Connecting the dots (part 2)

Babysitting with the Stars

Woohyun woke up the next morning, leaning over the cold porcelain tub, completely sore. He had spent the whole night locked in the bathroom. Sunggyu had knocked a couple of times, and apologized through the door, but Woohyun refused to move.

He didn’t want an apology from Sunggyu, because Sunggyu didn’t do anything wrong. Sunggyu wasn’t the one who instigated anything.

It was all him. He was the one who kissed Sunggyu. He was the one who Sunggyu’s skin. He was the one who couldn’t control himself.

He forced himself up off the hard tile floor and turned the door knob quietly. He peered into the bedroom to see Sunggyu fast asleep on the edge of the bed. Woohyun wondered if Sunggyu had waited up all night for him, and felt bad. He crept closer and draped a blanket over the dozing hamster.

“I’m sorry hyung…” Woohyun whispered, as he Sunggyu’s hair softly.

“Ahjussi?” Woohyun felt a tug on his shirt and turned to see Hyun Su staring up at him.

“Morning Hyun Su.” Woohyun smiled at the youngster and then put a finger to his lips. “Shhh Gyu appa is sleeping.” Hyun Su nodded obediently and took Woohyun’s hand as they quietly left the bedroom.

They headed for the kitchen, and Woohyun turned to Hyun Su as he put on a red checkered apron.

“Do you want to help me make breakfast Hyun Su?”

Hyun Su’s eyes went wide and he nodded excitedly.

“Ok.” Woohyun grinned. “But go wash your hands first.” Hyun Su raced off to the bathroom to clean his hands, but crashed into Sunggyu who was sleepily wandering out of his bedroom.

“Where’re you running off to?” Sunggyu smiled while sleepily rubbing his eyes.

“To wash my hands!” Hyun Su raised his hands in the air. “To help ahjussi make breakfast!” At that he zoomed past Sunggyu to the bathroom in a determined manner. Sunggyu shook his head and grinned before heading to the kitchen. He spotted Woohyun hovering over the stove.

He bit his lip nervously, as the events of last night came crawling back into his memory. He really had no idea what had come over him…or at least he wished he didn’t. But in reality, he knew exactly why he had let Woohyun do those things to him and why he did those things to Woohyun. He wished he could chalk it all up to having a dry spell in the ladies department, but he knew that wasn’t the case.

Well not completely anyway.

He knew he wasn’t someone who would ever be desperate enough to do something with someone he had no attraction to what so ever. And with Woohyun…well it was definitely a little more than just attraction. He knew that much at least.

But still, he remembered Woohyun’s upsetting reaction, and how he had so hurriedly escaped into the bathroom. Sunggyu figured he was not something Woohyun wanted in that way, and decided that the whole thing was just a mistake and he should just attempt to put it behind him. He mulled over this as he watched Woohyun, turn off the stove. Woohyun didn’t seem to notice him standing there, and took the pot off the stove and turned around, just as Sunggyu took a step forward.

“W-What the—?!” Woohyun gasped and accidentally shoved the piping hot pan right into Sunggyu’s hand. Sunggyu let out a loud yelp and Woohyun immediately dropped the pot in a panic. “Oh my god! Are you ok?!”

“I-I think…” Sunggyu studied his wrist that was red and starting to swell, as he winced in pain.

“No you’re not!” Woohyun’s eyes went wide. “Come here!” He guided Sunggyu over to the sink and ran his wrist under the water.

“I-It kind of hurts…” Sunggyu quivered slightly.

“I’m sorry.” Woohyun frowned, feeling completely at fault. “I-I didn’t see you there and—well that’s not important now. We need to take you to the hospital!”

Sunggyu sighed. “It’s not that bad. I’ll just—.”

“No! We need to take you right now!” Woohyun interrupted. “You keep your wrist under that water! I’ll get Hyun Su!” He told Sunggyu before rushing out of the kitchen.

“But how’re we going to get there?” Sunggyu called after Woohyun, his hand still in the sink.

“We’ll take a taxi!”

++

Sunggyu stared down at his gauze wrapped wrist, as he and Hyun Su sat in the waiting room of the hospital, while they waited for Woohyun to check them in.

“Is Gyu appa hurt?” Hyun Su pouted. “What happened?”

“It just a little burn—.”

“You got burned?!” Hyun Su gasped. “Did you touch a fire appa?!”

“No…it was just an accident.” Sunggyu grinned. “Don’t worry I’ll be ok.”

“But then why are we here?” Hyun Su asked. “Isn’t this where people go when they’re dying?”

Sunggyu leaned in. “If it was up to me, we wouldn’t be here at all. But you know how Woohyun appa is?”

“Is this gross ahjussi’s fault?” Hyun Su blinked.

“No it’s not his fault. It was an accident.” Sunggyu replied, and then thought to himself. “But I’m sure he’s blaming himself for it…”

++

“But are you sure he’s ok doctor?” Woohyun asked for the fifth time.

“Yes…it’s just a small burn.” The doctor sighed. “You know it’s really something that could have been treated at home.”

“See? I told you.” Sunggyu shot Woohyun a tired look before turning to the doctor. “Thanks.”

“Yeah, sure.” The doctor was on the verge of rolling his eyes as he left, clearly annoyed that his valuable time had been wasted.

“Woohyun! Are you ok?!” Dongwoo rushed into the hospital room, after the doctor had left.

“Dongwoo? What’re you doing here?” Woohyun asked.

“You texted me that you were at the hospital so I rushed right over!” Dongwoo exclaimed, his eyes darting to and fro in a frenzied manner. “What happened?”

“It’s not me, its hyung.” Woohyun frowned.

“Oh…are you ok?” Dongwoo asked Sunggyu.

“Yeah, I’m fine.” Sunggyu sighed. “Woohyun was just overreacting.”

“Well that’s good then!” Dongwoo flashed a bright smile, and then turned to Hyun Su. “Ah you must be Hyun Su? Remember we met once?”

Hyun Su nodded shyly.

“I’m Dongwoo appa.” Dongwoo grinned.

“No you’re not!” Woohyun growled, assuming the aura of a protective parent. “Don’t tell him that! You’re not his appa!”

“D-Dongwoo ahjussi?” Hyun Su blinked cutely.

“Aigoo, that’s right~” Dongwoo poked Hyun Su’s belly affectionately, causing the child to giggle shyly.

Woohyun couldn’t help but feel a little betrayed that Hyun Su already seemed to be getting along so well with Dongwoo. He, on the other hand, had to work so hard just to get a ‘gross ahjussi’ out of the kid.

“Oh yeah, I heard that song that you composed with Hoya.” Sunggyu suddenly spoke up.

“Ah really?!” Dongwoo grinned.

“Yeah, I don’t usually listen to hip hop, but it was really good.” Sunggyu smiled.

Woohyun abruptly stood up, garnering the attention of the others.

“I…I’m going to get something to eat.” Woohyun announced, and strode off down the hall.

++

Woohyun angrily kicked the vending machine that had eaten up his money and refused to give him the unhealthy snack he was so craving. He sighed and tapped his head against the machine repeatedly.

He knew Dongwoo was like that with everyone. Everyone loved Dongwoo. That was pretty much a fact. And really he didn’t do anything wrong, but Woohyun hated it.

The fact that Sunggyu could talk about stuff that happened in their jobs with Dongwoo happily. It made Woohyun feel left out, and frustrated as he was reminded once again that he had nothing to his own so called career.

He wanted Sunggyu to be happy and proud of him…to compliment him on some amazing performance or award. He wanted Sunggyu to be happy with him. He wanted Sunggyu to be happy. He wanted Sunggyu.

It was as plain and simple as that, and it was something that he knew deep inside his heart from the beginning.

It was a few years ago, during summer when Woohyun first stumbled across Kim Sunggyu. It wasn’t by choice though, as his then girlfriend was a huge fan back when Sunggyu was nothing more than an aspiring local rocker performing in small clubs and bars.

“C’mon already!” Woohyun’s girlfriend shrieked as she pulled on his arm, dragging him into a dark dingy club.

“Noona…do we really have to see this…Kim Sungpoo person?” Woohyun whined childishly.

“It’s not Sungpoo! It’s Sunggyu!” She hissed. “And he’s amazing and hot and—!”

“Yeah, yeah…” Woohyun pouted, obviously jealous. He didn’t see what the big deal was. To Woohyun, this Kim Sunggyu person sounded like just another pretty boy with way too much makeup, strumming a few chords and whipping his hair back and forth so he can garner a few squeals from the girls.

“OMG it’s gonna start!” Woohyun’s girlfriend squealed, and raced to the front of the small club right in front of the stage where a few other girls were anticipating Sunggyu’s performance. They were the only ones though, as no one else seemed to be paying the stage any attention at all, and were busy chatting away and drinking. Woohyun rolled his eyes and scoffed, just as the lights dimmed and the stage lit up.

There Kim Sunggyu stood with his band, donning a simple black t-shirt and jeans. He wasn’t ugly, but he was no pretty boy either.

To say the performance was good….would be a lie.

The sound system kept getting messed up, and the lights were constantly flashing on and off, threatening to give some people seizures. Sunggyu’s voice was a little on the squeaky side and he definitely went off key a couple of times. And Woohyun couldn’t understand a damn thing Sunggyu was singing, so he figured it was an English song.

But one thing did stick with him about the performance. The way Sunggyu sang, like it was the last song he would ever sing. The way he put his whole heart into singing those English lyrics, made Woohyun feel like he could understand the meaning of the song.

He didn’t realize he hadn’t taken his eyes off Sunggyu until the song ended and Sunggyu bowed. The few girls in the front row clapped enthusiastically, but no one else in the bar seemed to be paying attention. Woohyun felt himself get a little irritated that those dumb people couldn’t recognize the passion that Sunggyu had sung with.

That night he lay in bed, thinking about the boy who sang with such enthusiasm and couldn’t help but feel like he could relate. As he himself, was struggling with his own pursuit of an acting career.

The next morning he got on his computer and typed Kim Sunggyu into the search bar. A few hours later he had gone through all Sunggyu’s cover performances that were uploaded onto youtube.

And that’s when it all started.

At first his girlfriend was ecstatic that Woohyun had become Sunggyu’s fan, but after a while, all he would talk about was Sunggyu. And every girl that came after that, was either a one night stand or if they bothered to stick around for longer would leave soon enough after they realized they had to share Woohyun’s heart with Sunggyu.

But Woohyun wasn’t too bothered by it. Every night he smiled at his copy of Sunggyu’s acoustic covers CD and whispered to it.

“Lets both keep trying to make our dreams come true.”

The day Sunggyu got signed to a record label, Woohyun celebrated by making a huge array of snack foods, and sending it to Sunggyu’s house.

When Sunggyu got his first number one single, Woohyun sat at his computer, listening to the song over and over again.

When Sunggyu won his first music award, Woohyun was sitting on the couch watching the ceremony, tears running down his cheeks.

He was just a really dedicated fan, nothing more, nothing less.

But then he met Sunggyu, and he just had to be so nice and amazing, and Woohyun didn’t know how he couldn’t fall for him.

The person who’s smile was like a light for him when it was dark. The person who’s voice gave him the strength to go on whenever he failed. The person who’s never ending commitment and passion inspired him to keep on pursuing his own dreams. That same person was even better in real life, if that was even possible.

Woohyun sunk to the floor, leaning against the vending machine, not knowing what to do. He was in love with Sunggyu. He knew that much. But he had no idea what he could do about it. Probably nothing, he figured.

It wasn’t like they could date, what with them both being men and living in a less than open minded society. He didn’t want Sunggyu’s reputation to get worse because of him. Plus he didn’t even know if Sunggyu felt the same way.

He got up and kicked the vending machine once more if only to vent out his frustration, and a bag of chips fell from the slot. His expression brightened in an instant as he grabbed for the chips and began stuffing them in his mouth throwing any trace of his long forgotten diet to the wind.

“Hey…” Woohyun looked up to see Sunggyu awkwardly approaching him.

“Oh…hey.” Woohyun mumbled, digging around in his bag of chips. “W-Where’s Hyun Su?”

“He’s with Dongwoo.”

“Oh…” Woohyun nodded. “How’s your wrist?”

“It doesn’t hurt that much anymore.”

“That’s good…”

They stood there in an awkward silence for a moment.

“Um…I-I’m sorry.”

“Huh?” Woohyun blinked.

“A-About what happened last night…” Sunggyu pulled at his sleeve uncomfortably. “I-I shouldn’t have…uh forced you to—.”

“No!” Woohyun shook his head immediately. “You didn’t force me to do anything. I was the one who—.”

“But you were upset!” Sunggyu frowned. “It’s my fault. I-I made you cry—.”

“I-It wasn’t because of that!” Woohyun took a step forward, and then hesitated. “I…” He paused when two nurses passed them by, while shyly stealing glances at Sunggyu and giggling. Woohyun sighed. “I-It’s not your fault.”

“But—.”

“Don’t worry about it ok?” Woohyun smiled sadly, as he tossed the chips bag in the nearby trash bin.

Sunggyu pouted. “How am I not supposed to worry about it? When you’re making that face and—.”

“S-Should we just forget it ever happened?” Woohyun suggested, swallowing down the lump in his throat, as he kept his eyes on the floor.

“What…?” Sunggyu shook his head. “How am I supposed to do that?” Woohyun looked up after hearing the slight anger in Sunggyu’s voice. “I don’t even know what the hell is going on here…with us…but it’s weird and uncomfortable and I can’t just ignore it.”

Woohyun bit his lip and scanned the area for a second before grabbing onto Sunggyu’s arm.

“Hey, what’re you doing?” Sunggyu asked as Woohyun dragged him down the hallway. “Where’re you taking me?!”

Woohyun remained silent as he pulled Sunggyu up the stairs. They made it all the way up to the rooftop of the building. Woohyun shut the door behind him and let out a big sigh. “Nam Woohyun! You better tell me what the fu—.”

“There’ll be no point in me saying this. I know it won’t do anything…but I still feel like I have to say it.” Woohyun interrupted, expression serious, ignoring the cold wind nipping at his skin.

“Huh?” Sunggyu frowned. “What’re you—?”

“I…I like you hyung.”

“Uh…ok?” Sunggyu blinked. “That’s great, but it’s cold and I—.”

“No!” Woohyun grabbed onto Sunggyu’s arms, with a look of desperation, and then quickly let go. “Not like that…I mean I…” Woohyun pursed his lips as his gaze met the floor. “I-I’m sorry hyung…I don’t want to mess up anything for you. I know how those stupid reporters are and I don’t want you to get hurt anymore so I’ll just toss these feelings aside. It may take me a while, but I’ll try as hard as I can to—.”

“W-Wait…” Sunggyu interrupted, realization finally dawning on him. “Y-You…” He met Woohyun’s troubled gaze.

“I’m sorry…” Woohyun’s voice was shaky and quiet, as if he was ashamed of himself.

“I…” Sunggyu suddenly spoke up, causing Woohyun to look up. “I don’t know what I’m supposed to do about this.”

“You don’t have to do anything.” Woohyun sighed, already letting go of the tiniest hope that Sunggyu would return his feelings. “I just wanted you to know the reason why I did what I did last night...but I won’t do it again. I’ll even sleep on the couch ok? So please don’t—.”

“Why are you making this so hard for me?” Sunggyu grumbled, running a hand through his hair, clearly frustrated. “W-Why are you acting like you’re the only one who…”

“Huh?” Woohyun blinked. “I don’t understand—.”

“H-Haven’t you noticed anything?” Sunggyu frowned.

“Noticed…what?”

“You’re a man, a-and yet I still…” Sunggyu bit his lip, as a slight blush crept onto his cheeks.

“Still what?” Woohyun tilted his head.

“W-Why are you so damn stupid?” Sunggyu gripped onto Woohyun’s shoulders. “I keep trying to kiss you and touch you all the time, and l-last night…d-don’t you even remember what happened?”

“O-Of course I remember!” Woohyun exclaimed. “But that doesn’t mean—!”

“I honestly wanted to forget this whole thing ever happened.” Sunggyu admitted. “But I can’t…because every time I look at you, and when you have that stupid smile on your face, I-I just want to…” Sunggyu covered his mouth and looked away. “Ugh this is so messed up...I don’t know what’s wrong with me. Its like you turned me into a ert.”

Heat colored Woohyun’s cheeks, and his heart sped up at Sunggyu’s words. He his lips nervously as he gazed into the older man’s smaller eyes.

“Hyung…do you—?”

“A-Are you seriously still asking me that?” Sunggyu groaned. “After what I just said…”

Woohyun blushed. “B-But…what should we—?”

“We’ll have to keep it a secret.” Sunggyu decided. “I don’t want to hide it…but I don’t think we’ll have much of a choice if we want to keep our careers.”

“B-But we can’t…” Woohyun mumbled. “It’s not like anything can come of this...”

“Why not?”

“B-Because…” Woohyun looked down. “We’re both men…if someone finds out, your reputation will just get worse hyung. Everyone will call you disgusting and—.”

“Do you think I’m disgusting?” Sunggyu interrupted.

“Huh? What? No! Never!”

Sunggyu smiled. “…Then its fine.”

“B-But…are you really sure?” Woohyun questioned. “Hyung I don’t think—.”

“You talk way too much.” Sunggyu rolled his eyes.

Woohyun pouted. “I just don’t think this is a good idea…”

“Fine.” Sunggyu shrugged. “We won’t date then. I’ll just meet a nice girl and—.”

“No!” Woohyun gasped, grabbing onto Sunggyu’s arm possessively. “I don’t want anyone else to have you!”

“Well then I guess you’ll have to be my…uh what am I supposed to refer to you as?”

“B-Boyfriend?” Woohyun suggested, and then covered his face from embarrassment.

“W-Well it doesn’t matter…” Sunggyu smiled slightly, as he patted Woohyun’s head. “Ah I guess we should head back. I left Hyun Su with Dongwoo, so who knows what they’re doing—.”

“Wait.” Woohyun pulled Sunggyu towards him.

“What now…?” Sunggyu grumbled. “You have to stop worry—.” He was cut off by Woohyun’s lips on his.

“There now we can go.” Woohyun smiled, content with Sunggyu’s surprised look.

“No we can’t.” Sunggyu muttered, before pulling Woohyun in for another kiss.

W-Wait hyung…” Woohyun whispered, as Sunggyu pressed him hard against the door. “W-What if someone sees us?”

“We’re on the roof.” Sunggyu replied softly, as he caressed Woohyun’s cheek. “No one’s going to see us.”

Woohyun seemed to find some comfort in those words, and hesitantly slid his hands around Sunggyu’s waist, pulling him closer. Their lips collided once again, but this time it was more hasty and desperate. Woohyun roughly pulled on Sunggyu’s shirt to close any distance between them. Sunggyu cupped Woohyun’s cheek, while his other hand daringly slipped under Woohyun’s shirt.

“Hyung….” Woohyun whimpered, at the touch of Sunggyu’s cold fingers on his bare skin. “I-Its cold…”

“Should I warm you up Hyunnie?” Sunggyu breathed in his ear, causing Woohyun’s cheeks to redden.

They were interrupted, when Woohyun’s phone started ringing. “I-It’s probably Dongwoo, wondering where we are….”

“Just ignore it…” Sunggyu frowned, as he felt Woohyun’s hands slip away from his waist.

“I can’t hyung.” Woohyun chuckled. “What about Hyun Su?”

“Fine.” Sunggyu grumpily folded his arms, as he watched Woohyun answer his phone.

“Hello? Dongwoo? Yeah…we’re coming now. We’ll be there in five minutes. Ok, bye.” Woohyun hung up and turned to Sunggyu. “Dongwoo’s waiting for us.”

“Let’s go then…” Sunggyu sighed, as he opened the door and headed for the stair case. But then he felt Woohyun’s fingers graze his palm. He smiled to himself and gripped on tightly to Woohyun’s hand as they made their way down the stairs hand-in-hand.
