Chapter 1

The Senatorial Candidate
A/N: I am not familiar with how the political arena works in Korea. So I’m basing the political situations in this story with what I’m familiar with and know. Anyway, enjoy!

………………………………..

It wasn’t hard for Kyungsoo to find Kris Wu. Having the blonde’s face and name in posters and other election paraphernalia were a dead giveaway, especially when the man was pining to be the youngest senator of the country. It was also a big help that the man was one of the incumbent congressmen of their city. Well, the gorgeous, single, congressman that everybody wanted to take for themselves. The only problem left was how to get close to the congressman and get his message across. He couldn’t simply go up to the man and drop his bomb of a news. Well, first because the congressman’s security team wouldn’t allow that and second, he didn’t know where to catch the young senator aspirant as he was on a constant movement campaigning all over the country.

It was important that he gets to talk to the blonde congressman. The baby’s life depended on it. In as much as Kyungsoo never wanted to even let Congressman Wu know because he promised the mother that he wouldn’t, he couldn’t do that. He couldn’t take on the responsibility by himself—financially. He could even barely afford rent and food let alone take care of a baby that needed constant medication due to HCM. Kyungsoo was actually able to survive for a year with the baby but the more Soojin grew, her needs grew with her, and it was about time her father give her the caring she deserved.

Soojin’s mother was Kyungsoo’s bestfriend. Well, his only family for that matter. Kyungsoo was an orphan, he was left at the orphanage’s doorstep when he was a baby and Dara was the one who took care of him despite their not so big age difference. When Dara was old enough to leave and found a job, she got Kyungsoo out to live with her. They treated each other like siblings for they hadn’t known any other they could call family, they just had each other.

When he learned that Dara was pregnant, he cried unendingly. Not because of the responsibility that came along with having a baby but because he knew what that meant. Dara could die just by giving birth due to her heart condition, which was unfortunately passed on to Soojin. But his Noona was stubborn and wanted to keep the baby even if it meant she’d die. And when Dara gave birth to Soojin, she only lived long enough to make him promise that whatever happened, he would never tell Soojin’s father about her and to find Kris Wu.

It took him a year to finally come up with the courage to tell the young congressman about Soojin and Kyungsoo got his opportunity when he learned that the congressman would be at an election rally in their city. It was the last day of the campaign period and Wu Yifan, more known for his widely popular name Kris Wu, had decided to spend the last day campaigning in his own territory for dramatic effect. And Kyungsoo waited for the senatorial candidate behind the makeshift stage so he could finally talk to the man.

“Congressman Wu, wait! I need to tell you something.” Kyungsoo called out when the politician was about to get in his car and leave. But, just like any other candidate who wanted to make an impression on voters, the senatorial hopeful stopped and turned to pay attention to the little man. “Do you know someone named, Sandara Park?”

“I’m sorry, no. I don’t think I’ve had the pleasure of meeting her.”

“Well, I don’t think you haven’t met because she gave birth to your baby. You have a one-year old daughter, Congressman Wu.”

The expression on Yifan’s face was indescribable. Kyungsoo would have described it as shock but the scrunch on the congressman’s nose told him otherwise. He was suddenly shoved into the backseat of the car before he could think of anything, probably to avoid people from hearing more of what he was still about to say.

“What are you talking about? Who paid you to get me into bad publicity?” Yifan furiously inquired as he settled himself next to Kyungsoo who was struggling to settle himself on his seat. He ran his fingers through his hair to stop himself from punching the smaller male who was out to take him down. “And you’re timing is great I must say. It’s the election tomorrow.”

“What?!?! Nobody paid me!!! And I’m telling the truth. You have a one-year old baby who needs you right now. Her mother died and she needs her father.”

Kyungsoo didn’t know where the Congressman was taking him. The driver and the bodyguard in front were no help at all as they kept silent while their boss enumerated all the girls he had slept with and did a monologue about how dirty his election rivals played.

“Oh no, you are not telling the truth. You are doing this for money and I’m gonna get to the bottom of this. ! I need to call Suho. He knows what to do. Chanyeol, can you pass me my phone.”

The man in the front seat passed Kris’ phone to him and Kyungsoo just stared at the blonde disbelievingly. How could this man immediately dismiss that he had a daughter? Looking at the Congressman, he was a perfectly capable young man to produce a baby, so Kyungsoo couldn’t believe that the blonde was so quick to react negatively. In fact, the congressman was too gorgeous in close proximity that if only they were in a different situation Kyungsoo would have swooned and wished to be swept off his feet by this man. But they weren’t and Soojin was more important than his messed up fantasy.

“Suho, we have a situation. I’ll tell you about it when we get there.” Kris pushed a button on his phone to end the call and turned to face Kyungsoo. “Now, you are going to tell me who made you do this.”

“I told you, no one made me do this. I came on my own accord.”

“So you admit that you’re doing this on your own to extort money.” Kris concluded.

“What?! I did not say that. I only came to tell you that you have a daughter that needs your help.” Kyungsoo defended.

“If you need help with your baby my congressional office is always open. You could have gone there and asked for help.”

“First of all, she’s not my daughter, she’s yours. And second, what she needs is something your congressional office cannot give her. She needs her father to take care of her, which you are.”

“Are you really gonna keep this act till the end?”

“How many times do I have to tell you that I am not acting? It’s the truth; you have a daughter, Congressman Wu. And no matter how many times you deny her, it wouldn’t change the fact that she’s yours.”

“I’m gonna find out the truth eventually.” Kris threatened. “And when I do, you’re going to pay for this.”

Kyungsoo was about to counter when the driver interrupted. “Kris, we’re here.” And Kyungsoo couldn’t help but notice that he just addressed the Congressman on a first name basis.

“Thank you Tao. We’ll get off at the basement parking. I don’t want people to see him.”

When the car came to a stop, Kris commanded Kyungsoo to get off and had Tao him to where they were going. Kyungsoo noticed that there was another car with them which contained three other men in a suit just like what Chanyeol and Tao were wearing. But he was unable to take a good look at the others as Tao had begun dragging him to the elevator.

They reached the twentieth floor in deafening silence. Kyungsoo scowled at Tao who had a firm grip on his arm but the tall figure didn’t even budge and continued to ignore him. Kyungsoo wished he wasn’t manhandled so carelessly. He wasn’t going to run anyway, where would he go if he did? But Tao couldn’t take the hint and tightened his grip on Kyungsoo even more.

Kyungsoo was overwhelmed the moment the elevator doors opened. The floor was full of people talking on telephones, discussing with one another, or simply going over papers that may or may not have something to do with Kris Wu’s campaign. The minute he stepped into the room, he noticed a huge tarpaulin at the far left with Kris Wu’s face and name on it that said ‘for Senator’, blonde hair emphasized by the red background and handsome features complimented by amazing photoshopping.

“Kris, he’s waiting for us in the conference room.” Chanyeol announced and there it was again, first name basis. Kyungsoo was astounded. Didn’t anyone in Kris Wu’s team have any respect for his position?

He was even more surprised when all the people they passed by greeted Kris in the same manner. Nobody in the room ever addressed him as Congressman or Senator; he was only addressed as Kris. And the Congressman didn’t mind and greeted back with a smile. He even went as far as cracked a joke at one of his staff who was stuffing his mouth with food.

They turned right and were heading for a big room judging by the double doors. A man that Kyungsoo made out to be the same height as him, maybe taller than him by two inches, got up from where he was sitting and acknowledged Kris’ presence. Tao and the others left the room but Chanyeol stayed behind.

“What situation are you talking about, Kris?” the small man started which Kyungsoo thought to be the Suho that Kris talked to on the phone.

“Him.” Kris cocked his head to the side to point at the bewildered Kyungsoo.

“And how is he a situation?” Suho pressed on.

“You ask him.” Kris dismissed and wen to sit on the chair situated at the end of the conference table. Chanyeol followed him and sat on the chair behind.

Suho turned to him and reached out a hand for a handshake as he introduced himself. “Hi. I’m Kim Joonmyeon, Kris Wu’s chief-of-staff and campaign manager. But you can call me Suho and you are?”

“Hi! I’m Do Kyungsoo and I don’t have any title related to Kris Wu attached to my name.” Kyungsoo replied and accepted Suho’s hand in a handshake. He immediately pulled his hand away, embarrassed of how his calloused one must have felt against Suho’s.

Suho snorted. Kyungsoo didn’t mean for that to be a joke but the former was amused so he just shrugged.

“Mind telling me why Kris refers to you as a situation?”

“If by situation you mean that he has a one-year old daughter I told him about, then I guess I am.”

The look on Suho’s face was priceless. He had his mouth open in shock and his eyes gave that did-I-hear-that-right look. He shook his head to get out of his astonishment and offered Kyungsoo a seat so the latter could explain further.

He told Suho about Soojin and her situation and how Dara specifically told him to find Kris Wu. Suho listened to him and did not interrupt even for a second. Kyungsoo could tell that the short man was processing and analyzing everything that he just said, maybe looking for loopholes he could use to get Kris out of the situation.

“So, did your Noona tell you Kris is Soojin’s father or did she just say to find Kris?” Suho inquired and Kyungsoo could feel that the latter was already using his tactical mind on him to make him confused.

“She said to find Kris Wu.”

“I asked, Kyungsoo, because based on what you told me she said that she didn’t want Soojin’s father to know about her but then told you to find Kris. So it’s just confusing of her to ask you to locate Kris if he is the father but then didn’t want Kris to know about his daughter, isn’t it?”

“I can see what you’re trying to do here, Mr. Kim, but that’s not gonna work. I’m very sure that Congressman Wu is Soojin’s father.”

“Please, call me Suho. And I’m not doing anything to confuse you, Kyungsoo. I am just trying to make meaning of what your Noona told you. But if you’re sure, we can always prove that through DNA matching.”

“So, what do you suggest we should do?” Kris interrupted from where he was seated.

“Well, for the meantime, we need to keep Kyungsoo with us until the election is all over.”

“What?!?! I can’t stay here. I need to go home. There’s a baby waiting for me, remember?”

“I’m sorry, Kyungsoo, but we cannot take a chance and let this information leak out. The media will make a sensation out of this and hurt Kris’ campaign. And I’m pretty sure someone capable is taking care of Soojin right now or you wouldn’t be here.”

Kyungsoo was supposed to be angry with Suho but he couldn’t help but admire the man. There was a reason Kris turned to him for advice. The short male was smart beyond the pretty face. He was the epitome of ‘great things come in small packages’.

“He’s going to stay with you, right?” Kris asked hesitantly.

“Oh no, he isn’t. He’s staying with you. He is YOUR situation after all.” Suho laughed.

“No! What if people see him? Isn’t that gonna create an intrigue?” Kris declined aggressively. Why would Suho even suggest he let the brunette stay with him? Wasn’t he the one who came up with the idea?

“That’s the least of your worries, Kris. There’s something else more worrisome than that.”

Kyungsoo just stayed silent as the two men bicker about who would take him in. He didn’t actually care about the subject at the moment. What he cared about was how to get out of the building so he could go home to Soojin. His ahjumma boss was gracious enough to volunteer on taking care of the baby that he couldn’t possibly abuse the kindness by not coming home. He pondered more on the matter at hand when he was snapped back into the conversation going on at the background.

“Oh yeah? What is more worrisome than that?” Kris challenged.

“Byun Baekhyun. Your fiancée, remember?”

Kris groaned and slapped his palm on his forehead.
