Foreword
Prologue
I sat the withering lifeless flowers down on the bedside table. The dull monitor screen beeped its constant beeps as it had been beeping for the last four years.
"Mom, how are you today? You look pretty as usual." I said brightly as I fixed the window curtains, releasing a burst of sunshine into the dark hospital room.
As with always, there was no reply.
Her eyelids have been shut for so long and were rarely open that I forgot what her eyes actually looked like. But luckily, I had a photo of her when she was at my high school graduation. She had beautiful wide and clear eyes that seemed to have a warm light brown glow to it. Sadly, I had my dad's dark beady eyes, a constant reminder that I was still related to that jerk.
I gently wiped my mom's face with a damp clean towel and watched the wetness on her cheeks dry up. She looked so weak and helpless but there was nothing I could do. Except somehow find the money for the chemotherapy that she badly needed and maybe even a surgery.
I grimaced as I thought about the money that I didn't have and then sighed.
Giving her a quick kiss on her cheek, I whispered into her ear, "I'll save you mom, I promise. I'll keep you alive." That was a promise I was willing to keep, no matter what the cost.
