Leeteuk's Condition

An Angel's Promise To The Sky

“SHE’S my wife?! Are you ing kidding me, JB? I don’t remember getting married either!” Leeteuk said with a high tone on his voice, “If I really married her, I should have remembered that!”

Hyung, you are practically married though. She’s your virtual wife, you see.” Jaebeom said to him, “You and her are doing We Got Married together, don’t you remember?”

“Honestly, I’m getting confused here, JB. Everybody is telling me that Sora is going to be like this and going to be like that but I don’t remember her at all.” Leeteuk informed JB and the others, giving Sora a sullen face,

“I want to know why I remember you all but not her. From all the stories that I heard from you, she seem to be a very important person to me, but…” Leeteuk said, irritated.

“Do you mean you remember everyone except for Sora-ssi?” the doctor asked him and Leeteuk nodded to his physician.

“All of them are surprised when I asked her who she was. I don’t really remember her though.” Leeteuk said,

“You seem to have a case of Selective amnesia, Leeteuk-ssi.” The doctor informed them, “It’s a type of amnesia where you forget certain events in your life.  Did something happen to you prior to the accident?”

“So… Hyukjae was right. I do have amnesia.” Leeteuk uttered loudly, “How long will it take to have my memories of Sora-ssi back?” Leeteuk asked,

“I can’t answer that, Leeteuk. Some can take weeks, months or even years before they can remember everything they had forgotten.” The doctor told him, “It’s best not to push yourself thinking about it. Your memories will come back but we can’t exactly tell when.”

“Is there something we can do to bring my memories back fast? Like going on an operation or taking some medicines." Leeteuk asked,

“I won’t advice you to do that. You might lose all your memories if we operate your brain.” The doctor said, “Amnesias just need some time before you recover back your memories. Some therapies can help you regain them faster but not an operation.” The doctor said and turned to Sora,

“It will be a good help for him to if you tell him some stories about the two of you but don’t push him too hard on remembering those, Sora-ssi.” He said and Sora nodded,

The doctor then left the room after doing some tests on Leeteuk. Jiyeon and Jaebeom went out with him that left Leeteuk and Sora again inside the room,

“Wow! Forgetting some events… I thought that only happens on movies and dramas. I never thought amnesias like this really exsisted.” Leeteuk said while absorbing what the doctor told him. He then turned his head to Sora and smiled sadly,

Mianhe, Sora-ssi but I would like to ask for your help. By being with you, I might recover some of the memories I lost.” He said, “Would you help me?” Leeteuk asked and Sora nodded,

“Ne, oppa. I will but as what the doctor said, don’t push yourself thinking about what you lost.” Sora replied,

“What do you think is the reason why I forgot about you, Sora-ssi? Were we in bad terms before this thing happened to me?” Leeteuk asked,

“Jungsoo oppa, calm yourself down. Just rest for today, arasso? At least we know your real condition now by asking your doctor.” Sora said to him and forced a smile, and then she turned to the table and busied herself on peeling some apple slices for Leeteuk,

“Before I lost my memories, what do I call you? If my sister is telling the truth, I’m sure I don’t just call you by your name formally.” Leeteuk said, still looking at Sora who’s facing her back at him, “Can I call you Sora-ya, Sora-ssi?”

Sora just nodded without looking at Leeteuk to hide her tears falling from her eyes. She covered the half of her face using her fist to lessen the sounds of her sobs, hoping that Leeteuk would not notice her cries.

But she was wrong.

“Sora-ssi, are you crying?” Leeteuk called her and she shook her head in reply but Leeteuk called her again and told her to come closer to his bed,

She immediately wiped her tears and practiced a smile before facing Leeteuk but she was sure that the redness of her eyes and nose are visible, “Oppa, I prepared some apples for you.” She said as she placed down the plate on the side table,

“Sora-ssi, would you mind helping me sit properly? I’ll have some of the apples that you prepared for me.” Leeteuk asked,

When Sora finished positioning Leeteuk’s bed so that he can properly eat, he then pulled Sora close and embraced her tight, “Sora-ssi, mianhe… mianhe… “He whispered on Sora’s ear that made her burst into tears and cry on Leeteuk’s shoulder,

“I don’t feel good to see you cry. It hurts me to see you cry because of me and I don’t know why.”

“Oppa, mianhe.” Sora apologized to Leeteuk and tried to wipe her tears when he stopped her,

Aniyo. I’m the one who’s sorry. I’m the one who forgot about you. If I really do love you, why did I forget about you?” Leeteuk asked unconsciously,

Sora paused for a while before answering Leeteuk and smiled at him, “Let’s not think about that for now, oppa. Have a snack and finish them, I will just get you something to drink.” She said and went out of Leeteuk’s room.

She was in front of the vending machine choosing a drink for Leeteuk when she saw Taeyeon walking towards the hall.

Her left arm has a cast and she also has a big gauze on her forhead, while her right arm is holding on to a IV stand which patients drag whenever they go.

She just nodded to acknowledge Taeyeon’s presence and brought her focus back to the vending machine,

“Sora-ssi...” she heard Taeyeon called and saw her standing right next to her. Sora inquiringly looked at Taeyeon,

“I want to say sorry for what happened. The accident, I’m…” Taeyeon tried to start but can’t find the right words to say,

“You don’t know why you invited Jungsoo oppa to go out with you and drag him to have an accident?” Sora asked Taeyeon without looking at her,

“We were chased by the sasaeng fans and Leeteuk oppa tried to drive away from them. Then we clashed with another van.” She explained to Sora, “That’s what I remember before I passed out.”

“Yes, I had my very own share of sasaeng fans alright. But think about it, Taeyeon eonnie. If you didn’t ask Jungsoo oppa to go out then you won’t be chased by those fans. If you were not chased then this accident will never happen.”

“Are you telling me that this is my entire fault, Sora-ssi?” Taeyeon then asked her,

“Why don’t you think what I told you and answer your own question, eonnie? Was Jungsoo oppa’s accident your fault or not?”

Taeyeon then grinned at her and gave her a mocking look, “I was trying to say sorry to you but it looks like you don’t believe me, Sora-ssi. But you know what? I heard a great news today from Leeteuk’s doctor.” She said that made Sora wide eyed,

“You didn’t…”

“Of course I asked the doctor about Leeteuk’s condition and he told me that he can remember everything except you.” Taeyeon said and smiled at her, “How does it feel not to be remembered by the one you love?”

“Jungsoo oppa will bring his memories back soon!” Sora then said to Taeyeon,

“But why did he forget about you if he really loves you? He even smiled at me when he woke up this morning. Do you know what he called me? Jagiya.”

The Fading of Bright Stars

In the years we shared work spaces, seldom did our hours crossed. She worked night shifts, while I move around across different time zones to meet the demands of my profession. She was a luminary; a survivor of countless excisions when the demands of work is lesser than what is required of human resources. And if not for the months-long infirmity last year, she would have endured the most recent culling. She became part of the statistics, only to return when a colleague flew abroad to get married and live with her fiancé.

A fine lady in her early 30's, one would easily mistake her for an East Asian. Her eyes disappear when she smiles, and her porcelain skin is the envy of many. Her gauntly frame, albeit a cause of concern, hardly bothers any. Colleagues would tell she eats nothing but Chippy and Coke. But who are we to forbid her of such pleasures? She delivers, and for all we care, satisfied are we of her job performance.

Talk is an avocation the two of us hardly engage. Reason lies in office hierarchy, but more so, because we respect each other's solitary leanings. But this doesn't mean ambivalence, or hidden disdain. Words may have never articulated what my thoughts were, but I've always regarded her in high esteem.
