- July 1990

Screams of delighted laughter could be heard at the garden of the Goo household. Mr. Goo and his second wife were standing by the garden gates, staring at their daughters: Goo Hara and Park Gyuri. People had been worried that the two little girls would share a problematic relationship, but in fact it turned out to be the complete opposite - Hara adored her older sister and her new stepmother, in the comfort that she'd get some form of female support and that she now had someone to play dollies with. Gyuri felt the same way towards her stepsister, and loved the way that her stepfather always spoiled her and made her smile. Her mum also looked happy and if she was happy, then there was no more wish in the world for the 4-year-old girl.

"You know, Lee Minsuk of Korea Corporations asked if he could marry Gyuri once his son and she came of age."

Mrs. Goo looked up in surprise. She had not expected this at all, "His son, Joon?"

"Yes. He's the same age as her - they DO make good playmates, I have to admit..."

"So what did you say?"

"I offered Hara instead."

This was a double shock for Mrs. Goo. She had not expected this kind of answer at all. Korea Corporations was one of the biggest manufacturing company in Korea, but realised that she shouldn't have been surprised. Of course. Even if her husband loved her and Gyuri, he would always put his own flesh and blood first.

"Whatever you say darling..."

"Wait, I haven't finished. I know that you're disappointed, but Korea Corporations is on the verge of being pushed back into the league of minor companies. If you've noticed, Gyuri is the stronger of the two. I know she's young, but I can already see the potential in her. It's in her destiny to get far in life. She's a free-spirit, always asking questions and so curious about everything. Haven't you noticed that Hara accepts things as they are?"

A triple hit for Mrs. Goo. She had not expected her husband to be this observant about her daughter. She pressed to hide her pleasure at the highest level of compliment that could be given to her and enjoyed the moment. Then a thought hit her.

Was it REALLY Gyuri's destiny to climb the ladder of life and hit the bell?

"MUMMY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"

Character list

` Goo Hara - born in 1988; step-sister of Gyuri; bright and always smiling - willing to help others 24/7; clumsy; once she falls in love, she'll stay in love even if she gets hurt.

` Park Gyuri - born in 1986; step-sister of Hara; will do anything to get what she wants; grows up to be quite serious; the only male she trusts is her stepfather - and even he had to earn it; has the scars of childhood regarding her real father.

` Yang Seungho - born in 1983; son of the president of the Daehan Company - the biggest business in Asia; being trained to inherit Daehan by his father - even carries out some of the big transactions; a complex character which enables him not trust people easily; rarely smiles.

` Shim Changmin - born in 1985; an intern at Goo Corporations, a company that Hara's father owns; has a bright persona and even though his relationship with Hara begins on turbulently, they become acquaintances.

` Lee Joon - Hara's 'fiance' for a short period of time.

` Mr. Goo - Hara's father; capable of immense love.

` Mrs. Goo - Gyuri's mother; strict but warms up to her new stepdaughter.

` Jung Nicole - Hara's best friend; knows Hara more than she knows herself; the voice of reason in Hara's thinking.
