Chapter 7

HOW TO LOSE

As the car continued to move, rain started pouring hard which blocked my window view. I stared blankly at the pouring rain.

I suddenly snapped out from the daze and started to talk with Mr. Benson.

“Is Jiyong a local in that area, Mr. Benson?”

“You could put it that way... He really loves his caves.” He laughed. I smiled. He continued, “I appreciate him for giving me new passengers. It has been quiet lately… It’s quite a pain to be alone in the road most of the time.”

“Is Jiyong always that quirky with strangers?” I smiled remembering how he oddly interacted with me.

“Oh, yes! He always was. He is a good kid really. He helped me through after I got into an accident.” I could only respond, “That must’ve been rough.”

“Oh, it wasn’t that bad, actually. Got out of the hospital in just less than a day with no scratch.” He continued. “I swore to Jiyong that I would change and not drink and drive.”

We became silent for a moment until Mr. Benson continued the conversation. “Jiyong had it rough, too, though. Having to deal with loss every time.”

My curiosity peaked. “I couldn’t help but wonder what he meant about him losing. Did something happen?”

Mr. Benson was taken aback by my response. He peered through the car’s front mirror for a moment and looked back at the road with the front glass window’s wiper aggressively wiping off the blurred view form the pouring rain.

“Miss Dara… If you don’t mind me asking, where are we heading?” His voice became deep and somewhat unsettling.

“What do you mean? We are heading home to Walden.” I sat and leaned forward closer to the driver, slightly irritated by the question.

“I meant, specifically, where is this home in Walden?” He continued on with a blank expression.

“It’s in… in… Walden… At… this street… I…” I became confused as my head went blank. I couldn’t remember the specific road where she lived. “What is happening to me? I can’t remember my home address.”

“I don’t think you understand your current situation, Miss Dara… Go on… Try to think harder.” Mr. Benson’s voice was now soft and comforting.

“Walden. At… Cave… I can’t!” I tried to grab her hair, trying to squeeze the information out of my head.

“What happened at the cave, Miss Dara.”

“I fell in the water. Jiyong helped me out and medics took me to the hospital.” I rocked herself back in forth; I was having a panic attack.
