Accident (SinRin)
GFriend One Shot SeriesSpecks of dust seemed to dance in the shaft of the morning lights. The fragrance scent was all in the garden. While everyone was outside enjoying the warm weather, SinB, who was still in the intensive care unit, remained indoors.
"Rin, wait for me back," SinB clasped tightly the hand of the lifeless body, connecting the lifeless body with wires and tubes. Her girlfriend's pulse was displayed on the monitor beside her.
There was no telling how long she would be here, not an inch from Yerin's bed until she regained consciousness.
"SinB, it's almost time, we need to leave," Eunha reminded her as she received the call from Sowon that the car was here. Although the couple was tired enough to take care of them Sowon insisted on fetching her.
In reminiscence of last week, Yerin and SinB were up all night preparing the business proposal for the upcoming launch event. It was a prominent meeting, and their efforts were relentless. They were too tired to avoid the stray dogs and hit the lamp post due to fatigue.
After Sowon and Eunha received the call from the hospital, Eunha took care of the younger who had already been sent to the regular ward when they arrived. Meanwhile, Sowon stood before the operating room. Hours ago, the light was still on and she rubbed her hand nervously while waiting for the results.
The effect of the anaesthetic dosage was fading, and her eyes fluttered to open. Regaining what happened before she passed out, SinB yelled Yerin's name. She pushed away Eunha who sat beside her and ran out to where the operation was. The way SinB pricked out the IV needles and blood dripped was how she had gone. Eunha followed the trace and found her. Sowon was mad when she saw SinB appearance and Eunha looked at the scene helplessly.
Though she was upset, Sowon lowered her voice, saying, "Eunha, you wait here. Hwang Eunbi, follow me.". She did not want to create chaos in the hospital.
SinB obeyed despite her being too worried about Yerin's condition but felt the elder's aura darken. While passing by the station they noticed the nurse conducting a general check when they returned to where SinB was supposed to rest.
"Are you trying to wear yourself out?" Sowon chewed her out with a mad yet worrying face.
"Yerin ... Yerin ..." SinB muttered her lover's name unconsciously.
"I know you are worried about her, but can you at least take care of yourself first? Are you going to wear yourself out during this period? What if she is recovered and you are the one who collapses later? What do you want her to do? " Sowon chided her without letting SinB get in the way.
As a response to this accident, SinB recaptured what they were doing before the accident. "Proposal, yup! The proposal!"
"Hwang Eunbi!" the injured froze as Sowon bawled out her name. The elder's level of madness was off the charts, but as stubborn as she was, SinB remained still in her bed.
Just as the doctor in charge was here, Sowon excused herself to Yerin.
A doctor in a surgical gown walked out of the operating room asking, "Who is the patient's family?".
Sowon and Eunha approached him, "Her family is abroad. We are her close friends. What's her condition?"
''The wound on her hand is okay, but her head received substantial impact; blood clots formed near the critical nerve, so we were not able to treat it. It was too risky to operate. She may regain her consciousness as it dissipates itself. After explaining Yerin's condition to the couple, the physician said, "All we can do now is a wish for her recovery."
"Eunha, you followed them to Yerin's unit. I'll take a look at the worrisome," the taller gave a reassuring hug to boost her up and pushed her to follow the nurses who sent Yerin.
Sowon was on her way back to SinB's ward when she heard some sound in the corridor. Their sound was fine, but she still thought it was too loud. From outside, she saw the doctor was still in the ward seem bargaining something with his patient and the patient wouldn't let him go.
Sowon peeked at the glass window and wondered. In response to her appearance in the void, SinB ceased her agitated behaviour towards the doctor. Sowon shot the daggers at the injured and gestured to the doctor outside so that they could discuss her condition.
Sowon glanced through the narrow glass panel of the door frame and whispered to the doctor. The doctor frowned but agreed in discomfiture over her emotional state.
"She is away from the critical stage. Eunha is with her now," Sowon told half the truth and deceived another half.
SinB widened her bright eyes. "I'll let you see her, but there's one condition," she explained. It was the only way to visit her lover now.
"First, take the meds," SinB gulped them down, followed by a cup of warm water.
"Could I?" she asked after swallowing the last drop of water.
She agreed, too. "After this visit, let's put company work aside. I'll handle it," she said.
Nevertheless, you could see the unwillingness in her eyes.
The woman supported herself with a pole, holding an IV fluid while standing in front of the intensive care unit where Yerin was brought. Since she was not allowed to enter the ward due to her condition, she visited her through the huge glass. Eunha who was always there briefly reported what the doctor said to her.
As SinB self-blamed non-stop, and as the tranquillizer slowly drained her strength, the elder asked to inject it into her. They caught her before she sank.
SinB, I am sorry. That's all I can do, for your best.
Eunha asked for a wheelchair from the nurse outside, who carried the stubborn faint back to her ward.
"Just watch over SinB, the nurse got Yerin," she gently brushed Eunha's hair, then helped her to tuck SinB inside.
Eunha plopped herself inside Sowon's, recovering from what had happened earlier. Being woken in the middle of the night, scurrying about from ward to ward, she was drained and knew her girlfriend felt the same as her. She also needed to drive.
"Okay, little. I drove back to get something for you and SinB. You probably need them later in the morning. Uhm, do you need something for breakfast? "Seaweed porridge downstairs?" Eunha hummed as she responded.
"Don't burn yourself out, huh," Eunha whispered. After the small cuddle session for the tired couple, Sowon gave a soft peck and left.
The sun was blazing in the middle of the cloudless sky, but the heavy curtains blocked out all the rays that attempted to penetrate the void. The ward was still dark as if it was still midnight.
The tea table not far from the bed was piled high with files and the laptop screen was on. A cup of coffee sat on it for three quarters. Sowon came and she found the Eunbis were sleeping soundly, one in bed, one on the sofa.
"What's the time now?" asked SinB rubbing her eyes to adjust to the brightness of the room. Likewise, she felt like waking up from a deep slumber. Remembering she still had a meeting to attend, she got up herself and was about to remove the dripping tubes from her back palm.
Seeing the display on her laptop, Sowon answered her question: "12 in the midday."
"Gosh! The meeting! Why did you not wake up for that?" SinB jolted up as she thought she was late for the meeting.
"I asked Yuna to postpone the meeting. It was scheduled for a week later. " Sowon replied calmly to the younger.
"But..."
"Stay in bed if you want the event launch to proceed smoothly. Having brought the porridge from our downstairs eatery and finished it off with the meds, only you could visit Yerin." The elder knew SinB well. Her weakness was Yerin. She would go to any length to see her.
Amid their earlier conversation, the elder Eunbi was awakened from her dreamland and amazed at how quickly the young Eunbi finished her meal.
Back to the present, Sowon led the younger Eunbi to the back seat rather than the front seat as she hadn't recovered from the trauma. In case the fellow needed it, she gave the fellow the aspirin from the doctor.
Luckily, everything turned out smooth during the meeting and their laborious work did not pay off. Once SinB's proposal was approved, her stiffness melted away.
Her phone buzzed and the caller ID was from the hospital where she took leave for work. Yep, she asked to leave the hospital for a day to attend the meeting.
A few nodded while hearing what the caller said, and SinB urged them to hurry back. Her face could not describe how happy she was but it vanished in a second after hearing what the doctor said.
Didn't you say she would wake up after the blood clot disappeared? "How is that possible?" raged at the doctor, reaching for his white-collar with her only fine hand, but her tall friend stopped her from advancing violently towards the lifesaver.
"Human brains are complex to us. Not all theories can explain the patient's condition. The blood clot dissipates itself and she can breathe involuntarily. All we can do now is wait,' the doctor said. As a result, he disassociated himself from emotional dependency.
The following day, Yerin was transferred to the twin ward with SinB, as the latter still required some treatment.
-
For three entire months, SinB had not gone anywhere other than her office building and Yerin's ward. She had been approved to discharge and was attending rehab treatment regularly. The ward had become her office. SinB spent all her time there completing her work, chatting with her lover, and hoping that the person lying on the sickbed would answer her one day.
"Yennie, did you know? Yuna had successfully proposed to Yewon. They wanted to wait until you came back to life. Six of us and not one less. "If you do not wake up, they will not marry either," SinB said playfully as she played with the unconscious's fingers.
"Yep, if you are not getting up, my Wonnie will wear herself out very soon," seconded Eunha as she brought the dinner into the ward.
The chief board of the company they managed, Yuna, was preoccupied with wedding preparations, and SinB was not planning on leaving until Yerin awoke. Since Sowon was the lead and the last one left, she had to manage the work as well as drag SinB to the launching ceremony as the accident's couple played a significant role in the event.
She said, "Our company's anniversary is in two weeks. Could you wake up for that or our seventh anniversary? It is surely the most meaningful thing in my life right now." Her hands held hers and her eyes slowly filled with tears as Eunha who was sitting on the sofa looked on helplessly.
SinB had to attend the anniversary dinner alone with the couples as the God of Fortune was not by their sides, and Yerin was still in a vegetative state. With a quick speech over, she snuck outback where Yerin was with the wine-filled soda bottle and paper cups too to prevent the staff from doubling. For her, without Yerin, any celebration was meaningless.
As usual, she shared her day with her girlfriend.
"Yennie, you sleepyhead, guess what happens at dinner? Yuna announced their marriage news in public, the male colleagues wailed. You knew how Yewon was an introvert who always hid behind Yuna. Her face was red as a tomato. Hahaha..."
She smiled to herself, bitterly.
After entering the ward, she kept her long coat on, reaching into one pocket and taking out a velvety box. Silver rings silently interposed amidst the soft cushion. The elder preferred the simple design over the sparkling diamond.
"I was going to propose to you in our seventh year, but I couldn't wait. I want to hold you tight right now. I have put yours on for you. Mine will have to wait for you to put mine on for me."
"Yah! SinB! Is being shy seen as a sin? I didn't realize Yuna would announce it to the public without my knowledge!" Yewon entered the ward as the left followed behind with a few takeaway boxes in hand.
"Why are all of you here?" asked SinB inquiringly. Yerin was disgraced when the after-comers interrupted their moment. She knew that the celebration dinner was still going on.
"If we don't come, we'll miss the classic moment of yours," smirking Eunha showed her handphone, "I've got it all. I'll show it to Yerin unnie when she wakes up."
"Ah, I never knew that our SinB could be so gentle. She is usually savage to us," placed her hand over her soon-to-be wife's waist and did not hesitate to .
"Well done for you. You even bring the wine in. As observing the left wine on the table, Sowon replied sarcastically, "Funny thing we brought extra paper cups."
"Then, let's cheer! Only now can we count as complete!"
"Shhh... Keep your voice down. We'll be dead meat if the nurse comes," SinB worriedly reminded the group and drank on behalf of Yerin too.
By midnight, the couples hugged their lovers and slept on opposite ends of the sofa. SinB was the envy of them as she also craved Yerin's warmth.
Half of her was lying on the sickbed holding her girlfriend's hand with one of hers, not leaving her side.
"Dummy, you must be exhausted now. Sorry to have kept you waiting for me."
SinB had become a light sleeper since the accident and Yerin's coma. The slightest noise was enough to wake her up. She pinched herself hard to ensure it wasn't a dream as she heard their voice. She winced out of pain and belief that this was real.
"Yerin..."
When SinB recalled herself, she was about to notice the doctor and their friends having a general checkup when she was pulled aside by a hand.
"Shh, don't. Don't wake them up. They are too noisy." Yerin smiled. SinB's heart-melting swept away the fog lingering there.
"C'mon, let's get up. We sleep together. And ... the gift, I loved it"
