookie." He ruffled his hair before stepping back to leave the room.

"Yah~ Jin hyung." Jungkook called and Jin half turned in question.

"Hmm?"

"Happy Birthday." He yawned and Jin's eyes widened a bit, realizing that the fact that today was December 4th, his birthday, had completely slipped his mind.

"Did you forget?" Hoseok chuckled as he watched Jin's surprised expression.

"Of course not."

"You did." Taehyung pressed.

"I did not!"

"HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO YOU!!!" Jimin burst into the room singing and holding a strawberry-chocolate cake, with a candle lit in the middle. Jin stared as everyone started singing and he felt his heart soften at 's sweet gesture.

"Blow them out before I do." Taehyung implied and Jin glared at him, hitting him at the back of his head before blowing the off the candles.
Everyone clapped then Namjoon took the cake and brought it out of the room, "Let's eat."

Breakfast was a serving of orange juice, cake, and more cake. Usually Jin wouldn't approve of such an unhealthy breakfast, but considering the circumstances, he let it slip. Jin sat down at the head of the table, watching his bandmates eat happily and talk loudly and animatedly as usual. He let out a small smile, poking his fork at his slice of cake which until now, remained untouched.

"Hey," Jin felt a tap on his arm and as he glanced to his left, Yoongi was giving him a concerned gaze. "You okay?" He pointed at his plate. "You haven't touched your cake."

Jin smirked and took a big bite, just to show that he was fine. Yoongi shrugged and smiled as he continued eating his cake.

Jin munched but the cake tasted bland against his tongue, despite it being the sweetest and most decadent strawberry-chocolate cake there ever was. Well he assumed it was since Taehyung and Jungkook already had two slices each.

He reached out for his phone in his pocket and as he swiped it open, he frowned; feeling his heart heavy. Putting it back, he continued munching on his cake even though he was tasting nothing.

The sweetness of the cake overshadowed by the sadness and bitterness in his heart.

~~~
Halfway through the day, Jin felt like he's going through his schedules like a half asleep man on a cold winter's day. He went through the interviews well, but he didn't speak much. He practiced till his legs hurt; till he was soaked with sweat, and he even did a small signing event with the fans which cheered him up a bit though the bitterness remained.
How could she forget? He thought as he sat at the very back of the van, on the way back to the dorm.
Maybe she's busy, another side of him told; the rational side which told him that Kaye was a busy girl and has a life outside of their relationship.
But deep down, Jin couldn't help but feel neglected--betrayed even. Jin hadn't forgotten about her upcoming birthday and had worked hard to make sure that on that day, he would be able to come home and spend it with her.
Is a simple greeting that difficult?, he thought as he stared at his phone, waiting for a call--a text--anything!
"Problem?" Namjoon nudged him, sensing his hyung's distress.
"You think she forgot?" He muttered.
"What?" Namjoon asked, looking confused.
"You think she forgot my birthday?" He repeated and a look of realization dawned on Namjoon's face. "Kaye? Forget? She's wouldn't--"
"Well she hasn't texted me today or called or--"
"Did you check your email?"
"Why would I check my--?" Jin paused, realization dawning on him. She knew Kaye was always on her laptop and that her phone sometimes remained left in her room.
The van stopped and Jin immediately jumped out of the vehicle, pushing Taehyung back in his seat. "Hey!" The younger one protested as he was pushed back quite violently.
"Sorry!" Jin shouted before practically rushing into the dorm and plugging their computer on in their makeshift studio.
He logged onto his account and a smile literally broke his face in half when he saw that he had a message waiting for him in his inbox. His smile widened, if that was even possible, when he saw Kaye's email address on the screen.
He opened it up almost instantly and found a long letter flash on the computer screen. Jin sat down, his eyes glued to the screen and started reading.
Seokjin,
            Should I start calling you Darcy now?
I’m floored, to be honest. I wasn’t expecting such a beautifully written letter from you. Well actually I did… everything about you is beautiful, to be honest, and I’m not sure how you do it.
More importantly, I’m not sure what I did to deserve you.
