Find Your Way [Epilogue Coming Soon]“Hyukjae.” I heard a woman’s voice over the phone after I’d answered it. “It’s me, Dr. Park, how are you feeling?”
Why is she calling me?
“Oh, hi.” I said. “I’m fine, thankyou.”
“That’s good.” She said, in her usual chirpy voice. “I was just calling regarding coming down to the hospital for a check up. It’ll just be some routine tests, just to make sure you’re doing well.”
“Oh, okay.” I said. “I guess that’s probably a good idea. What time should I schedule an appointment with you?”
“Unfortunately, I’m in Seoul for a few weeks.” She began. “You see, we just got another batch of fresh interns over there, and they’re short staffed.”
“Then, what should I do?” I asked.
“I was going to suggest you see the on-call doctor.” Dr. Park continued. “She’s actually a paediatrician, but she’s perfectly qualified to do routine check ups. I’ve worked with her before, so I know you’ll be in good hands.”
I was a little disappointed I wouldn’t be able to see Dr. Park again to properly thank her for helping me recover from my fever, but I guess the on-call doctor would have to do.
“So Hyukjae, I’ve scheduled you in for an appointment this Thursday at eleven,” She said. “Do you think you can make it?”
“Sure.” I smiled. “Thankyou Dr. Park.”
Silence hung over the line.
“Hyukjae, can I ask you something,” She said. “Not as a doctor, but just because I’m curious myself…”
“Yeah?” I assumed it wouldn’t be anything too personal.
“Are you and Donghae, sort of…” She took a breath. “Like, a thing?”
I felt a smile inch over my face.
“Yes, he’s officially my boyfriend.” I replied.
I heard a soft squeal of excitement.
“Hyukjae, that’s great!” Dr. Park said. “Congratulations, and sorry for such a nosy question.”
“Thankyou, and don’t worry about it.” I said.
“Bye.” She sang, cutting the line.
She is by far the weirdest doctor I have ever met.
So Donghae decided to accompany me to the hospital for my check-up. After checking in at the front desk, Donghae and I took a seat. He grabbed my hand and held it in his.
“Lee Hyukjae?” A woman with long brown hair stood in the door way, holding a folder to her chest.
I stood up and Donghae followed me into the room.
“Hello Hyukjae.” She smiled sweetly. “My name is Dr. Sandara Park. I’m the paediatrician here.”
I nodded, squeezing Donghae’s hand in mine. He shoved his other into his pocket, staring at the ground.
“So, you’re here for a routine check up, correct?” She asked, taking a seat at the desk and pulling up a page on the computer.
“That’s right.” I confirmed. She took a confused look at Donghae. “Oh, this is my boyfriend Donghae.”
“Nice to meet you.” She bowed.
Donghae gave her a smile which quickly dropped.
Why is he being so weird?
“Okay, Hyukjae.” She said. “I’d like to start off by taking your blood pressure. Can you please take off your shirt, and sit on the examination table?”
I moved my arms to pull off my T-shirt, when something stopped me.
Donghae’s grip on my hand tightened.
That’s odd, normally he’s trying to get me out of my shirt.
“Donghae.” I said sweetly. “I need my hand.”
“Oh, right.” Donghae hesitantly dropped my hand, as if he hadn’t noticed.
I pulled my shirt over my head and lifted myself up on the table, while the other Dr. Park withdrew a small machine from one of the drawers.
I stiffened at the cold feel of her hand around the top of my arms (I would say biceps, but because of the lack of muscle tone, I don’t think it would be accurate). She fastened the strap around my arm, asking me if it was too tight, to which I responded with ‘no’.
She started the machine, which filled the band with air, pressing tight on my arm.
I couldn’t help but notice that her hand lingered on my arm while she checked the reading.
Donghae cleared his throat loudly, catching my attention and sending me a look. A look which I’d never seen before. It was as though he was warning me of-.
Oh my god he’s jealous!
I suppressed a smile as Dr. Park took the machine off my arm.
“Okay, you have a slightly lower than average blood pressure, but that’s nothing to worry about.” She said.
I couldn’t help but glance at Donghae, who practically glared holes in the back of Dr. Parks head.
Wow. He is so adorable.
“Okay now Hyukjae,” She said, taking a small flashlight from her pocket. “I need to take a look in your mouth. Can you open wide for me and stick out your tongue?” By the tone she used I could tell she was used to doing these kinds of check ups on kids, not adults.
I stuck out my tongue, opening my mouth as wide as it would go. I suddenly realised how derpy I probably looked at that moment.
Dr. Park leaned over to the table, and gently grabbed my jaw, and shone the light inside my mouth. Her face drew closer as she continued to examine. I moved my eyes over to Donghae, and sure enough; he was clenching his fists at the sight of her hand on my chin.
He should know better than to be so childish.
Then, I felt a weight pressed down onto my thigh.
This can’t be good.
Dr. Park had her hand at the top of my thigh, gripping it for support as she stood on her toes to examine me.
“Whoa whoa whoa!” Donghae said, waving his hands. “That’s it! Watch your hands woman!”
She took the light away, turning to him in confusion.
“Donghae!” I said, trying not to embarrass Dr. Park.
She looked down at her hand, quickly bringing it away.
“Sorry!” She said. “I honestly didn’t realise.”
Well, you should have realised you were accidentally groping my thigh when my extremely over protective boyfriend is standing right there!
Donghae shot her a nasty glare, retreating back into his corner where he watched the two of us like a hawk.
I mumbled sorry to her.
Jealous Hae, is a y Hae. I concluded.
Then, all hell broke loose.
“Because you’re an asthmatic, I’m going to need to check your breathing.” She said, taking the stethoscope from around her neck. She slowly placed her hand on the side of my chest. I could visibly see Donghae grinding his teeth.
Damn, why didn’t I know he’d be like this?! Think Hyukjae! You shouldn’t have brought him!
I did feel sorry for Dongh
