Symptoms

Description

Kim Jongdae suffered from an accident that damaged his brain. Because of the trauma, he experienced symptoms that caused him to revert back to behaving like a toddler between the ages of 3 and 4 years old, even though he is a 22 year old man. Tazzer is his long time friend and caretaker.

Foreword

It wasn't like they were best friends, romantically involved, or anything really. They were classmates that met in high school. Both being asked to step out of their shared math class to splash water on their faces so they could stay awake. Him finding out her unique name as they walked to the restroom, sealed the deal. As he put it, "How could I miss the teacher asking if a Choi Tazzer, was present in class?"

They socialized at school, but never really outside of it. He had his own guy friends while she had her own girl friends. They did their own things, went their own separate ways, simply living life they carved out for themselves. But through it all, they kept in touch. A text here, a text there. Whenever she needed something, which she rarely did, she could ask him and he would do what he could for her. It was how she got her a nice running car for a low price. Jongdae had kept a look out for her, and called immediately when he ran across the perfect match. The same could be said for her when she found he was moving out of his parents house and needed a place to stay. A vacant room had just opened up in her building on the second floor just beneath her floor. She sent him a quick text letting him know about it and the perks of staying in the area.

Though they hadn't seen each other for a while, texting or phoning was the way they kept in touch. He was busy pursuing his career as a journalist, putting himself through schooling, while she was a nurse majoring in hospital care and as a minor in home care. As soon as he moved into her building, their lack of one on one time disappeared. He would wait for her on her way to work, walking her to her car and sometimes hitching a ride to his university when he didn't feel like spending his own gas. She would cook dinner for two, inviting him up a floor, to her apartment claiming that he needed warm home cooked meals on occasion. The relationship they had in high school that continued over the phone, only blossomed into a mutual understanding. Since they like the same things, it wasn't hard for them to stand each others company for hours at a time.

Most of those things changed when she recognized the latest trauma victim in the Emergency Room. She was only passing through because she parked closer to the E.R. end of the hospital, but when she heard the name "Kim Jongdae" being said by the paramedics to a focused nurse, she immediately stopped in her tracks. It couldn't be her Kim Jongdae, childhood friend and neighbor? With there only being one way to find out, she approached the nurse, asking for information. Of course, the confidentiality rule applied, no information on the patient being given to anyone but the guardian.

There couldn't be many Kim Jongdae's in that area, so she quickly ran through points about the Jongdae she knew as the nurse agreed to the description of his age, current hair color, and weight description before she said she was his temporary guardian until his parents arrived.

Quickly the nurse retrieved the paper work rambling off the knowledge she knew of the accident in a bland, spit-fire way.

"Car accident victim. Larger sized vehicle hit the driver side of the patients car sending him catapulting out of the passenger side window. Suspected trauma to the head from the impact of the passenger window and the distance he was thrown. Doctors are stopping the bleeding from his head right now I am sure and inspecting any other damage. Let's hope for the best."

The best, she lingered on the thought in worry, let's hope for it.

Shortly after the doctors stabilized Jongdae and ensured his blood and oxygen were flowing properly to his brain and that his blood pressure was controlled, the doctors moved on to scan his body for other injuries. It was nearly a miracle that he didn't have any major bone damage to his limbs beside some burns and scratches that would heal nicely with proper treatment. His family was notified of his chances of survival increasing from a minimal percentage to one much higher. Tazzer was relieved, especially since she found herself having to be strong for both of his parents. The specialist in brain trauma, explained that he was sedated and undergoing neurological exams. To be sure they ran him through the neuroimaging process, with an MRI and CT scans. What they found was troublesome, both to the doctor's and to the loved ones of the patient.

The severity of Jongdae's head trauma was debilitating and life-changing.

After weeks of healing that turned to months of recuperation, Jongdae's parents had come to a conclusion upon the bases of the results from the doctors. He may never live a normal life ever again. When he first woke up, he couldn't remember anything. As he woke up more, and his senses slowly came back to him, the affects of his head trauma became more apparent. He had be affected cognitively and he showed the symptoms more and more. Difficulty processing information, difficulty expressing thoughts, difficulty understanding others, a shortened attention span, inability to understand abstract concepts, impaired decision-making ability, and memory loss. The more his parents looked on, the more he reminded them of a Jongdae that grew up 18 years ago. His speech and behavior was, dare they think it, toddler-like. He would need an at home care taker, the doctor wanting him to be in a familiar place that would help his lack of memory. It was too much for his parents to even consider!

After another few weeks of deliberation, they decided on one of the best approaches for their son, by assigning Tazzer as his at home care taker. To them, it was a perfect idea. They were long term friends, neighbors, and Tazzer had experience being an at home nurse. To them, she could easily move into his apartment and set up her own home while helping rehabilitate their son.

It all made sense and fell into place as they planned. Jongdae being released from the hospital, moving him and her back into his apartment, and his friends visiting just for him to not remember them all, everything went accordingly.

It was alright for everybody else, but to Tazzer, she always felt alone even though Jongdae was always present with her.
