Learn Mandarin With Me! (Proverbs & Idioms)

So what's Idioms?

成语 [chéngyǔ] are a type of traditional Chinese idiomatic expressions, most of which consist of four characters.

Chengyu were widely used in Classical Chinese and are still common in vernacular Chinese writing and in the spoken language today.

We shall learn more about it!(:

拔苗助长 [bá miáo zhù zhǎng]

Trying Too Hard

Break Down

拔 – pull out

苗- shoots

助- help

长- grow

Lit. Help the shoots grow by pulling them up.

Meaning To spoil something by trying too hard, or having a  negative impact on a thing through excessive enthusiasm.

Example

学生词可别拔苗助长 [Xué shēng cí kě bié bá miáo zhù zhǎng]

When learning new vocabulary, don’t overdo yourself (by learning too many words at once)
