It's a Date

Your last relationship didn’t end in chaos. You both loved each other, but the timing just wasn’t right. He was always busy, you were always busy, and you never really had enough time for each other, so it was pointless to continue when it simply wasn’t going to work.

Though the agreement was that you’d eventually get back together, you weren’t upset when he moved on, and for a while, you wondered if maybe it was your turn to move on as well. But, the thought never lasted too long once you remembered that you still didn’t have time for anyone else.

But, you’d been spending so much time with Baekhyun, enough for you to develop feelings for him; clearly it wasn’t an issue anymore, and when you thought about it, it hadn’t been for a while. You were sure that you were ready for a relationship, and the only person you wanted to be with was Baekhyun.

However, you still had to consider his feelings. Yes, things were going well for you, you’d been on several dates with him, and you enjoyed every second you spend with him despite the confusion he stirred within you. But what about him? Even if he did feel butterflies whenever you came around just like you felt towards him, there was still something there that prevented him from taking the next step with you, and you didn’t want to put any pressure on him to do so.

And unfortunately, that also meant that you had to put some distance between you. No more spending every free moment with him, no more flirting, and no more movie nights.

And despite Sehun’s coaxing, you refused to confess your feelings to him, not any time soon.

“He’s just as much of an idiot as you are. No offence,” Sehun said, jarring you out of your thoughts.

He had invited you to get lunch with him, which you accepted since you hadn’t spent much time with him lately, and you felt bad. Though, you were currently reconsidering that. “I didn’t even mention him,” you said with a roll of your eyes.

But Sehun had known you for such a long time that he was aware that the reason you were being so silent was because of your thoughts running rampant about Baekhyun. You couldn’t exactly blame him.

“You both clearly like each other and neither of you are doing anything about it. You’re not kids; at some point one of you will have to say something otherwise this whole thing will fall apart,” he warned you. You hated when he was right.

But, despite what you felt towards Baekhyun, you were willing to let it fall apart. If he didn’t want a relationship and he accepted one with you anyway, it would fall apart eventually, but with more feelings involved.

He pulled out his phone at the sound of a notification, and by the dumb grin on his face, you already knew who it was. “Eunji is on her way here,” he informed you. “And she’s bringing Baekhyun with her.”

Just hearing his name made your heart race. As much as you appreciated not being the third wheel, seeing Baekhyun right now wouldn’t do either of you any good. “Right now?” you asked.

“Yeah. Right now,” he said with a raised brow. “Why do you seem so scared to see him? Did I miss something?”

“Not really, just… I’ve been trying to put some distance between us. I haven’t seen him a week, so I’m nervous,” you explained, taking a deep breath. “I don’t want to keep falling for him if this isn’t going anywhere.”

“I understand.” He said, giving you a reassuring smile. “But, it’s kinda too late to just back out of this silently now. You’ve gotten so close to him; if you really think it’s not gonna go anywhere, you’ll have to tell him.”

You mulled over Sehun’s words for a moment. Again, you hated when he was right, but you didn’t know how to talk to Baekhyun about it, and you weren’t even entirely sure if you were ready to let this whole thing go just yet.

“There they are,” Sehun informed you, nodding towards Eunji and Baekhyun walking towards you. The distance didn’t change anything for him, it seemed, because he approached you with a broad smile, opening his arms for a hug.

When you fell into his arms, he held you tight, swaying with you in his arms. “I missed you so much,” he mumbled right before letting you go.

He sat down next to you, not taking his eyes off of you for a second while you desperately attempted to avoid the churning in your stomach. You tried not say much to him, especially when he flirted with you, only smiling and giving a hum in response.

You thought you were being subtle about it, since he didn’t seem to be bothered or any less of himself, and the conversation was mostly being led by Sehun anyway. But, once Sehun had to leave, Eunji followed along, leaving you alone with Baekhyun.

“Well… I think it’s time for me to go too,” you announced, rising from your seat. “It was nice seeing you again.”

He stood up with you, and the smile on his face was there, but it didn’t quite meet his eyes. “It was nice seeing you again too, but did I… do something wrong?”

Maybe you weren’t as subtle as you thought. You sighed, finally meeting his eyes. The last thing you wanted to do was hurt him, but from the looks of it, that’s exactly what you were doing. You couldn’t run from this anymore. “You didn’t do anything wrong. Not at all,” you replied, but he seemed unconvinced. “Can we talk somewhere else?”

He nodded, and followed your lead. Normally, he would have already grabbed your hand and laced his fingers between yours. Instead, his head hung slightly while his hands were stuffed in his pockets. You felt awful.

Eventually, you ended up sitting in your car, silently for a moment, until you got the courage to speak. “Okay, the truth is,” you began, feeling your throat constricting the more you thought over your words, “I… I know what I said in the beginning, that I wasn’t looking for a relationship either. But, the more time I spend with you, the more I want to be with you. I know that you don’t want a relationship right now, and I didn’t want to force you into anything so… I tried to distance myself,” you explained.

He sat there, not looking at you, chewing his bottom lip while you shifted uncomfortably, waiting for him to say something, even if he said he wanted nothing to do with you anymore.

Eventually, he nodded, letting out a shaky breath before looking at you. “I can’t pretend that I don’t feel the same way about you, because I do. I look forward to seeing you all the time, and Eunji’s probably annoyed with how much I talk about you,” he said with a breathy laugh at the end. “I wish you told me sooner, but I can’t blame you entirely, because I never said anything either. Regardless, as much as relationships scare me, I always think about us being together.”

Once again, Sehun was right. You had to give him some sort of gift for being right this many times in a row.

He smiled at you, then you smiled at him, heart racing in your chest as he reached over for your hand. “So… what does this makes us?” you asked.

“Right, I haven’t asked officially,” he laughed. “Can I be your boyfriend?”

After hearing those words, all the fuss and confusion you went through seemed so ridiculous now. In hindsight, Baekhyun made his feelings towards you very clear, even if he didn’t outright say it. You had more reasons to be confident that he felt the same than the opposite.

“Of course, Baek,” you replied, stomach fluttering when he flashed you a bright smile. You looked away when your cheeks began heating up, but his finger came under your chin, forcing you to look at him.

His tongue darted out to wet his lips, then he gave you a small grin, slowly leaning over until you could feel his breath ghosting over your cheeks. “Since we’re together, I can kiss you now, right?”

He didn’t have to ask twice. He tilted his head so that your lips would fit together perfectly, then bridged what little gap was left between you. It was a tentative kiss, but no less breath-taking. It was sweet, delicate, and it was perfect — just like him.

He made a noise, a quiet hum at the back of his throat, before pulling away. He still stayed close though, swiping his thumb across your cheek with a smile on his face.

You felt light-headed and carefree, unable to hold back your soft giggles as he stared into your eyes.

“I love it when you laugh like that,” he said softly, placing one last kiss on your lips, then he moved away from you. “Can we go somewhere later this week? As a couple this time.”

“Of course,” you nodded. “It’s a date.”
