Red Skys and Royal CardsI won top of my class for Combat, which is reason for celebration, but it came at the price of the whole competition being cancelled. As soon as we were finished the match the Professor announced the news to all in attendance.
There has been turmoil and rough waters in the Dealer community, which has increased since the Academy competition commenced. Added to the incident where a Dealer and their Warrior nearly destroyed and killed dozens of students and high ranked Royals and the discovered plot to murder my parents, it was deemed safest for the students to resume regular classes as soon as possible.
Duel Combat would continue, though, for the remainder of the week. The final match between the last remaining student and the Descendant was to take place in a week, on Monday afternoon. The entire Academy was expected to attend this event, along with quite a few Royals.
“Has anyone seen Lay recently?” Chen asked after stepping out onto the patio with the last of dinner.
We all looked at each other from where we were scattered around the patio and pool. All of the boys shook their heads and looks of worry crossed their faces. “The last time I saw him he said he was going for a walk out of the house. He hasn’t returned since.” Chanyeol responded.
“We should try and find him, something might have happened.” Luhan worried. “It’s not like him to disappear like this.
“Leave him be.” I spoke up from the recliner I was on at the poolside. “He’s fine and safe.”
“Where is he?” Kris asked.
I shrugged, “I honestly have no idea. He’s helping one of my professors with something.”
“Did I miss dinner again?” Speaking of him, Lay appeared in the doorway with his hair dishevelled and exhaustion clearly evident on his face.
“We were just wondering where you were, Lay. You don’t look very good.” Kai commented before shoving a mouthful of turkey into his mouth.
“I’ve been busy.” He responded as he approached my side. “Jaylene wanted me to pass this along to you, she said you requested it.”
He handed me a large folder with confidential tapped across it in bright blue writing. Case Number: 673526 was written underneath in carefully printed hand writing.
This was L’s file from the case he was convicted in. This had all the evidence against him that proved he was guilty. There had to be something in here that could clear him. I had to believe there was.
“Thanks, Lay.” I breathed, placing my hand on his check when he crouched down by my side. “You don’t look good, Lay. You’re exhausted, what have you been up to?”
Lay smiled softly and nuzzled into my hand, “I could say the same for you, Sky. You need to rest as well. You are injured, if you weren’t aware. You took a hit during your fight and the hits you made gave you some very small fractures in your hand and tibia. Do you not turn your Ability inward? It doesn’t only heal others, it can help you as well.”
Lay avoided talking about himself, he focused everything on me. I didn’t miss it, but I wasn’t going to press him if he didn’t want to, but I don’t like seeing him so worn down and tired after only a few days of being away from the house.
The other boys had resumed eating dinner and talking amongst themselves, Suho and Xiumin were playing with the pool from the other side of where Lay and I were.
“How does it work internally?” I asked him. I’ve seen Lay use his Specialty and have used it myself, but it has all only been on the wounds of others. Mostly Suho and occasionally on the other ten boys when we are training or they do something stupid in the house.
“It’s something to train you on another time.” He answered. “It takes more time to learn, and more precision it accomplish. I’ll take care of you and your injuries for the time being.”
I felt the warmth of Lay’s power spread through my body. “Thank you, Lay. I’m sure we will find time after everything here is resolved.” He smiled and kissed my palm softly. “What have you been off doing?”
“Using my knowledge to help the sick and injured.” He reluctantly answered. “I’m going to spend as much time as I can helping out at the Medical Building. They don’t have a doctor, and the ancient knowledge of medicine I once learned, and thrived in, is able to help them.”
He answered this time around. “Are you using your Specialty?” I asked him what I was most curious about.
“No. I don’t use it.” He answered quickly.
“Do you want to?” I questioned him softly.
Lay shook his head with a sigh. “I’d rather not. It may be inevitable, but I would rather use ancient healing knowledge and modern medical science to help other. Not a power I acquired by hurting and killing people who were innocent or needed help.”
I bushed my hand through his hair, “Do you want to keep doing this? Helping out there?”
“I’d like to, yes.” He responded
