Foreword

"Let's break up!"

He has said it with indifference, averting his eyes, looking anywhere but her. It isn't until he finishes the last word that he turns back to see her reaction.

Amber stands there like a statue staring at the guy she has been in a relationship with for the past twelve months.

He has got to be kidding her. Is this April Fools' Day? He was the one who pursued her like an eager little puppy before they started going out. He was, and has been, the one crazy about her. He is the one who dotes on her more than she does him. In the past year, they have been a very happy-go-lucky couple, they fight like teenagers their age, but there has been no major conflict at all.

This isn't April Fools' Day. This must be a joke. But he never joked about this. He is the one who gets all sulky whenever she jokingly threatens to break up whenever they have their childish fight.

Her lips purse, her eyes narrow. The dry summer wind breezes past them, waving her fringe away from her forehead. The contact reawakes her mucles.

"Oh Se Hun, you better tell me that you're joking or I'm going to punch your beautiful face."

He stammers, his voice coming out strained as he looks like he is trying his best not to cry. "I'm not joking," he hisses, his fists clenching.

This is Se Hun Oh's pained expression, she muses. Se Hun isn't a good liar, nor is he a good actor. He is forced to do this, to break up with her. By what, or who? His parents have been very nice to her and don't seem to disagree with their relationship. Then what is making him do this? Is someone blackmailing him?

Amber takes a deep, deep, deep breath. Crossing her arms, she closes her eyes and furrows her brows, deep in thought. The silence must be killing Se Hun. Amber could sense, and hear, him fidgeting. She is being abnormal. When she is angered, it would mean apocalypse to whoever has upset her. It is just too odd to Se Hun to see how calm she is.

When she finally opens her eyes, he jerks in surprise. She always wonders why he always sticks with her when he is scared of her explosive temper; she has always thought that it must be his blind love for her that keeps him coming back and adoring her.

"Why?"

She doesn't know whether she is seeing right, but a tear seems to have dropped from his eyes as he gazes down for a moment. He stutters again, "I-I'm sorry. I really love you, but we can't be together." She searches his eyes for reason, but is startled when they well up in tears. "I'm getting married."

This time, Se Hun has said it like a death sentence.

---

On the other side of the school, the same words are uttered by a young teenage girl to her boyfriend. She has said it with deep remorse, but finality. Looking straight into his eyes, she hopes he woud cooperate despite the knowledge that he would surely react otherwise.

Myung Soo lifts an eyebrow incredulously. Is this April Fools' Day? It surely is not! It's early June.

"If this is a joke, it's not funny, Krystal!" he says with seriousness in his voice.

"I'm not joking," her voice mirrors his. Her face is detached of any emotion. It's her mask, Myung Soo knows. There's a vulnerable girl who needs to be protected behind that charade despite her cold and tough exterior. "You're not going to be happy about this, but let me assure you that I'm the most unhappy here. It took me two weeks to come to terms with it and finally decide to let it go." She pauses and takes a deep breath, "I'm getting married."

Oh! Is she proposing to him? Let's break up and then get married?

He releases an amused chuckle. "Krys, isn't this too fast?"

Krystal slouches her shoulder and rolls her eyes. "Not with you, Myung! I'm getting married to the guy my parents have chosen for me!" she exclaims exasperatedly. Her face is contorted in frustration. She must have known about this for a while, fought against it like she would given her character, but decided to give in because of a certain reason.

"You've got to be kidding!" he snorts, gaping at her in disbelief. "What world is this? Why did you agree with it? I thought they like me?"

"It's not about you, Myung-"

Of course. It's about her.

"It's about my parents! The company lost a great amount of money. Jae Joong alone can't help my dad completely with the loss. He made an agreement with this other company to get their help to pay for what they've lost, but for some reason or other, he and the owner of that company also want to join families."

Krystal closes her eyes, taking a deep breath. It seems to him that she has been holding it in for a while and although she is relieved that it's finally out, she still doesn't want to face the fact that she has agreed to her parents about this.

"What about Jess? Why don't they get her to marry that guy?" Myung Soo's voice is thick with panic and unwillingness to let his girl go.

"Jess is engaged to Jae Joong already," she answers tiredly, as if explaining to a ten-year-old. "They can't break the engagement and lose face. Besides, Jae is already stable. He is a CEO of the Gods of the East Hotel."

So the problem comes back to him now. He is just a high school kid who is graduating next year and this guy Krystal's parents are marrying her off to must be some CEO or top-notch lawyer or the owner of a hospital already. Not that his family isn't well-off itselves, it's the fact that he, Myung Soo, is still a 'kid' whose future is unknown. And the unknown is seen as a vulnerability.

"But you don't love him, Krystal! You don't even know this guy!" he argues, trying to hang on to ger, to make her stay by his side and forget all this nonsense. "He could be some old e who preys on young girls like you!"

"Ugh," she groans. "I'm trying to do what's best here. My future also depends on this, Myung! Without the company, who's going to pay for my tuition fee and expenses? What about my uni education? I-"

"Marry me then!" he blurts out. "I'll get my parents to pay for your education!"

"Myung Soo! Your parents aren't some sort of agency who helps people pay for their education! They've got you and Moon Soo in their hands already! What makes you think they'd pay an outsider's school fee?"

"That's why I said marry me!" he hisses.

He must be crazy, he contemplates. He is not ready for marriage at this age. It's the desperation to make what is already his stays his and he'll do whatever it takes to make sure of that.

Krystal gives him a look as if he has gone mad. "I'm not getting married this young!"

Myung Soo scoffs, "You just told me you're getting married to your dad's business partner's son!"

"We aren't getting married anytime soon!" she justifies. "We'd just be engaged by the end of the year and plan marriage for a few years later."

Myung Soo clucks his tongue impatiently. "Then you've got plenty of time! You made it sound so final! You may change your mind during those few years. There's no need for a break up then!"

"It doesn't work that way," Krystal sighs. She looks at him with the same apologetic look earlier. "If I'm getting engaged with him, I'm going to marry him, Myung Soo. My dad is a man of words. He'd be so mad if I change my mind midway. I wouldn't do that to myself either. It's either him or not at all. And in that case, my dad has to miraculously gain those billions of dollars on his own. That way, we may still have a chance."

Which is highly impossible.

"I'm really sorry," she says again and bows her head down as she leaves.
