The Cyanide Song of the Siren ~ [Pokémon Legends | Fantasy AU]

Description

"Merfolk are dangerous creatures. They lure humans in with their saccharine song and unnatural beauty, before dragging them to the most hellish depths of their aquatic habitat, drowning them, killing them slowly, watching them suffer.
Merfolk view humans as food, playthings, maybe even breeding stock if they're desperate enough. If you haven't heard the stories, you may be tempted to establish a relationship with a fish-finned siren should you happen upon one. They may act kind, they may gain your trust... but they will betray you.
Never trust a mermaid."

Adaman had heard the warning all his life. But when he meets a wounded siren at the edge of the lake....
Well, let's just say he's always been bad at following rules.

Author's Note before we begin:

Hello! Delilah here! I'm writing this in collaboration w/ my irl friend Alexis! She actually suggested the idea! She's also my beta reader, lol.

Some random things to know about this AU

• Mermaids are omnivorous, mainly eating seaweed, algae, fish, clams, the rare fruit that happens to fall near the lake/river they live in if they're a clear water dweller, and, occasionally, humans.
• Creatures with human-like bodies who use singing and/or seduction to lure in their human prey are known as sirens.
• Most sirens can reproduce with humans or other types of siren.
• As far as society goes, merfolk in particular are much like humans. They're all unique, with different personalities, identities, orientations and diets. They socialize with one another, though some are introverted, like with humans.
• Merfolk communicate from a a distance via singing and other vocalizations.
• While merfolk are, in fact, NOT a primarily female species, in a large group, a female is often the leader.
• There are many different subspecies of merfolk.
• While human-siren relationships are generally frowned upon, human-fae marriage is legal in most places.
• The offspring of a human and a merfolk or fae is different depending on the parents. If the mother is mer/fae, it will be mostly mer/fae but it's abilities will be subdued to the it's human blood. If the mother is human, it will be mostly human with traits of the mer/fae. Human-merfolk offspring can generally switch from having a tail or legs.
• Merfolk can use spells to change their tails to legs, but it's merely temporary and the magic energy is quite hard for them to come by.
• Magic comes in a semi-physical form known as mana. It's only secreted by faeries and was once quite rare, but in recent years with the fae becoming part of civilization, it is much easier for humans to access.
• Fully grown faeries are generally the size of a small young adult human, while pixies are quite tiny and only ever a foot tall at the most.
• Dryads are a close relative of faeries that are part-plant. There are multiple subspecies, though the most common are the oak tree dryad and willow tree dryad.

LOL for all I rant about merfolk-human reproduction there actually isn't any planned for this fic.
