Please, don't

Dare to Love Her

Mina was not okay, Chaeyoung could tell. Even if yesterday they had got through it without more tears, even if Mina somehow saw clearly that she had done nothing wrong, Chaeyoung knew how hard all of it was for her. Not just her friend being like this but everything. She could see it better this morning when just the mention of the word gay made her so troubled. It reminded Chaeyoung how things actually were, how Mina was, that even if she had come this far, they had come this far, they were still in a dangerous position.

Mina was simply not there yet, as much as Chaeyoung would like to believe it.

It was not nice, seeing her so afraid, sad and scared about everything. Chaeyoung wanted to make it better, at least when it was just the two of them in their room, she was able to comfort Mina. So that's what she planned on doing after class. The truth is she would've skipped this last class, but since the semester was coming to an end, she couldn't. And maybe Mina could use some time to herself, even if it made Chaeyoung afraid of how many things could come up in her brain, she knew Mina was not the most stable person when it came to these feelings. She always reacted badly.

The one thing that bothered her quite a lot, was Momo. Honestly, what was her deal. You don't treat your friends like that and then all this time she had been in this agreement with Dahyun. 'I really did miss a lot' While eating she took her phone to ask Nayeon before it ran out of battery.

To Nayeon 2:10 pm

To Nayeon 2:13 pm
k, youll do well

'Of course she would know' It was not like it was a secret apparently, Dahyun had no trouble explaining everything so naturally, then how come Mina did not know. Was Momo actually mad at Mina since before or something? It made no sense.

Right now, though, there was no point trying to make it make sense. So Chaeyoung just finished her food.

It had been nice, sharing lunch with Mina but with their friends fully knowing that they were together, not just Sana. Mina even gave her a small kiss, Chaeyoung knew it must have taken a lot in her to do that. It was definitely the highlight of her day, even if things were not looking nice at all. They said goodbye and she promised to go back to their room as soon as she could.

In class she was bored, she wanted to text Nayeon and get more information but she had run out of battery now. On her way back to her room she made sure to buy Mina's favorite food orders, somehow they both needed to cheer up and when they were together things were better. She just hoped Mina had not been so much inside her head, she knew that was just wishful thinking.

What Chaeyoung didn't know was that Mina was not alone. Of course, she had no way of knowing, that's why when she got to the dorms she just got to her room and opened the door, as usual.

Luckily she didn't go straight inside, she saw this woman staring directly at her with a confused expression from near the beds. Chaeyoung didn't know who that was, but her eyes resembled Mina's and then looking a bit to the right, she saw Mina's panicked face. 'it's her mom' Chaeyoung thought 'it's her mom I can't be here'

Somehow she reacted immediately. Chaeyoung was not a good liar but seconds were passing and Mina was not reacting, so she managed. Clearing she spoke, sort of. "Y-your food," she said. "Sorry." She tried to smile. "Your door was open, here's your food." She left both bags on the floor carefully and bowed politely stepping backed right in the space of the door.

Looking up again, Mina had the same afraid face. 'c'mon, Mina, you can do this' But the girl was not moving, then her mother talked.

"Honey, don't be rude." Hearing her voice made Chaeyoung so much more nervous and as if on command, Mina reacted immediately at it.

"Right," she said moving to the small hallway to get the bags. "I forgot I ordered food before you got here, Mom." She took them and stared at Chaeyoung for a few seconds before speaking again. 'she looks terrified' "Thank you," she said for the food, but it was much more than that.

"Enjoy your meal." Chaeyoung closed the door slowly. Her heart was going so fast, she couldn't imagine how Mina must be feeling. She left her ear really close to the door, it was not difficult to hear them.

"We can eat here now," she heard Mina.

"That was really rude." 'Sorry' Chaeyoung answered in her mind. It was true that if she actually was delivery, that would have been quite weird.

"I- well, it must be their first day."

"No, you," she heard the mother 'What?'. "Honey, I understand that she looked so boyish, I thought she was a boy when I saw her, if she hadn't talk I wouldn't have known."

"Right." 'right' Chaeyoung sighed.

"But you shouldn't have reacted like that, even if it's weird, I've taught you manners."

"I know." Mina sounded more composed now. Something in Chaeyoung was not liking this, maybe she should just go. "It's just so weird." 'Are you for real now?'

"Is there a lot of people like that here?" Her mother asked. "Like your old roommate, I'm so much at ease now that you've moved from that place."

"Yes, it was awful." Chaeyoung couldn't believe the words that were leaving Mina's mouth.

"At least she was a bit more normal, this delivery girl, it gave me goosebumps, why do they try to look like boys? It's enough with one abnormal choice."

"I know, it's so uncomfortable," Mina answered quite confident. Chaeyoung felt like crying, Mina couldn't be possibly saying that.

"It makes no sense." Her mother kept going. "Their love would never be real, it's just not natural."

"It's disgusting," Mina said. Chaeyoung couldn't see her face, which maybe was making it all a thousand times more painful, it allowed her imagination to wander. She got that they had to lie to her mother, but there was no motive to agree with her like that, no need. Chaeyoung now really wanted to cry, but honestly, she was just so tired and disappointed, these words were just making all of Mina's progress completely gone.

"I'm just so glad that you're my perfect princess."

"Of course." 'of course'

"You have never disappointed me." Her mother sounded proud. 'right' "You wouldn't."

"Never," Mina answered and Chaeyoung got enough, she just left, she had heard enough. Enough to make her whole world collapse. It was like Kwan all over again, but worse. Much worse

This time Mina had told her before that she was not ashamed of her, that there was nothing wrong with her, but apparently, there was. Chaeyoung was not angry, she was just sad. And tired and completely disappointed. One thing was her mother not knowing but she didn't have to agree with all that. Or add to it.

It is weird how things can just change so fast. This morning she knew their day was going to be different. Both for her friends knowing and Mina being sad about Momo. But she never imagined this. How could Mina just say that after all this time. In a way, Chaeyoung understood but it hurt either way, to know that no matter what, for Mina, they were wrong.

Her breathing was fast, but she was trying to control it, she was not going to go crying to Jeongyeon's room. Or anybody else's room. She just got to a bench to breathe some air and think about it all. At least until she could go back to her room.

Chaeyoung just couldn't stop hearing Mina's words in her head. 'How disgusting must be for her when we kiss, right? Awful' Mina's words did not make sense at all and Chaeyoung knew, but she couldn't help to feel like this. Feelings were just complicated and she felt so much for her.

She knew how Mina was when it was about this. But it was easier to ignore it, to just trust in Mina's progress. Believe her reassuring words, her eyes, her heart, but then this morning. She had looked so sad and worried about Momo hating her. And the way she had just looked at Chaeyoung in the room, completely terrified. It was not fair. Neither for Mina nor Chaeyoung.

'She won't ever get over this, she won't ever want this enough' Chaeyoung felt her heart so heavy, she was not enjoying her thoughts at all, everything looked so blurry. 'She's is just not ready' Chaeyoung couldn't keep lying to herself. Even if they both enjoyed each other's company, she knew deep down, Mina was never going to be brave enough, it was too hard for her, she needed to let her be. Chaeyoung needed to let her be.

Every step Mina gave, there were also two backward. Chaeyoung always had trouble believing all of this was real, maybe it just wasn't. Maybe Mina just liked the idea of them, but that was not enough.

'It's disgusting' 'it's so uncomfortable' 'Mina is never going to disappoint her mother, never' Chaeyoung felt tears on her cheek. She couldn't stop them. She was just looking at the ground with her hands in fists. Her head hurt. She was feeling sorry for herself, it was not fair, not fair at all. Even if she knew what she was getting into from the start, she didn't like it how much it had hurt.'but she's worth it, she's worth it, she's so much worth it'

Chaeyoung was confused. She wanted to keep defending Mina and excusing her behavior but it was not easy now. From the beginning, Mina had no reason to treat her like she did. Then her friends would always mock her for how she was enduring everything her roommate did. Chaeyoung knew that she was being like that, she knew. It was okay, it was worth it once they started being friends, or at least getting along, it's not like they ever acted much friendly, friends don't look at each other the way they did, friends don't make your heart flutter. And when Mina acknowledged her feelings it was totally worth it. But even if their actions have changed, even if they liked each other now, Mina was the same. And Chaeyoung was not a pushover.

Mina was afraid. And as much as Chaeyoung would like to believe her, Mina was ashamed, there was no point denying that. 'She is just not ready' And she would probably never will be. 'I'm just not enough'

Chaeyoung felt like nothing. 'I'm just delivery. Weird tomboy delivery' All of Mina's nice words were empty if she had no trouble saying all of that. Yes, it was Chaeyoung who tried to fix the situation by lying, but that was because she knew how Mina was so afraid of her mother knowing her, even if it felt wrong in her having to hide, she never wanted to hide any of it, she did it for Mina, all she ever did was for Mina, but then Mina didn't hesitate to agree with that woman. Not even after all they've been through together.

Chaeyoung tried to think of the good parts, how perfect it was having Mina. How good it felt, how they both laughed so much. Their times together were perfect. But even if things went from Chaeyoung believing a fantasy to the both of them sharing one, someday, they would have to wake up and Mina as recently shown was not going to be on the same path as Chaeyoung. No. Mina had to be perfect. And all the little actions of progress Mina had taken, Chaeyoung couldn't see them right now, not after that.'It's just not real'

'Like perfect Kwan' Chaeyoung for some reason started to think about him. The guy was hideous and fake but just the simple fact that he was a man, made it all better. Chaeyoung was never going to be like him. And she didn't want to, of course, but she wanted to have as much entitlement as he did. Because that's what Mina needed. A perfect guy like him. Chaeyoung wanted to make it all easy for her.

And it hurt. It hurt so much in her heart, that she knew what she needed to do. Because for some time now, she knew how she felt about Mina.

She loved Mina. Even if her definition of love was not completely clear, she could feel that. Chaeyoung loved Mina enough to see that she was not what Mina needed the most. Of course she wasn't. It was necessary to let her be. To make it easier on her. To just get out of the way for Mina to be.

It was not easy to say that. Chaeyoung was not liking any of it, she wanted Mina so much. It was not fair, but she knew, she knew it was the only right next thing to do. Because if they were not going anywhere, there was no point making things last longer. Even if selfishly she just wanted Mina for herself. It was not fair for her to keep feeling these heartaches caused by Mina's fears and it was not fair for Mina to be afraid all the time.

'We are just not meant to be' Chaeyoung felt her face so hot. She could taste salty tears in . But she was not losing control, she was not having that much trouble breathing. She was just tired and somehow betrayed. 'I'm simply not enough' She felt too weak, so useless, so empty. 'I will never be him'

Still looking at the ground she moved her hands to the back of her head. Nervously scratching it. She didn't want to be thinking all of this. But she had already opened her eyes enough to get the bigger picture. And it was breaking her heart so much. It was her first official relationship, which was funny considering how different and hard it was from her previous experiences. And she knew it was Mina's first relationship too. Those were more motives to just end it all. They could get over it, first relationships never lasted. At least Mina needed to explore more and know her feelings better. That's what Chaeyoung wanted to believe. 'just a first love gone wrong'

And at the same time, she just wanted Mina to hold her and tell her it was all a silly mistake, that they were together for the long run. That it was going to be okay. Mina just playing with her hair, holding her tightly. All these feelings were making Chaeyoung so confused. Like never before. But then that fact was it. It shouldn't be this confusing, should it? 'no, it shouldn't be this hard' That was it, Chaeyoung needed somehow to say all of this to Mina.

She spent hours on that bench, just thinking about it all trying to fight the tears until the sun started setting. She spent another half an hour just trying to stand up, gathering the courage to go back and say what she was thinking and feeling. Her legs were a bit numb.

When she finally got up, she walked slowly, Mina's words echoing in her head. The closer she got to their room, the more her stomach felt weird. This time she knocked first. No one seemed to be inside. After a few minutes, she just got in. It was indeed empty. Turning the lights on, the first thing she did was leave her phone charging.

She wondered if Mina's mother had said anything at all about their beds. Leaving her things on her chair, she saw the canvass where she wrote this morning was missing. She had forgotten about that, luckily Mina saw it on time apparently. It had made her mad, how Mina could be literally kissing her but then the mention of the word gay had made her feel so awkward, so she just left. But then she thought about it and just let it pass, she got it. Now it was different, now she realized it was not just a silly thing, it was so much bigger. Actions had consequences and Mina was never going to learn that if Chaeyoung kept carrying with all this.

Then she heard the door and her stomach felt worse. She was not sure how it would feel to look at her now. She was not sure what Mina could say or if she even knew there was something wrong. She turned around, Mina came near her but Chaeyoung didn't look up.

She could see her feet. It was quiet. They usually liked quiet. Quiet at first was what made her so nervous around her, then it was just so enjoyable and now, it was breaking her heart.

Then she felt Mina's soft hands lifting her head. She closed her eyes, she didn't want to look at her. "Baby," Mina whispered. "Open your eyes." Chaeyoung shook her head. It was weird how many times they'd been in similar positions with her eyes close just answering with her head. "Why?"

"I can't." Chaeyoung was losing all her determination.

"Why can't you?" Chaeyoung didn't answer she just stood there, trying to get it together, then Mina talked again, caressing her cheek. "Look at me."

This time Chaeyoung obeyed. Opening her eyes, her heart felt heavier.

"You cried," Mina said getting completely worried. "You cried," she repeated hugging Chaeyoung tightly. Chaeyoung couldn't help but hide her face in the crook of her neck. Taking in Mina's scent and warmth. She felt like crying again immediately but she couldn't. "I'm sorry." Mina grabbed the back of her head. "I'm so sorry."

They stayed like that for a while, neither of them wanted to let go. Chaeyoung at least knew that by letting go, she was going to have to face Mina and tell her everything she was feeling, but it was harder now. She liked Mina's arms.

But then it was just necessary. Getting away from her neck she finally spoke again. "What are you sorry about?"

"I didn't know she was going to be here."

"Was it scary?" Chaeyoung was not looking at her eyes, she was sure Mina could tell there was something wrong.

"Chaeyoung..." Mina tried to get close again but Chaeyoung just could not allow that again so she moved, turning around, giving her back to Mina. "It was, I had no idea, then you appeared and I just... Thank you."

"For lying?" Mina had not tried to get closer again. Chaeyoung was just looking at the curtains.

"For helping me."

"Right."

"Why did you cry?" Mina now did get close, Chaeyoung could feel her. "Chaeyoung, I didn't know, I wanted to warn you but-"

"Mina, I don't mind that your mother was here, I don't even mind that I had to lie that much."

"Then what is it?"

"Are you really asking me that?" Chaeyoung turned around to look at Mina, it was important to see her face. "You don't think you did anything else?" Her voice was not strong but it wasn't normal either.

Mina looked confused. "Chaeyoung I..."

She didn't say anything else and Chaeyoung couldn't help but laugh a bit. "It is what it is," she said.

"What?"

"You" For some reason Chaeyoung just couldn't stop talking now. She didn't want to attack Mina like this but it just happened. "You won't ever change, I know, I get it. You need to be perfect, you have standards to fulfill. You like me but then that's it you keep doing things and then apologizing, I- I can't keep-"

"Chaeyoung," Mina begged. "Stop." She looked sad.

"I'm trying to," Chaeyoung answered looking directly at her eyes.

"W- what do you mean?"

"I'm trying to stop." Chaeyoung was breathing so fast, her voice was weird. "Us."

Mina had her eyes watery. "N- No, what are you... why?"

"Mina," Chaeyoung tried to sound convincing. "It's time."

"N- No." Mina tried to hold her again but it made Chaeyoung react, moving abruptly.

"Stop!" Chaeyoung didn't want to get mad or argue but she just reacted. "You can't keep doing this!" Mina was looking at her completely surprised. She had tears. "Don't cry," Chaeyoung whispered now, it was not nice to talk louder, there was no need, she knew.

"Why are you doing this?"

"Because I know it's what you need." She needed to start explaining things clearly.

"Chaeyoung that's-"

"I heard you." Whatever Mina was going to say now, Chaeyoung didn't want to hear it, it would only make everything messier. "I don't care much about hiding from your family, but you took no time in agreeing with her, you had no trouble just trashing me."

Mina was looking at her from her position, her eyes were moving fast just looking at Chaeyoung in confusion. "I- I was not thinking clearly."

"But that's the thing," Chaeyoung sighed. "You just never do, not now, not ever." Chaeyoung couldn't stand seeing Mina crying, she felt her own tears forming in her eyes. "If I leave now, you'll get over it, you'll find what you need, you won't be afraid, you can't be afraid all the time and I can't keep feeling like this."

Mina took a second breathing before getting closer slowly. "H- How?"

"Heartbroken," Chaeyoung whispered looking at her. "It hurts." She moved her hand to her chest showing Mina where. "When these things happen, it hurts so much." Tears were definitely falling down her cheeks again.

"Please, don't." Mina's voice was raspy.

"Mina, that way you won't fear anymore, that way you- you won't-" Chaeyoung couldn't speak. 'stupid'

"No, Chaeyoung, don't say it, please, just don't."

"You need to figure yourself out," Chaeyoung tried to speak again. "I can't be in the middle."

"Chaeyoung, I didn't know what I was saying." Mina sounded so desperate.

It made Chaeyoung a bit annoyed, that she always had excuses. "You said it was disgusting."

"That's- I- I didn't mean that."

"I know," Chaeyoung talked plainly. "I know, but you said it. And what you say matters, Mina. What you say or do, affects other people, me."

"You- You can't, just-"

"You said it made you uncomfortable. Me." Chaeyoung looked away, Mina's red eyes were not a nice view. "Even if-" She was going to explain but Mina's phone interrupted.

Mina took it from her pocket, her hands were a bit shaky. She looked at it and then at Chaeyoung. "I- I need to take this."

Chaeyoung just nodded, of course Mina could answer her phone. Yes, they were discussing quite important things but she could use the time. Mina moved awkwardly to the balcony. Chaeyoung had no intention of hearing any more conversations so she just left to look for clothes and change.

Her heart was still going fast, she was really nervous, but not the nice nervous. Mina looked so hurt. Maybe this was not being a great idea, but in her head it was. She had thought about it, it was right. In the bathroom after changing she washed her face, trying to make her eyes less red. Looking at the mirror she examined her face. 'I really don't look like a boy' it was frustrating that people thought she was weird just because of her short hair, it wasn't even that short now. And yes, she usually wore baggy clothes or not so feminine or whatever, but that was her style, she liked it. 'People are just tasteless' She sighed. That was not what was bothering her now, it was just stupid. She was not sure if she wanted to go back out. To her main problem. So she took a few minutes just breathing and then went out.

Mina had already ended her phone call, she was sitting by her side of the bed, her bed. Chaeyoung suddenly felt she needed to move them. The girl apparently had not realized Chaeyoung got back. "We should move them," she whispered.

Mina got startled and turned around quickly. "What? No." She move to where Chaeyoung was standing but without leaving the bed. She was kneeled on it and cupped Chaeyoung's face. "Please, stop it."

"But Mina, I mean it."

"Why?"

Chaeyoung took a deep breath. "Mina, can you look me in the eyes and say that you are okay with our relationship? Can you say that? That we are both girls who like each other, do you think that's okay? 'cause you can't ignore that, I know you ignore many thi-"

"Stop."

"Can you?" Chaeyoung insisted.

Mina looked at her but didn't say anything.

"This morning," Chaeyoung kept going, "you-"

"Stop," Mina talked louder. She still looked so hurt. "Stop, no, y- you can't end things."

"Why?"

"Because I... I need you." Mina was looking for Chaeyoung's eyes but Chaeyoung was afraid of looking at them now.

Chaeyoung took a deep breath. Mina's hand on her face felt so warm. "You had no trouble saying bad things about me, or Sana." She didn't like saying things like that, but Mina needed to see. "You are ashamed."

"I- I didn't mean any of it."

"But you said it, Mina," Chaeyoung cried taking her hands from her face. "You said it and it hurt."

"I was scared."

"And I know that. That's why I'm telling you that we can't-"

"No!" Mina was definitely not going to let her say it. "Please, don't."

"Mina..." Chaeyoung left her hands and caressed Mina's cheeks now, wiping her tears away with her thumbs. "I just want things to be easier for you."

Mina looked down. Somehow she didn't say anything else, just got out of bed and left for the bathroom probably to change too. Chaeyoung thought that maybe Mina had understood. So she just got in bed. She felt so small, she didn't turn her night lamp on, she forgot. And when Mina got back and turned off the other lights, she didn't mind either. Darkness was not her main worry right now.

Mina got in bed and didn't hesitate in getting close to her, wrapping her arms around her from the side, as if nothing had happened. "You didn't turn your light on," she whispered. Her voice was still raspy.

"I don't really care," Chaeyoung whispered back, she had her eyes closed. Mina was surrounding her and had supported her head on her chest but Chaeyoung didn't move either to try and get her away or receive her properly. It hurt having to see Mina like this, her touch and her voice. Chaeyoung felt stupid. But she could hurt her now and then it would be okay for Mina. She could get over it. That's what she kept telling herself.

"Tell me you were lying."

"I was not."

"I'm sorry," Mina cried. Chaeyoung could feel how her grip was getting tighter.

"You can't be sorry all the time, do you see that?" Chaeyoung asked softly.

"I've tried, I swear I've tried."

"You don't have to, see? If I go then you don't have to."

Mina didn't answer right away, Chaeyoung could just hear her sniffing and her body felt warmer than usual probably from the crying. "You promised," she said turning around and moving up to be facing Chaeyoung. "You promised I was not going to lose you."

That was true, Chaeyoung thought about that too. But the answer was as easy as her other conclusions. She opened her eyes. "If I go, then you won't lose no one else," she thought about Momo, "and you won't disappoint no one else," she thought about her mom, "and you won't have to be afraid or sorry all the time."

"But I want you." Mina blinked and more tears appeared. Chaeyoung's heart was aching. Tears and Mina shouldn't go together, her face was just too beautiful. Angels shouldn't cry.

"I want you too." That was true. "I do, I..." 'I love you' She thought, but there was no point saying that now that she was trying to break up with her. "I want what's best for you, and when you're with me, you put everything at risk. You asked this morning why was it all so hard, it shouldn't be hard, that's why I'm doing this, you can forget me, you can get over it and be happy, I know you can."

"You hate me."

"Mina, no. Are you listening?" But Chaeyoung knew Mina was lost. She hadn't stopped crying even if her tears were silently falling. She hated that she had made her cry.

Mina didn't answer, just stared at Chaeyoung. "You like someone else."

"What? No." Chaeyoung held her face that was in front of her and fixed a strand of hair that was hanging because of her position. "It just hurt, I don't want to feel like that, I don't want you to endure it all either, we are not easy, we knew that and now if we are not going anywhere then we should just stop. I saw you today, Mina, you were completely terrified and then..." It pained her to say that, she didn't want to leave, she didn't want things to end but it was just the easiest path for Mina. Where she didn't have to go through all of this.

"But-" Mina spoke but then opened and closed, doubting her words. Then Chaeyoung saw how she moved lower fast. Mina tried to kiss her, but she moved in time, putting a hand in .

"Mina," she complained softly. "I know you try to kiss me when you don't know what to say or do." It had happened many times, it was not good communication. But Chaeyoung had always let her, this time, though, it was different. She removed her hand. "You should move."

"No," Mina shook her head. "No, no, Chaeyoung, please, don't." She was getting upset again. "I need you, I- we- we can talk tomorrow I-" She breathed in loudly. "You promised." Mina moved down again, to her first position holding Chaeyoung tightly. "You promised, I- I don't want easy, the dragons, I- I want you. You make me feel real, you, I know I don't deserve you, I-"

"Mina." Chaeyoung now moved one hand to caress her hair. "Just breathe."

Mina did but she didn't let go of her tight grip. "Please don't," she whispered again. "Just don't." Chaeyoung kept caressing her hair and Mina kept holding her tight and whispering things under her breath.

That night Chaeyoung didn't sleep at all, she made sure Mina got tired of murmuring and crying until she fell asleep. From feeling her agitated breathing until it got steady. She was sure they hadn't exactly broken up, Mina had not let her. It was the weirdest night they had ever shared. When Mina was sleeping, Chaeyoung allowed her mind to process everything and think it over. She was not getting to a different conclusion, but maybe Mina was right and they could talk about it better tomorrow. So she allowed herself one more night of just having her in her arms. Maybe tomorrow, she was going to see it all less misty. Maybe tomorrow she would want to love Mina selfishly. At least for tonight, she wanted to believe that, maybe she had got it all wrong.
