Description

With V-Day just around the corner, lovesick girls and their hormones are revving up to fight tooth and nail for their desired V-Day Ball date in a ruthless battle royale-esque precursor competition: The Valentine's Rumble. Gohan lands number one on their “Most Wanted” list but unfortunately for him, this is one battle where being the strongest in the galaxy is moot. Can his guardian demon-slash-boyfriend save him without exposing their secret relationship to the whole world?

Note:

This story comes after events that take place in “Eyes Only For You”, “Truer Than Love” and “God Smitten”.

There are several modifications to the canon that I have to clarify, just to iron out the differences and discrepancies.

  • The Tenkaichi Budoukai or World Martial Arts Tournament first took place every 5 years, then every 3 years. Then… everyone "mysteriously" forgot about it, and later on, it was only brought back whenever convenient to the "plot". In Retroverse, the tournament stays faithful to the 3-year interval after the 21st, and has been taking place every 3 years ever since.
  • In Retroverse, Videl's birthday is on Age 754 (June 6), instead of 756.
  • Videl first won the junior title of the Tenkaichi Budoukai when she was 11 years old. In Retroverse, she would still be 11 years old when she won her first junior title, only it will be the 26th (and later, the 27th) tournament instead of the 24th. (More snippets of her backstory and what happened in other unhighlighted tournaments that took place will be revealed in other future Retroverse instalments.)
  • In the canon-verse, Gohan enters Orange Star High at 18 years old! Which would mean that Chi-chi only decided to enrol him in school to attend one year – the very last year of senior high! It's like Chi-chi just woke up one day and decided that Gohan desperately needed ONE YEAR of high school (which, needless to say, makes absolutely no sense). Of course, any critical thinker would be able to easily see through this contrivance. It was expedient to be able to force Gohan's meeting with Videl and to set up the Majin Buu arc (I guess gaping plot holes like this are to be expected when the editor scraps the artist’s original story and orders him to rewrite everything to revolve around the "more popular" characters in the name of ensuring higher ratings hence *cough-cough* more money—because pffft! Who cares about a brilliant plot, right? It's only anime anyway, no one cares if it makes sense! Gee, I really pity Toriyama-sensei, to be honest. u_u). So, anyway. In Retroverse (as partly alluded to in “Don’t Smell The Rozealeas”), Chi-chi decides to put Gohan in school at a much earlier age. He enrols at Orange Star High at age 13 (minus the Hyperbolic Time Chamber +1), slated for the first year of junior high school. However, his entrance exam yielded perfect results and he is accelerated to first year senior high school. Given this, Videl and Gohan first meet when they are ages 16 and 13 (+1), respectively.

in Japan: Dying For Company (For chapter 7) Just a warning, if you plan to watch it, you might get triggered because the themes are quite depressing (or infuriating, depending on where you stand). Otherwise, it's a real eye-opener for anyone who wants to be enlightened on the harsh realities of being a woman in Japan.
