“I’m sorry to inform you, ma’am,” the doctor stood with his eyes downcast, clutching the clipboard tightly in his hands, “but there’s nothing much we can do for your son.”

The hospital was hushed at the dark hour of the night, its hallways empty and the streetlights outside blinking weakly in the unexpected and sudden storm that roared in the middle of summer. No one had expected such strong rain, nor had the frail woman expected to be called in here at such a godly hour.

Not for something like this.

“Nothing? Nothing at all?”

Her voice quivered, a complete contrast to the slow beeping of the heart monitor by the bed.

The doctor’s gaze shifted to the sleeping brunette—another victim to the unexplainable harsh realities of life.
