I trust you

3 Identities of my Mysterious Wife

"Pack your things." L.Joe told Mihye. "And clothes for around two days. We're going away."

Mihye blinked confusedly but L.Joe already disappeared from the room, leaving her with nothing but questions. "Where are we going again?" she scratched her head. "He ought to have told me where we're going so I know what sort of clothes to pack right?" she pouted.

Nonetheless, she got to work. Within a mere fifteen minutes, she managed to pack her own luggage, and even prepared the necessities like toothbrushes and shampoo and body lotion for the two of them, leaving L.Joe with only the task of choosing his own clothes to pack.

L.Joe came back into the room moments after and surprised her when he already got his luggage ready. She vaguely wondered if he managed to have it ready the previous night. If so, why didn't she hear anything?

"Where're we going, Byunghun oppa?" Mihye asked curiously as L.Joe took her bag from her. L.Joe avoided her eyes. "Just somewhere. You'll see when we get there." he replied.

Mihye frowned. It isn't like L.Joe to be secretive like this. It was really very weird.

She followed behind him, noting how board and y his back was. She shook her head and knocked her forehead lightly. *Babo Mihye. You already like the Knight.* she told herself.

L.Joe got their things loaded into the car and drove them off, only leaving a few minutes for Kevin to say his goodbyes. The butler was confused and surprised about their sudden trip as well, and wasn't pleased that L.Joe had managed to take the object of his affections away from him that easily.

But there was nothing he could do but watch as she go with a sigh.

Mihye glanced at L.Joe and noted that he was rather nervous himself. She glanced at the backseat of their R8, and was surprised to see large formal gifts, like Korean Beef, Gold, and Silverware that were all premium gifts in south Korea. "What are those?" Mihye asked curiously. "Gifts?"

"Hm." L.Joe nodded.

Mihye blinked confusedly. "We're going to meet some other people and give them these?" she blurted. "Who are they? Are they very important? What if I don't act in the right way around them? You've got to tell me who they are, Byunghun oppa!" she exclaimed.

L.Joe looked at her. "Yes they are very important. And you'll find out when we get there." L.Joe just smiled mysteriously. "And there's no way you'll offend them. Don't worry Mihye. Just relax."

Mihye looked at him suspiciously but didn't say anything since it was clear that she wouldn't be able to squeeze another drop of information from him no matter how hard she tried. She sighed and settled back in her seat, and could only wonder what other adventures waited for them.

Even when the car rolled into the driveway of the all so familiar house, Mihye still had no idea what they were doing. L.Joe got out of his seat and went over to Mihye's side, opening the door for her. She gaped at the house and turned to look at him, wide eyed.

"Come on, don't you want to go in?" L.Joe probed, tugging her gently on the arm.

Mihye gaped at him. "W-What are we d-doing here, Byunghun oppa?" she stammered. "Don't y-you know where this p-place is?"

L.Joe chuckled lightly and pulled her out of the car. "Of course I know this place, Mihye." he flicked her forehead. "It's your old house. Your old home." he raised his brows. "Don't tell me you forgot how your old house looked like?"

Mihye's face still looked like it was incapable of any other expression besides surprise. "But what are we doing he-" before she could finish with her question, the door opened and revealed a very happy Mrs Choi. "Mihye ah!"

The mother ran for her daughter and embraced her with all her might. Mihye gasped and hugged her mother tightly as well, already feeling tears gathering behind her eyes. "Umma!" Mihye cried.

Mr Choi appeared in the doorway and smiled. "Forgot your father?"

Mihye looked up, surprised, and pounced on her father with another huge teddy bear hug. "Appa!" she cried tearfully. Mr Choi laughed and looked at his daughter up and down, smiling widely. "You look good, Mihye. I'm glad."

Mrs Choi fussed over her daughter and son-in-law at once. "Oh look at the both of you!" she started. "Is the drive long? Are you two tired? Byunghun! You said you wouldn't reach until two hours later! We weren't prepared at all!" she fussed.

Mihye's eyes widened and her head snapped towards her husband in surprise. "Byunghun oppa?" she echoed. "What is happening? Umma, you mean you knew we were coming?"

Mrs Choi giggled. "Why of course!" she exclaimed. "I was so surprised when Byunghun phoned us late last night and told us that you two lovebirds were coming over for a stay for two days! There's barely enough time to prepare and I had to go out early in the morning today to get fresh ingredients for dinner tonight. Oh Byunghun, I hope you like Kimch-"

"Honey, you're babbling." Mr Choi chuckled. "And definitely overwhelming the young ones." Mrs Choi looked embarrassed and shut .

Mihye stepped towards L.Joe, surprise written all over her face. "You arranged for all this?" she whispered in awe. L.Joe nodded and ruffled her hair. "I know it took me long enough. If Umma didn't remind me, I wouldn't have remembered this either. I'm sure you miss Omonim and Abeonim, I'm sorry I didn't bring you home sooner."

The tears began filling her eyes again. "Byunghun oppa, I don't know what to say." she choked.

L.Joe wiped her tears away and smiled. "Don't need to say anything, just catch up with them." he nudged her lightly and pushed her through the door while he got their things out from the car. Mihye turned to look back at him, throwing a grateful smile.

L.Joe sighed satisfied, feeling this strange sense of happiness overwhelm him. *I'm glad I brought you home. Your smile's worth everything, Choi Mihye.*

The afternoon passed quickly as Mihye and her parents began catching up. They talked about Mihye's childhood, which often brought laughter, but sometimes tears to their eyes. L.Joe listened attentively, being the absolute gentleman about things and not minding at all that he had lost several million won because of his sudden two day leave from the company.

He liked seeing how Mihye smiled. He liked seeing how Mihye interacted with her parents, how she was respectful to them but at the same time the love she felt for them could be obviously seen with just bare eyes.

He could tell that they missed her, and vice versa. He couldn't imagine how these two parents were the very people who had enforced such a strict lifestyle on their daughter, so that she could marry well.

It only dawned on him later that evening that all they did was because they loved her. Because it was apparent they couldn't give Mihye a good life without wealth. Because they pinned their hopes of a better future for their daughter, by hoping that she could get married well.

But they didn't know a divorce was coming.

L.Joe felt guilt rush to his ears when he thought about it. The idea seemed awfully ridiculous and unnecessary now that he thought about it. What would happen to Mihye and her parents? They'd be so disappointed in her. Mr Choi, who thrived on fame and name, might even disown his daugher because of it.

"Byunghun."

L.Joe spun round and saw Mr Choi smiling at him. He bowed slightly. "Abeonim."

Mr Choi waved. "No need to be so polite." he gestured. He looked at the photos that L.Joe was looking at. They were taken fifteen years ago, when Mihye was still four years old. The family of three had gone to the park, and it was the only picture on the mantle piece where the three of them were smiling together, looking carefree.

"That was before my business failed." Mr Choi explained. "We had money then, and I didn't need to worry about Mihye's future. That's when smiles on our faces were a norm, instead of a special occasion."

L.Joe nodded understandingly.

Mr Choi sighed. "I understand I put Mihye through a lot of pain." he confessed. "It was wrong to make a five year old child wake up before the sun was up, to do chores and clean, to learn to sew, and teach her proper table manners. But I wanted her to have a better future Byunghun, the future I couldn't afford to give her unless she married well."

"I admit," Mr Choi continued. "I was overcome with fame and reputation as well. If I manage to get Mihye to marry well, the Choi name would flourish. But now it's not the most important thing of the whole picture. It's how my daughter is happy."

Mr Choi turned to look at L.Joe.

"And you make my daughter happy, Byunghun." Mr Choi muttered gratefully, something foreign shining in his eyes. "I saw myself how you made her smile and laugh today afternoon. I'm glad she married you, not because of the wealth and fame, but because you're you."

"Take care of her, Byunghun. I trust you."

And at that moment, L.Joe finally identified the foreign emotion in Mr Choi's eyes. Something that he hasn't felt before. Something that he might feel in the future. And something that might be the greatest emotion on earth.

And that was a father's love.
