The Boy Next Door (Discontinued)

It was currently after school and by this time all students were to leave the premises of the school, except for two certain classes.

Mrs. Cho and Mr. Park’s Language classes were currently in theater with the drama club. The two classes were seated in the chairs in front of the stage, while the production team was up on stage. An older lady, maybe in her mid- fifties, stood in front of the team, closer to the edge of the stage. She clapped her hands together and spoke in a loud voice, “Okay! Students from Mrs. Cho and Mr. Park as you guys have heard today we are rehearsing for the play Romeo & Juliet, ooh isn’t that exciting?”

Some students clapped their hands and cheered, while the rest only clapped slowly not enjoying this whatsoever.

“Well, I’m pretty sure your teachers has inform you on your roles for the play, so can I have Romeo and Juliet raise their hands?”

Chunji and Eunhee refused to lift a finger and remained still. Some people from the other classes started to glance around to see who will be playing the forbidden star-crossed lovers, while the people in the same class as Chunji and Eunhee just stared at them.

Nicole started at the two and narrowed her brows. She understood why they didn’t want to do the play, mainly the fact they were playing Romeo and Juliet, but she didn’t understand why they have to be so uncooperative.

                “Umm, Romeo and Juliet?”

Mrs. Cho stood up from her seat and stared into the crowd of students sitting down, “Lee Chanhee and Kwon Eunhee raise your hand this instant.” Her voice was stern and it showed authority. Whoever were to go up against that would be crazy, and Chunji and Eunhee knew that.

So they reluctantly raised their hands in the air the same time the head director of the production team gazed over them. She smiled and clasped her hands together. “Wonderful!”

The director ushered some people around on the stage while everyone that was sitting down were looking at Chunji and Eunhee. Eunhee honestly didn’t like the attention she was getting so she slid down her seat, trying to avoid the looks she was getting from her peers.

L.Joe was beside her on her right and was looking at her weirdly. “What’s wrong?” Eunhee looked up at him and made a face. “I don’t the attention I’m getting. We haven’t even started rehearsing and people are already looking at me like I’m going to do something amazing.”

L.Joe couldn’t be much of any help, but the only thing he could really do was give her a comforting smile, squeezing her right shoulder.

If the looks that Eunhee was getting was bad the fact that a couple of seats down a head turned to her and Eunhee couldn’t help but frown at who she saw.

Hyemi stared at Eunhee with a smirk, “You’re Juliet? Wow, what did you do to get the role?”

Eunhee glared at Hyemi, “I didn’t do anything, they just gave me the role.”

Hyemi scoffed, “I’m pretty sure they wouldn’t give a role like Juliet to someone that has no talent in acting,” Hyemi gazed her eyes towards Eunhee and looked her up and down, “like someone like you.”

For some reason Eunhee felt like a million daggers were stabbed through her heart at the words Hyemi had said. Eunhee had no reason to feel this way. She obviously doesn’t have the talents for acting, so why the heck did it hurt when Hyemi said that someone like her won’t be able to play Juliet?

Eunhee was about to tell her off when Nicole beat to it. “At least she got a role in the play. And what about you, huh?” Nicole asked feign innocence. That made Hyemi speechless and Nicole couldn’t help but smirk, completely changing out of her sweet girl look. “I’m pretty sure hearing that you don’t have a role in the play but part of the scene changes.”

Chunji, Eunhee and L.Joe looked at Nicole with surprised looks on their faces. Eunhee and L.Joe were surprised on Nicole’s sudden change of attitude, but for Chunji he felt his growing love for Nicole was increasing  after seeing another side of her that he never witness before.

“So don’t go telling people off when you’re not even in the play.” Nicole glared at the girl. “Especially when there my best friend.”

Hyemi scoffed and got up to seat somewhere far away from them as possible. As she was far away from the four, the other three turned to Nicole with wide eyes.

“What the heck was that?” L.Joe asked.

“I’m just defending my best friend. How can she just judge someone without even seeing if they’re good enough?”

“That’s sweet and all, I mean really sweet, but maybe she’s right. I don’t have any experiences in acting and I’m just going to make a feel out of myself when we do perform this live.”

Nicole looked at Eunhee and frowned. She was about to say something to her, but was cut off when the director spoke up.

“Okay, everyone, I want all of you to head to your places. Lighting people will go up to the sound/light room, people that are currently working with the coordinators and the scenes, just stay in the chairs for now and act as the audience. And I need my characters up on stage now!”

Everyone, excluding those who were on coordinating and scenes duty, all went to their respected areas. Eunhee gave Nicole a small smile before going up to the stage, Chunji passed by Nicole and gave her a smile too, but it didn’t reach his eyes. Nicole gave him a smile, the smile also not reaching the eyes. L.Joe stood up and passed by Eunhee, who was going towards the stage, he gave her shoulder a squeeze and Eunhee turned to face him.

                “Good luck?”

Eunhee smiled at his slight uncertainty. She let a whispered thank you before turning around. L.Joe sighed and patted Chunji’s back when he passed him and headed to the back to the sound/lighting room.

Both Chunji and Eunhee were off to the side of the stage listening to the director. They both had their scripts in their hands and tension between them was, not gonna lie, really awkward. They neither didn’t look nor talk to each other, feeling way too embarrassed with themselves. Because:

  1. Eunhee feels like complete crap knowing that she has to kiss this guy- I mean lip on lip, there was going to be some lip action in this play because apparently Shakespeare thought it was perfect to add a kissing scene as well with a scene… I mean there is no way in hell the school is going to add that in, but nevertheless people are still going to implied they did the do… God Eunhee really hates herself.

  1. Chunji just can’t get Nicole out of his head. Of course the girl doesn’t even know that the boy loves her (oh Chunji you lovesick puppy) and Chunji doesn’t even know that Nicole loves him, so basically everyone feels like crap. Not to offend Eunhee or anything, but Chunji just didn’t like Eunhee- well he does, but not in that way. Eunhee’s an awesome girl, but she’s just not… Nicole.

And Chunji is forever helplessly in love with Nicole.

Eunhee frowned and Chunji witness the frown. He knows that Eunhee must be feeling bad as well, so he shouldn’t feel like this is all about him, so he nudge his elbow in her side and Eunhee flinched and turned to him.

Eunhee raised her eyebrow at him, questioning him. Chunji gave her a small smile, “I forgot to congratulate you on getting the role of Juliet.”

Eunhee didn’t reply back but when she did she said, “You don’t mean that.”  Chunji was taken back at what she said.

                “… I do, I just- I mean-“

“I’m not Nicole.” Eunhee said, giving him a small smile. “It’s fine, really, I really don’t want to do this either.”

Chunji frowned at Eunhee and was about to assure her that he did mean it but the director started talking.

“Okay before the play really starts I will be off to the side saying the prologue and right after the prologue our Sampson and Gregory will come in. Everyone got it?”

Everyone nodded their heads as the director started off the prologue of the play.

“Two households, both alike in dignity…”

After Act I Scene I, the director decided to go up to the scene where Romeo and Juliet, in other words when they have their first kiss.

Chunji and Eunhee were standing in front of each other with their scripts in their hands, the script opened to the page of their lines.

Eunhee took a glance out in the audience and saw a glimpse of Nicole. Nicole gave Eunhee a smile that didn’t reach up to her eyes. Eunhee knew Nicole must be feeling crushed, seeing her current crush on the stage with a girl, and that girl being her best friend.

L.Joe was feeling the same, but with Eunhee. L.Joe still doesn’t know if his feelings for Eunhee was strong like Chunji’s was for Nicole, but all he knew was that Eunhee and Chunji together on that stage was not doing it for him.

“Okay, Chunji your first line towards Eunhee will be ‘If I profane’ okay?”

Chunji slowly nodded his head and looked at Eunhee, who stared back with wide eyes, he cleared his throat.

If I profane with my-

“No, Chunji,” The director cut him, she heaved a sigh and place a hand on his shoulder. “I need you to be more… more in love. This is Romeo we’re talking about here, he fell in love with Juliet at first sight, so I need you to look at your Juliet and convince her you are in love with her.”

Eunhee’s face literally screamed danger. Every part of her was not enjoying this and she feels like she’s going to break down. And Chunji could see that. “Umm maybe we can take a-“Chunji stopped mid-sentence when he saw the look the director was giving him. “Uh never mind.”

“Okay!” The director sported a huge smile on her face and clapped her hands together. “Now, let’s start again, and remember Chunji, be in love.” Chunji gave her an awkward smile and slight nod and looked at Eunhee again.

“I’m sorry.” He whispered to her and Eunhee could only give him a slight smile, which really wasn’t a smile, it was only a slight upwards. Chunji took a deep breath.

If I profane with my unworthiest hand
This holy shrine, the gentle fine is this:
My lips, two blushing pilgrims, ready stand
To smooth that rough touch with a tender kiss.

--------

Nicole bit her bottom lip with so much force that she could taste the iron from her blood. She really didn’t want to feel like a total , but she really couldn’t help it. If Eunhee lay her freaking lips on Chunji, someone is going to die in her hands.

----------

Eunhee froze. She opened to say her lines but nothing came out. Chunji looked at her, “To smooth that rough touch with a tender kiss.

Eunhee didn’t say anything but stared at Chunji.

“Cut!” The director came towards the both of them, but she only stared at Eunhee. “Eunhee, sweetie, what’s wrong?”

                “Nothing’s wrong,” Eunhee mumbled.

“Oh no, but there is. What’s wrong, Eunhee?”

Eunhee sighed, “I just think you got the wrong girl to play Juliet.”

The director looked at Eunhee, “What?”

“I think you have the wrong person for Juliet.”

The director sighed and took Eunhee to the side to have a one-on-one conversation while everyone looked on curiously. “Do you know why your teacher picked you as Juliet?” Eunhee shook her head. “It’s because she sees potential in you.”

“That’s the thing I don’t have any potential in acting, I’ve never really experienced acting before.”

“That’s okay,” The director reassured. “Do you think these people have any experience? All that matters is what you want it to be. I mean your teacher may be wrong and picked the wrong girl to play Juliet, but I don’t want to think that. I see something in you Eunhee, you just got to believe in it.” The director smiled at Eunhee and walked her to Chunji. “Okay one more time and this time to keep going to the kiss, okay? Okay!” The director looked at Chunji, “Just repeat the last line.”

To smooth that rough touch with a tender kiss.”

Eunhee sighed and looked at Chunji. In the corner of her eyes she saw the director smiling at her, and she knew everyone is waiting. So she closed her eyes.

Good pilgrim, you do wrong your hand too much,
Which mannerly devotion shows in this;
For saints have hands that pilgrims’ hands do touch,
And palm to palm is holy palmers’ kiss.”

Sometime during the line, Eunhee opened her eyes and reached for Chunji’s hand, placing it palm to palm with hers. She was quite shock at what she had done. She didn’t really stumble on her words, Chunji did, only a little bit, but it really wasn’t noticeable.

She saw the director giving her the thumbs up. Not only that, Eunhee gave Chunji quite a shock. He was so shock that he didn’t say his line, so Eunhee had to push him slightly with her palm. Chunji snapped out of it.

Have not saints lips, and holy palmers too?”

Ay, pilgrim, lips that they must use in prayer.”

“O, then, dear saint, let lips do what hands do;
They pray, grant thou, lest faith turn to despair.”

Chunji motion his head towards the palms that were still together, he slightly moved towards Eunhee as she said the next line.

Saints do not move, though grant for prayers’ sake.”

“Then move not, while prayer’s effect I take.
Thus from my lips, by yours, my sin is purged.”

And with that Chunji slowly leaned his head forward his lips just barely touching Eunhee’s.

I'm sorry for not updating, I totally forgot to be quite honest with you. But I'm back with a very long chapter. Like seven pages long! Anyways this was a start with play rehearsal and things got complicated. I'm sorry if it didn't make sense I one point, I tried really, but I got tired and just basically gave up to make it good, so I went with the flow. But I do hope you like it! The next update won't take as long, I promise! ^^
