“I refuse. Why do you insist that I marry the princess of Athens?” Jaejoong hissed.

“Son, think of our people! Think of Athens! Do you not wish for our kingdom to be in peace? Do you wish to see more people die?”

Jaejoong knew that the king of Crete had much more power and influence, as well as double the men the kingdom of Athens had. The kingdom of Crete could easily conquer them. The ageing king gazed into his son’s eyes, hoping to see a minuscule of compliance- but could only find defiance. He knew that his son was stubborn.

“Can you not ask another prince?” Jaejoong tried. “Most of them are still unmarried.”

“The princess had specifically requested for you. She was completely smitten after seeing you at the ball, and had insisted on marrying only you.”

Jaejoong sighed and closed his eyes. “Do allow me some time to ponder over this. Marriage, after all, is a big decision. I will have an answer by the end of the week.”

“Very well. Keep in mind that the fate of Athens lie in your choice,” the king stood up tiredly and patted Jaejoong on his back and retired to his room.
