Lay Analysis

A Psychological EXO Analysis

Lay is the sweetest, purest, grateful, most humble, most sincere, respectful and grounded guy out of all the members in EXO. It's impossible not to like him, he just has this really bright aura.

Lay is such a kindhearted guy, he is really warm and caring. These qualities are really hard to find in a lot of people. Most humans have big egos and are only interested in things that  benefit them, but that's not the case with Lay. He is really a special guy that just exudes brightness and pureness. All of his actions come from an non-egoistical place, I can tell by his body language that he is a genuine guy. When it comes to his body language there is a lot of shyness that he has yet to overcome, especially when the cameras are focused on him. He sometimes rubs his neck, gets red or looks down at the ground which are all signs of feeling out of his element or just pure shyness. If you haven't noticed yet, Lay is usually a bit forgetful when all eyes are focused entirely on him; this is caused by nervousness. Nervousness comes from a place of fear; fear of screwing up or making a fool out of yourself(or others).  He just wants to give his best to his fans because he is extremely grateful for all the support EXO is receiving. He tries to live up to the fans expectations, without really knowing what type of expectations of him that we have. He always strives for perfection and because of these high expectations that he has made up for himself a lot of pressure comes with it. When you feel pressured, your cognitive skills(attention, language use, memory, perception, problem solving, and thinking) decrease. This is could be the reason to why he sometimes is so forgetful. To get Lay more comfortable at shows/ interviews you have to build up an more playful atmosphere where a sense of comfortability is easily obtained then it would be easier for Lay to let his true colors show because more playful/ non-serious environments often  feel more at home for most people; which allows you to be you easily, without really thinking about it because you feel so comfortable.

Lay has a very humble side to him, surprisingly. A lot of artist usually stop being as humble as soon as they get some attention and fame, but this is not the case with Lay. Lay is extremely respectful and caring towards everyone, not just the fans. He always bows to the staff and the people who are working hard for the sake of EXO. He always tell them '' You've worked hard, thank you'', or something along those lines. I haven't seen the other EXO members being as appreciative as Lay. I'm not saying that the other ones aren't humble, just that Lay shows it very clearly by his actions and kind words. A humble person keeps his accomplishments, gifts, and talents in a proper perspective. He has self-knowledge, and is aware of his limitations as an individual and as a human being. But humble individuals are also oriented towards others, they value the welfare of other people and have the ability to "forget themselves" as well, when appropriate. So in conclusion, humble people are not egoistical at all and truly care about others so much that they can put themselves aside for the welfare of others( hence that the ego is not big at all in these people).  Humility is often in psychology linked with being able to perform better at various things in life. Humble people have better social relationships, they avoid deception in their social interactions, they tend to be forgiving, grateful and cooperative. There are some recent studies that have shown that humility is a consistent predictor of generosity. People who are humble tend to also be more generous with both their time and their money. In addition, gratitude/ being humble fosters happiness, making it easier to cope with stress and trauma. A positive perspective allows you to obtain a better grasp on suffering. “Expressing gratefulness during personal adversity like loss or chronic illness, as hard as that might be, can help you adjust, move on, and perhaps begin anew''.  People who are grateful are more likely to be happier, hopeful and energetic, and they possess positive emotions more frequently. Individuals also tend to be more spiritual or religious, forgiving, empathetic and helpful, while being less depressed, envious or neurotic. I feel like Lay is a '' what you see is what you get'' kind of guy, but of course there is still many sides of him that we haven't seen yet. You might wonder where his gratitude and humble attitude come from. I would say that it's obtained by hardships and struggles that he faced in the past. You can't know or appreciate good in your life if you haven't experienced the bad and ugly. Lay doesn't take anything for granted because he knows how hard it was getting where he is at in life right now. He cherishes everything that makes him happy, and is genuinely glad that he is able to live out his dream. He never complain about how hard and stressful life is as an idol, which is very admirable and really shows how special and diligent he is.

Another thing that I've noticed with Lay is that he exudes innocence; a lot matter of fact. Being innocent actually has a correlation to being naive( believing in people to quickly, giving too many chances etc). I think that Lay knows that some people can be vicious and cunning but he will still give people the benefit of the doubt because his heart is pure enough to give people a chance. People who are this way have encountered prejudice or some kind of discrimination, through this they've learned that you shouldn't judge a book by it's cover because there is more to it than just it's surface( an alternative explanation could be that he is very compassionate too, doesn't believe in being a certain way towards people because it could hurt them). He will get to know the person first and then create his own perception of the person.  He is not an judgmental person, even though all of us judge people from the second we meet them some of us actually give people a chance. Since he's not judgmental, that means that he's also not close minded.

Lay is also very honest in his way of being. I can tell by his actions actually. He has a very delicate body language whenever he does something, especially when he speaks. He is very honest, but tries to put things as nicely as they can be put just to minimize the risks of anyone getting hurt. He is a very caring person, incredibly caring about others emotions. He tries his hardest not to be misunderstood so he tries to watch his words. Another example about how caring he is, is when a member is in tears he is always the first one to console that person. He cares about all the members a lot , if he can help he definitely will. In other words, he is very compassionate. But sometimes the person who tries to make everyone happy is the most lonely person.

He is also a very humorous guy; not consciously trying to be funny but he's funny on a unconscious level. It just happens randomly, he'll just blurt out something that'll make everyone burst out in laughter without really knowing how he did it. He has his own personal charm and just says things so innocently which really gives you a feeling of purity and innocence oozing out of him.

Lay is also a guy who hides his tears and scars. He doesn't want the fans, the members or his family to worry about him. He has hurt him self on multiple occasions onstage, but still he diligently finishes off the performances flawlessly. It's a bit heartbreaking, seeing him faking a smile when he's hurting so bad. As I said before, his grateful and humble side tends to make him put others before himself. Also he is a perfectionist and takes his passion/ job very seriously and a perfectionist always gives his all no matter how rough the circumstances are. His passion about dancing is really no joke. He is very hardworking and always wants to improve, not only for the sake of the fans but for himself too. The desire of being perfect at what you're doing could come from feeling inadequate.  According to psychology people move in the direction that is opposite to the direction they want to avoid the the most. This means that the person who strives for perfection usually does it because he/she is not feeling like he's/she's good enough. He is trying to please everyone and that is hard, it's really not healthy. It could end up causing him a lot of stress and him feeling drained both physically and mentally.  But with that being said ;perfectionism can also drive people to accomplishments and provide the motivation to persevere in the face of discouragement and obstacles so I wouldn't say that it couldn't serve for a greater purpose.

Lay's strengths/ good characteristics are; being humble, honest,sincere, pure, diligent, caring, kind-hearted, unselfish, compassionate, open minded, obedient, calm and also very bright.

Lay's weaknesses/ bad points are; could be to innocent/naive, forgetful, sometimes closed when it comes to deeper emotions and being a bit of a perfectionist when it comes to his profession.

Lay in a relationship;

Lay would be the sweetest guy ever if he were to get an girlfriend. It would take time before you'd  be able to win his heart over. You'd have to first get close to him, get to know the real him. I feel like he doesn't let anyone in so easily, so you'd have to be patient. When you've gotten a grip of who he really is he would make you feel special. He would treat his girlfriend like a princess and give her love like she have never had before.  He would be the caring type; sending her texts and calling in on her,- checking if she's alright.  He would try his hardest in being the best boyfriend to her and he would appreciate her full heartedly. I feel like he would be that type of guy that would make the words '' I love you'' sound so sincere that whenever he would say it it would just make your heart melt,- and he would say it a lot just to show you how much he really cares about you.

Lay has also a very sensitive and romantic side to him. He would write you songs and then have a little mini concert at home for you when he gets time off. He would also be that guy that would surprise you with a delicious home cooked meal once in a while. If he doesn't find time to come home, he'll send you a cute long text or a letter telling you how special and lovely you are. He would do cute, small things that would just make you feel very lucky to have him. He's a giver rather than a taker.

Lay would be very passionate as a boyfriend, just as passionate as he is as a dancer. He would take you very seriously, not play around with your emotions and he would always be your shoulder to lean on. He would never let you carry any burden alone, whatever you're going through- he'll go through it too.

He strikes me as a very filial guy, he'd want a serious girlfriend whom he can settle down with and that will give him all of her undivided attention. If you ever were to get any children, he'd be a great, loving father.

Another thing that I've noticed with Lay is that he is very calm as a person, so you'd never have to worry about him losing his temper. He even mentioned once at an interview that when he gets angry he'll just close his eyes and be silent.  He also strikes me as a guy that acknowledges his own flaws( perfectionists know their flaws) so if he knows he's wrong he wont keep arguing about it, he'd just apologize right away. I think that even if he's not wrong he'd still apologize to you because the fear of losing you scares him.

Lastly I would like to add that Lay would be more of a lover than anything in bed. He'd give you passionate love that satisfies every living fiber in your body. He'd take it slow, listen to you and make you feel comfortable. He'd cuddle you up after it and just let you enjoy the warmth of his skin as he pulls your body closer to his.

In conclusion, if you ever get to be Lay's special someone you should consider yourself very lucky because there are very few like  him in this world. He needs to be treasured because a treasure he is C:
