01: Korea is Korea!

What Not to Add in Fanfics [COMPLETE]

1/101

A Mistake that 99% of writers on Asianfanfics make with0ut realising:

Korean high schools aren't American High Schools.

Now you're probably thinking,

What? When did I make a mistake like that?

But before you get to writing your fanfics, you need to learn and keep in mind- The lifestyle and the school style of What Korea really is.

I know this because I've read millions of Fanfics here on Asianfanfics, and I haven't seen one decent writer (Sometimes even Korean ones)

Write the story to what they really should be.

First of all,

I think the reason why many people assume that Korean Schools are similar to American style high school is because

After the dramas Dream high 1 & 2 came out, the school style and culturral and education was completely changed--

Blindfolding everyone to thinking that Korean Schools are really like that, when in reality it's not.

This is what a regular Korean classroom looks like. ALL.

This is what a Korean school does NOT look like.

This is a typical american school, not a Korean one.

Some fanfics I've read they mention that the boy and the girl sit next to each other and they develop intimate feelings for each other,

but that is not the case. In Primary school, you are allowed to sit together with a partner but as you get into middle schools

and high schools, you will be expected to sit in a single table like this, as cheating becomes common and individual studies become important.

But that's not always the case,

Sometimes it occurs that two students can sit together, but it's rare for that to be found in Korean Schools these days.

Lockers.

Ah, Most fanfics - - -

"I asked the teacher for a toilet break before I headed outside the classroom to go to my locker, where I could get a breath of air"

And so on.

PLEASE.

Refer back to that classroom picture.

Korea doesn't have enormous lockers placed out in corridors where you collect your books for each period.

They are extremely conservative of their studying time,

and so if you look at the picture you will realise you can see small boxes placed at the back wall of the classroom.

Those are their lockers.

Now I wasn't able to find a decent picture of a middle school so just tend to this Primary school version.

DSC06729.jpg

They have square sized lockers at the back of their classroom, where the basics things such as their valuables

and their books, are all stored inside. You will be required to purchase a lock, so that it is safe.

Bags do not go inside this tiny locker, as there wouldn't be enough safe and there are hooks already provided on the bottom of the desks

where you can hang your bag.

Ignore that hot beast and look beyond him. The green squares? Those are your lockers

Korea is very time observant to make sure students dont waste any time doing useless things when they could be studying.

Second thing, Cafeterias.

I can see how Dream High has a extreme effect on how non-koreans think of Korean schools.

That, IS NOTHING CLOSE to a korean cafeteira.

Even teachers will dream on, never getting it. This is just because this is a drama, everything is all fancy and the people are pretty.

Pretty much what Normal schools are.

And they have a strict menu, and rice must be a MUST.

So bread, it's not even possible to ask for.

The Menu is the same, but the health routines go about as Rice, KimChi and Soup are Common things on all menues.

Chapter 13: Ugh, you have no idea how much I love you guys for doing this. I am going to refer this thread to everyone I know who has made these mistakes. I think I'll put it on my wall lol.

Chapter 13: I've enjoyed these tips and gladly, i've noticed I don't make as much cliche mistakes but just one or two at times.

I've got a question though.
Is it bad to title your chapters as numbers or as kind-of like a plot name.
I usually struggle to keep a reader guess where they've left off with number chapters (which I grow frustrated with as well) or if I should just write it as any other way ?

Thank you for making these tips. Made me open my eyes more ^^

Chapter 12: can you do one on cliche characters? Or overly sweet/overly badass/overly anything? Do one on fics that use bits of korean amid english speech (or was that sort section about it done? Maybe you haven't emphasized that enough, since many fics are still doing it. rly peeves me out) And maybe criticize some plots.
IDK just throwing ideas out here.

Chapter 1: I've skipped around and read a few chapters already, and may I say I LOVE THIS. Keep updating. It really peeves me the way fanfics always portray school as something it's not.
This is gold. Should be necessary reading for all new fanfic writers.
