Childhood: Ashes
The Dokkaebi - Vol. 1
King Lee Byunghun died a week ago and in the meantime the kingdom finally had decided on a new king.
They had gathered all in a small meeting room in the palace. Taeil sat in a corner and listened attentively to Lee Seung-gi and Suzy’s conversation. The boy himself did not really speak much to these people around him, the only person he would talk to, was his roommate. At least, everyone knew that he was not mute since everyone had overheard him as he had comforted Taehyung a week ago. Taehyung sat on a cushion with his knees pulled to his body. He cried as he was sad because of the death of the king who had took him into the palace nearly a year ago.
Lee Sung-gi and Suzy stood in the middle of the room.
“What, Song Il-Kook?”, Seung-gi asked astonished, “Are you sure about that?”
Suzy nodded thoughtfully.
“And... why did he come here?”, the young guard asked her.
“Well, he asked for a returned guardian”, she admitted.
“A guardian? Which guardian? Did he know about the king?”, Seung-gi wanted to know, worried about the situation.
“He did not really want to know about the king’s death…”, she told him and crossed her arms, “Song Il-Kook has adopted a boy who is looking for someone. He hoped that this person was his father, or a family member. You should have seen the boy when I mentioned Shim Changmin. He had a mental breakdown.”
“Wait a minute, you mentioned Shim Changmin?”, the young guard asked her, unwilling to believe she did something like that.
“Just his name...”, Suzy said.
“Well, the Black Army does not need to know about the new ruler. It will take time to protect and defend Gongju. King Shim Changmin needs time to get used to the title and position he is in now.”, he explained.
Suzy nodded nervously and looked to her feet.
“Hm... poor boy.”, Seung-gi continued, “Since when does the leader of the Black Army adopt children? Is it not against their rules? Is it not just his followers abducting them?”
Both shrugged briefly and then fell silent again.
The time had come.
They had to leave now because the ceremony for the deceased king soon began. The two boys ran into their room together. Taeil put on different clothes quickly. A white hanbok with a hooded cape, and of course white shoes. Taehyung just stared at the clothes which were lying neatly on his bed, and he was told to change into. He did not touch them.
“Come on… Change your clothes… Do you want his soul to wait any longer?”, Taeil said with a low volume, “You know… unless the body is buried by a family member or burned by someone… your soul will not be able to leave this world… and find peace…”
Lee Byunghun's soul already had a week to wait, because of Shim Changmin, the new king. Byunghun’s soul would not worry about these five minutes Taehyung needed to himself. Taeil poked his upper arm and distracted the little boy from his thoughts. Taehyung gulped and then nodded with a sad expression. He changed slowly into the white fabrics. As he finished the two boys looked into the mirror together. Taeil fixed the bandage covering his eye and then dragged his friend outside.
Suzy also wore white now. She should be wearing a Hanbok for women with a long underskirt, but since she was an officer, she wore white trousers like everyone else. Seung-gi however, was the only one wearing black. They rushed out of the palace together with all the staff and left the center of Gongju.
The ceremony took place on the sacred hill, which was overgrown with lush green. The weather changed all day. Sometimes the sun was shining, the next mom
