There’s this boy that comes around every day to stare open-mouthed at the cakes behind the glass, the ones that Amber is in charge of watching while her boss bakes more of them in the kitchen in the back. She can’t help but wonder why he never buys one, or even asks how much they cost, so one day she puts aside a slice of cake and hands it to him when he walks in, telling him that all he had to do was ask if he wanted some.

“Actually,” he says with a smile, “I just wanted you to talk to me.”
