Chapter 4

The Senatorial Candidate

It has been a week since Soojin and Kyungsoo started living with Kris and it was hell! The apartment was invaded with toys and diapers that Kris wanted to pull all his hair out in frustration. Every corner of his apartment had been a reminder that that the peace in his home he had once enjoyed had already been taken away. His cupboard was filled with baby-friendly snacks. He found toys under the cushions of his sleek sofa. And the worst, what he hated the most, was finding used diapers that were not properly thrown to the garbage in the bathroom; he yelled for Kyungsoo every time. It was then that he regretted that there was only one bathroom in his apartment. But who would have thought that he was going to be in that situation anyway?

To add to all the bad things that had been happening in his home, the little baby girl, for some unknown reason, hated him. It was hard accepting the fact that Soojin may or may not have been his daughter. It became harder because she had made it known deliberately that she loathed Kris Wu’s existence. Every time they were left alone in the same room, Soojin would cry. If Kyungsoo was there, it was okay, but if she only had Kris with her, she would cry as if he had done something to hurt her.

Kris couldn’t help but be amazed somehow that Soojin was smarter for her age. She was only a year old for goodness sake! How could she already have known the difference between having Kyungsoo around or if it was only Kris with her? They were watching TV in the living room and Kyungsoo had to go into his and Soojin’s room that the latter started crying. One time, they were having breakfast and Kyungsoo had to leave the table that Soojin cried again. It was when Kris realized that the girl had antagonized feelings towards him.

And because of that, Kris had made a silent war with the baby girl. It was ridiculous, really, to be at war with a one year old. He was a six foot four inches adult and doing something like that was very disturbing. However, it wasn’t a battle to be really concerned about. If the baby girl didn’t like him, then he would just return the favor and wouldn’t get attached to her.

“Kyungsoo!!!!!” Kris screamed at the top of his lungs upon discovering that the stack of beers he had in his refrigerator were discarded and replaced with juices and drinks for a baby.

“What are you shouting for?” Kyungsoo asked in annoyance when he got in the kitchen to answer Kris’ call.

“Where are my beers? Where did you put them?”

Kyungsoo rolled his eyes before he pulled Kris away from the refrigerator and leaned over to get the beer from where he hid them. “I just relocated them so they’re not obvious. We have a baby in here and it’s not right to have an alcoholic drink inside the refrigerator along with all the baby snacks.” Kyungsoo pushed the can of beer onto Kris’ chest before he left.

“Stop re-arranging things in my apartment!” Kris called out after Kyungsoo.

A week after the formal announcement of the election results, the new young Senator’s schedule had been packed with TV guestings and interviews. Kris Wu was an unexpected winner in the senatorial race especially when he was up against established candidates. And his victory had caused quite a stir in the political arena. They hadn’t even properly had a victory party because the sensation was something Kris Wu’s team did not anticipate.

“So, Senator Wu, I bet a lot of people want to know, what do you look for in a life partner?” The host of the talk show finally asked. Kris had the feeling that it was actually the question that the host wanted to ask all along. All the other questions about his campaign and how he managed to win as a Senator were not as important as this one. It was a talk show anyway so the audience would be more interested in trivial matter in the life of the young Senator Kris Wu.

“Well, to be honest with you, I have a very specific ideal type.” Kris smiled at the host and continued, “He should be small in stature, has creamy white skin, and has a great smile. Of course, he should be fun to be with.”

“Ohhh…that’s interesting. I think you have a specific ideal type Senator because you are actually describing someone. Has someone already taken residence in your heart, Senator Wu?”

“I can’t believe you caught me, Soojung-sshi. Yes, I do in fact have someone I love right now.” Kris crossed his legs and rested his back on the sofa and his hands on the arm rest in a show of confidence.

“I can hear hearts breaking right now. This is not good news to all who are hoping to get your attention.” The host made an apologetic face at the camera as if she was saying sorry to all the hearts that had been broken by Kris’ confession.

Kris and Suho and the rest of the former’s PR team had discussed whether or not they would reveal that Kris was in a relationship. It shouldn’t really matter if he was. He wasn’t a celebrity to have to hide the status of his love life. However, they couldn’t deny the fact that part of the package that they had built Kris Wu on was his heartthrob image that may or may not have contributed to people voting for him; especially the young voters.

The blonde Senator didn’t want to lie about his relationship status. However, the problem lied with Baekhyun. His small fiancée wasn’t so keen about announcing that they were getting married because he hadn’t told his parents yet that he was marrying Kris. And it really mattered that Baekhyun’s parents knew about it first and whether or not Kris decided to reveal Baekhyun as his fiancée because Baekhyun was the President of South Korea’s son.

Their relationship wasn’t really a secret. But only a few people knew about. The people who mattered knew about it including Baekhyun’s parents. It was just that Baekhyun hadn’t told them yet that they were getting married because he was sent to Paris to be the President’s representative.

And so, Kris and his team settled for letting people know that he was in a relationship but wouldn’t necessarily reveal that it was Baekhyun, the son of President Byun.

The interview ended and Kris couldn’t help but sigh in relief that he was done for the day. It was the last thing on his schedule and for the first time in a span of two weeks he could go home early and rest.

He arrived in his home very spent after the entire schedule he went through. He had already felt very tired and he hadn’t even taken his oath of office yet. Technically, he wasn’t a Senator yet. He was only a Senator verbally until he would formally be sworn in in a month’s time. So it really concerned him he would be that tired more so when he officially became Senator in writing.

“Don’t worry. The crazy schedule is just for the mean time. The ruckus about your win will die down eventually and you can focus on the more important part of being a Senator later.” Suho assured which made Kris feel a little better.

The moment he entered his apartment, the sight that greeted Kris made him want to jump off his veranda. From where he was standing, he could see cookie crumbs on the floor and various snacks opened but were consumed only halfway. The TV was on, it was showing a penguin that had a weird but catchy name, singing about friends and jumping together.

Kris was about to yell about the mess in his living room when he was stopped by the sight that he never thought would skip a beating of his heart. Kyungsoo was splayed out on the couch, head slightly tilted to the side facing the television. On top of the sleeping Kyungsoo was a sleeping angel. Soojin was lying on her stomach on Kyungsoo’s chest, a thumb on while the hand was clutched onto Kyungsoo’s collar. The latter had his hands protectively on the baby’s back and must have been tapping the angel to sleep but ended up falling asleep as well.

Kris’ heart clenched at the view. It was utterly the most adorable thing he had ever seen his life. He had just gotten over his lustful desire of Kyungsoo when he learned how messy the smaller male could be especially with the baby. But this time, this was something different. It was something more worrisome. It wasn’t supposed to happen. His heart made a weird, erratic thump inside his chest and it was telling him that he was about to enter a dangerous territory.
