Between Worlds

The Other Side of the Mirror

Double updated! Go back one chapter :))

Okay. Okay. So. *breathe in, breathe out*

So somehow, somehow they're back. In their own world. HOW?

"You kids are back?" Ahjusshi Han gasped and rushed out from behind the counter, ushering them in quickly and scanning their faces thoroughly. He seemed to be exceptionally elated to see them and well, who wouldn't.

The gang was still getting over the fact that they had mysteriously appeared on the other side of the mirror back to their own side of the world with no reasonable explanation.

"You kids are the good kids from this side aren't you?" Ahjusshi Han rambled on without giving them a chance to speak. "Oh of course you kids are. The bad ones wouldn't even bother entering an antique shop like mine and would have sprouted at least twenty lines of vulgarities by now. How are you kids doing, have you managed to save Sehun from his so-called crimes?" Questions shot out continuously.

Baekhyun stood unsteadily and lowered himself onto a chair shakily. "Ahjusshi Han, this is our side of the world right? We're back."

"Of course we're back you toot!" Chanyeol whispered, looking slightly pale himself. "This Ahjusshi Han is alive!"

Sunmi suddenly felt the urge to cry as a wave of tears suddenly collected themselves behind her eyes. Gosh she so wanted to return back home but she had no idea how to. She wanted to cry because she missed her parents, because of home-sickness, because of desperation as Sehun was still in trouble. Deeper trouble than before.

Before she knew what was happening, the gang had engulfed her in a giant group hug together with Ahjusshi Han. The boys squeezed her so tight that Sunmi thought she was about to combust into flames, but heck she didn't care as she hugged them back just as tightly.

They were back. Back home.

"How on earth did we manage to come back?" D.O. whispered in awe, wiping his damp cheeks. "Oh hell with that, I'm going to call my parents." he ran for the landline in the shop and dialed the familiar number quickly.

The boys were suddenly disinterested in how they were brought back home, and were all fighting to be next in line for the phone to call their families. It was their choice to follow Sunmi over to the other side in the name of friendship and loyalty, but that didn't mean they didn't miss their own families or regret their own choices.

Sunmi was left standing next to Ahjusshi Han and the old man ruffled her hair. "Don't cry, you're back. Isn't that great?" he comforted.

Sunmi sniffled and her dry lips. "Yes and no." she stared up at Ahjusshi Han, biting her lip. "But Sehun....we didn't manage to save him, Ahjusshi Han. He's caught and being sent to jail. For how many decades of imprisonment, I don't know. All I know is that he's suffering for a crime he didn't commit."

Ahjusshi Han flinched. "You didn't manage to save him?" he tried his best not to look disappointed, knowing that it would pain the girl even more. "Well there must be a way. Cheer up." he patted her back.

Sunmi forced  a bitter smile and Ahjusshi Han sighed. "At least you're back home right?"

Sunmi lowered her eyes to the ground. Yes, she was back home.

However a home without Sehun didn't seem anymore like a home than when she was on the other side of the mirror.

"Umma? Appa?" Sunmi stepped cautiously into the house she knew so well.

Her heart was thumping rapidly as she looked around, yearning to catch a glimpse of the two people she missed so much. It wasn't fair to them, she realized, that they had to go through all this without even knowing what was happening. Sunmi had no idea how the other Sunmi acted while she was gone.

Perhaps her parents would blame her sudden change in character as a freaking long PMS period. Or perhaps they wouldn't even have noticed the change.

"Oh, you've finally decided to return."

Sunmi snapped her gaze to where her father's voice had come from, and saw him leaning against the wall with his arms folded in front of his chest, looking haggard as fatigue lined his every feature, looking very much older than she last remembered.

Oh gosh what had he gone through while she was gone?

"Yeobo, don't be harsh on her." Mrs Kim appeared from behind her husband and rushed over to her daughter, scooping her up in a tight embrace. "I won't allow you to disappear on us like that ever again." Mrs Kim whispered fiercely into Sunmi's hair. "I don't care if you do drugs or anything, just please, stay safe and let us know you're alright."

Sunmi hugged her mother back tightly but couldn't help but feel slightly dumbfounded by the choice of words. Drugs? Sunmi swallowed, suddenly getting the idea of what sort of a daughter her parents had to deal with while she was gone. The other Sunmi was definitely a very different character from herself.

Sunmi looked over at her father who seemed glad to see her, but at the same time disappointed and dejected. "Do you think this is the life we want our daughter to live?" he asked tiredly. "We don't even know what brought about the abrupt change. You were such a sweet girl one night and the next day you were cussing and doing all sorts of nonsense together with the EXO boys. Why did you kids change?'

Mrs Kim pulled back to stare at her daughter and Sunmi swallowed. Could she tell? Would they believe her?

She couldn't help but think that her parents had the right to know what was going on. After all, they felt the impact of the change, and had been suffering for an unknown reason. They had the right to know.

Sunmi took a deep breath as she pushed her hair behind her ear, meeting her parents' eyes. "Umma, appa, I think there's something you have to know. Something about Sehun."

"What do you mean you know how we were transported back home?" Chanyeol gushed as he rushed into the antique shop. "This had better be good because I was having steamboat with my family!" he huffed.

Ahjusshi Han had suddenly given all of them a call, stating that he knew the reason why they had suddenly managed to return to this world with no particular action on their part, especially when they didn't manage to find any enchanted mirrors and they were more than sure that their other world doppelganger would never be smart enough to know anything about the mirrors.

Ahjusshi Han nodded and gathered them, closing the door behind him. "Okay before I explain my theory, let's do a recap." he muttered. "In the beginning, Devil and Sehun changed places because of the mirror I gave Sunmi. Let's call that Sunmi's mirror, A."

Everyone nodded.

"And then, the Devil managed to find another mirror and he changed places back with Sehun. So now he's back in this world, his original world, and Sehun is back in his own world. Right?" Ahjusshi continued. "Let's call that the Devil's mirror, B."

"So?" Kai raised a brow, clearly impatient.

"Patience." Ahjusshi Han cooed. "Okay, so now after that second switch, you guys wanted to go over to help Sehun. So you guys used my mirror, the third enchanted mirror  C that we know of in existence. Right?"

"Yes." everyone echoed.

"I always thought that you could only use the mirror to travel to the other side once." Ahjusshi Han looked more and more excited. "That was what the person told me when he sold me the mirror as well. Apparently the mirror can be used as some sort of a webcam between the two worlds as well, but that isn't very important. My point is that we always thought the mirror could only act as an one-way ticket to the other side."

"Isn't it?" Suho asked in awe.

Ahjusshi Han shook his head. "Nope. Because I suddenly remembered that I broke a mirror by accident. Yesterday. I broke the third mirror, my mirror C, the mirror responsible for transporting you guys over to the other side.

Ahjusshi Han beamed brightly. "Don't you guys see? I didn't even think much of it because I thought the mirror couldn't be used anymore since it was already used once. Apparently it can act as a return ticket as well!" he gushed. "When I broke the mirror, the spell is broken and the people who switched places using that mirror C will return to their original worlds. That was how you guys came back!"

"So what you're saying is that we used your mirror C to get to the other world," Baekhyun said slowly, digesting. "And when the said mirror broke, we returned?"

"So this means," Sunmi continued, her eyes lighting up. "If we break either the Devil's mirror B or my first mirror A, one spell will be broken and Sehun and the Devil will switch places again!"

D.O. frowned. "This also means that both mirrors CANNOT be broken at the same time, if not there'll be a double switch and the Devil will remain here forever and we can't see Sehun anymore."

"My first mirror A-" Sunmi blinked.

"Is with me. I kept it." Ahjusshi Han pointed to it on a shelf.

"And the Devil's mirror B was found by Sehun when he got switched to the other side. That was how we managed to communicate with the mirrors the other time." Sunmi bit her lip. "Oh no. So where is the Devil's mirror? Is it still on the other side? If someone breaks that mirror B after we break this mirror A we have, then nothing would have changed. Sehun would still be on the other side as there'll be a double switch."

"We can break mirror A to get Sehun over on this side first," Chanyeol scratched his head. "And then pray hard that no one finds mirror B and that it'll never be damaged?"

D.O. frowned. "That's so risky. Say the Devil finds the mirror and breaks it, he'll be able to change places again and we'll lose Sehun forever."

"But what do you suppose we do?" Sunmi was on the verge of crying. "That we wait till someday someone on the other side finds mirror B and breaks it so that Sehun can return? When will that happen?"

Kai grabbed fistfuls of his hair in irritation. "Isn't there a way that-"

"Guys?"

Everyone turned to Suho.

He grinned gingerly and pulled out something from his bag pack. "I just realized that mirror B is here with me as well." he laughed sheepishly. "Sehun passed it to me when we went over to the other side. So now we have both mirror A and mirror B. We just have to break one and make sure the other doesn't."

"You lifesaver." Kai muttered under his breath, shaking his head in disbelief.

Without saying anything, Sunmi threw herself at Suho with a giant hug and grabbed the mirror from his hands, smashing it onto the ground. She gave a huge breath, her eyes wide with tension and she finally allowed herself to relax.

There, it was done.
