The Bangtan Boys

Seven young men who are upholding the values of ‘real music’

Depending on the message to be conveyed, the methods and the tools differ. These seven young men have tempered the outspoken strength of hip-hop with a flood of smooth, sweet melodies.

Their image is supposed to be a rough and masculine one. But each and every one of the Bangtan Boys gave a formal bow as he entered the studio. These young men strive to convey their message through hip-hop music in order to uphold the values they deem to be true. It looks as if rough eyes and voices hide away their pure interiors.

Q: “One month since your debut! A lot of things have happened in that time, such as taking the number 1 spot on the Hanteo charts. Tell me, what has been your most memorable moment?"

Suga: “The first broadcast! Everything was sloppy, but I was so excited I didn’t care. (Laughs)”

Rap Monster (Rap-mon): “The time when we performed on stage decorated with LED lights, everything looked amazing.

Q: "The song “Born Singer” was released one month after your debut. In it, you expressed, ‘The one-time play has begun, and the blood and sweat of three years have evaporated in just three minutes.’ These lyrics made me believe that you all are quite mature, despite your young age. Who is the oldest member? Point to him on the count of three." (The majority of the fingers point to Rap-mon.)

Suga: “Rap-mon is the person who is most suited to be the leader. He is thoughtful and considerate. There are a lot of things we can learn from him.”

J-Hope: “He takes care of the rest of us. He’s been through a lot, and he really is a

deep thinker.”

Q: "The name Bangtan Boys means ‘protecting our values from the biases and oppressions of the world.’ What bias or form of oppression would each member most like to see disappear?"

Rap-mon: “I hope the tendency to belittle individuality or a person’s unique way of expression will change. I think how people do their hair or what they wear are up to a person’s tastes. Hair and clothes? Aren’t the things totally unrelated to what a person actually needs to philosophize over?”

Suga: “Hmm…… I hope that the bias against idol music disappears. I think it’s wrong for people to assume that all idol artists lack musical talent. We listen to good music from abroad, and we try to make better music all the time. I want that skewed view of idols to change.”

“You’re right! I also think we need to get rid of the belief that people who listen to rock music from overseas are classier than those who listen to music from pop idols. The Bangtan Boys could help accomplish this bit by bit, right? Isn’t the world changed one step at a time?”

(The Bangtan Boys remain silent, only nodding their heads. It’s

unclear whether or not they are nodding in agreement.)

Q: “Each of you must have a surefire way of pulling in your fans. What do you think is your most attractive quality?"

Ji-min: “My eyes when I smile.”

Jin: “No double eyelids, but I have big eyes, and my face is one that sets off the motherly instinct? (Laughs)”

Jeong-guk: “The fact that my stage image and the real me are very different!”

V: “I think it’s the variety of facial expressions that I have.”

Rap-mon: “I try to project my voice on stage to reach all of our fans, so I think that is my strongest point.”

Suga: “The first time I went on stage, my eyes were busy following the camera around. These days, though, I try to make eye contact with the fans. I think eye contact is a form of personal contact.”

J-hope: “I wear a mask, so my eyes are accentuated. I try to express everything through my eyes. Hmm…my appeal must come from the passion that shows in my eyes!” (He stresses that his eyes are where his passions are conveyed.)

Q: "What are some of your personal dreams?"

Ji-min: “It’s more of a target than a dream. I’d like to fully train my voice in order to be able to sing as well as the other members.”

Jin: “I want to act and impress my fans with a real-to-life character.”

Jeong-guk: “I want to improve my singing abilities and develop as a songwriter and lyricist.”

V: “I want to make the Bangtan Boys known across the world. And ultimately, my dream is to become a cool dad.”

Rap-mon: “I want to become a world-famous rapper!”

Suga: “I want to become a musician who is recognized by the general public as well as hardcore music lovers.”

J-Hope: “I want to become a J-hope who can sing, write songs, and write lyrics well. I also hope that the Bangtan Boys become world famous. No, wait, we will become world famous.”

When all their basic instincts are seen there is nothing more to hide. The Bangtan Boys, however, still have a lot to show from within. Aren’t you curious as to what rhymes the Bangtan Boys will pour out next?
