Never Let Me Go

I knew Jongin was already confused when we took the bus. But he didn’t say anything, he just kept following my lead. When we walked past a café where most students spend time to do home works and other school related tasks, though, he stopped walking and grabbed arm gently. “Where are we going exactly?” he asked, his brows creased.

“I thought you’d never ask.” I said, grinning at him. “Over there.” I told him, pointing my finger across the street.

“The theater?” Jongin said, obviously bewildered. Then, he turned to me, his expression changed promptly. “You know, if you wanted to go on a date, you should’ve just ask.” he cocked his head to the side, smirking at me teasingly.

“Don’t flatter yourself, mister.” I scoffed at him playfully. “We’re only here to watch a movie. A comedy movie, to be specific.” I clarified and then I started to walk across the street.

“Wait,” Jongin said, running after me. “I thought we’re going to study?” he asked as we joined the short line of queue.

“Yes, we are.” I said. I fixed my eyes on the wall where the posters of current movies being shown were plastered. “In fact, we’re doing one of the studying strategies I’ve learned.” when he didn’t say anything, I turned to look at him. He looked a bit tentative but his eyes were fixed on me. “Just trust me on this, okay?” I said to him.

Jongin gave me a lingering look. “Fine.” he sighed and then he fixed the strap of his backpack and looked over the ticket booth as we approach it. “Watching a comedy movie as part of the studying strategy?” he wondered out loud as I claim our tickets from the booth. “I think I could get used to this.”

We both laughed and went inside the theater.

------

The movie had already ended a couple of minutes ago but Jongin and I are still laughing out loud. We’re walking down the sidewalk and reminisce the hilarious scenes from the movie we just watched.

“But I still don’t get what we’re doing.” Jongin stated after a moment. He peered into my eyes and raised his brows, waiting for my response.

I glanced at my wrist watch, the sun was already starting to set and the streets are starting to get a little crowded. “What’s your favorite food?” I asked, turning my gaze at him.

Jongin looked surprised with my question. “My favorite food?” he echoed, knitting his brows. I could tell he’s getting a little impatient with me. He looked cute when he’s getting impatient, I noted. He sighed deeply and said. “Anything.”

“That’s not valid.” I said to him, pursing my lips and crossing my arms in chest.

“Hana.” Jongin groaned, his ears turning pink in annoyance. I had to bit my tongue to refrain myself from laughing. “This is not funny anymore. Just tell me what’s going on.” his tone was serious now, but I don’t have any plan on budging. Besides, what I’m doing right now is for him.

I maintain my dominant stance and held up my chin. “First of all, I’m not trying to be funny.” I stated. “Whatever we’re doing right now makes a lot of sense, trust me. Now, just tell me your favorite food. I promise I’ll tell you what’s going on after you ate that certain food you like.”

“But what does my favorite food had to do with my make up test?”

“Everything.” I said to him as firmly as I could.

Jongin cocked his head to side, studying me, and I tried not to get self-conscious. “Well, there’s this food at our cafeteria. It’s a snack, actually.” he told me the name of this snack he’s obsessed with.

“But we can’t go back to school.” I said.

“No.” he said. “But the convenience store near our school sells some of them.” he informed me with a grin on his face. It was pretty obvious from his expression that he’s getting excited, he must really like this snack then.

“Okay.” I said, “Then, let’s go to the bus stop.”

One bus ride later, we arrived at the familiar convenience store near our school's parking lot. There were a few students from our school hanging out there, some of them gawked at us curiously when we came in and then they started whispering to each other. Jongin, clearly unmindful of the stares and whispers of our schoolmates, steered me eagerly towards the stall of the snack he was saying.

It was some sort of a big marshmallow covered with a frozen chocolate syrup, like mallows, he explained to me. He was grinning like a ten year old as he admire the snack on his hand. When I told him that I haven’t eaten any of it before he shot me a disbelieving look, as though I did a dreadful,
