THE LAST WERE PACK

There was a legend from millenia ago of WERE creatures lurking on the planet. They are much too strong, they move fast and they are warriors like no humans ever born. But their strength became too great a threat and they were eliminated completely.

Or so humans think...

Taehyung had sworn to protect another wolf with his life, blood and bones. That means he treats her like his mate and he plans to fulfill his promise by claiming her as his mate eventually. He's taking is time though, there is no reason to  act on it urgently.

Jisoo knew Taehyung is her mate, He is hers. But he keeps rejecting her because of the promise he made to protect another female. Every instict tells Jisoo to fight for her mate. But how can she fight for someone who does not want her?

Prologue

Jisoo felt it. It was like all the hair on her nape rose and she knew… she knew she was not alone. She was being followed. It was dark in the street. She shouldn’t be out walking. But she had no choice, it was the only apartment she could afford  within an hour from the preschool she’s teaching at. She seldom goes home this late, but she couldn’t leave the child. Danny’s parents had a family emergency and wasn’t able to pick up the kid until it was already dark.

This neighborhood though…

It is far from pleasant.

From the time she viewed the apartment the first time, she knew her stay in that place would only be temporary. She will not stay there for long. She will save enough money and maybe get a raise eventually. And then she will look for a better place to stay. But at the time, she really did not have a choice. Her cash was low and the apartment was exactly what she could afford. She taught a year in another city and eventually decided to transfer here because the salary for preschool teachers are slightly higher.  But really… Even then, there was a voice inside her that tells her she will not have peace in this place.

Jisoo clutched her shoulder bag tighter to her chest. Whoever is following her is close. But she did not want to stop walking, she did not even want to look back. If she did, it might be what the stalker is waiting for.

Why is this neighborhood so dark?! Why are the people here not bothered that the street lights are all not working? Aren’t they afraid that crimes will increase?  If she wasn’t holding her phone as a flashlight, Jisoo would not even see where she’s going.

Jisoo felt that hot sensation on her leg.  Every time she feels danger… she would feel her legs getting hot. When she was younger, the feeling was tolerable. The pain and the weird feeling got intense through the years. And not only that… Every time it gets so hot, weird hair that she now calls fur (yeah call that exaggerating) appear on her skin. They were fire brown color close to a bright orange. Once the hair appear, the heat goes away. But the hair…. they stay for days. Jisoo tried everything to take them away… she’d shave her leg but it will just grow as fast as you shave them! Nothing worked. Eventually, the fur did go away after a while. But when things like this happens… when she feels danger… her legs start to heat up again… It’s probably anxiety related. Every person has different symptoms of anxiety.

Fur maybe top the list of weirdest anxiety reactions but she’s not going to just admit that to anyone.

Jisoo took a deep breath.

Just two more blocks and she’ll reach her apartment. She needs to get inside fast and lock the door after. She has to make sure she does it as quickly as she can.

Jisoo tried to walk faster. But the faster she walked, the stronger the feeling of being followed was. It was as if the man was just behind her.

Jisoo bit her lip hard. Should she call the emergency hotline? The city has an emergency hotline. But she can’t make a call with the man behind her. What if he gets triggered to do something worse if he hears her make a call?

Jisoo felt hot tears pooling in her eyes, from the pain of her leg and from fear. She has no one to blame but herself really. She chose to leave her peaceful life because she was greedy to earn a little bit more than what she was making. She wanted to pay for all the debt she incurred in the University and she wanted… she just wanted to stop relying on others. She wanted to stop being a burden… She wanted to be her own person who can live a comfortable life on her own.

But at this moment, even that dream is foolishness. If this man is going to kill her tonight, she should have just stayed in that little city. She should have just been contented with having a debt all her life.  At least… she would still be alive.

Jisoo saw her apartment. Is there a way at all where she can get inside safely? Her legs are killing her.

Jisoo opened her bag, not stopping a single step. She tried to look for her key. And when she finally found it, she gripped the key on her hand, her knuckles turning white.

And then she was in front of her apartment. She ran to her door and immediately tried to put the key in the keyhole but her hands were shaking.

“C’mon… please…” she whispered.

And then she felt a breath behind her ear. Jisoo stopped cold. Her hands shook stronger as she saw a hand from behind her. It was reaching for her shaking one. Jisoo stood frozen. She does not know how big of a person was behind her. She doesn’t know if he has any weapon. If she fights him, will he be able to end her life immediately?

And then the hand took the key from Jisoo’s hand. It opened the door very quickly using Jisoo’s key. And then Jisoo felt a hard and large thing behind her pushing her slightly inside her house. Jisoo stumbled a little and then she heard her door closed behind her. Jisoo felt cold sweat all over her. Her chest is beating so loud and fast. Fear… her fear is choking her.

And then she heard the door locked.

Should she just wait? What does this man need from her? Is it better for her not to see the face of her assailant? Or should she at least see who will end her life?

Jisoo took a deep breath. If she’s going to die tonight, she’s going to fight until her last breath.  It would be messy but… it would make people be afraid and maybe just maybe they will start fixing all those streetlights!

Jisoo turned back, she did it slowly. And then when she did, she saw a tall man looking straight at her. It was still dark, but Jisoo could see his height and his silhouette. She could not think of anyone she knows who could be the same height and body. He was standing at least a foot taller than her. His body was lean.

“You have no survival skills.”

Jisoo heard the man’s voice. It was a deep and rich male voice that sent chills to her bones. And then a passing car somehow illuminated the room. And she saw him, it was just for a second or two. But Jisoo’s breath was caught in . The man’s face… This man could be the most handsome man she had ever seen in her life. But his eyes… Jisoo could see coldness in them as if he can freeze her to death.

Tsk! She wasn’t able to see if he had any weapon in him. She got distracted with his… face. She has to open the light somehow.

“You should not lead someone you don’t know to your own house. If his intention is to steal from you, you just gave him a leverage.” said the man.

Jisoo gupled in fear. No matter how attractive this man is… Jisoo could feel danger in his presence.

“Wh… what do you want… from me?”

Jisoo’s voice was trembling, she could hardly breath.

The man did not answer. Instead, he went to the window and opened the curtain slightly, looking outside. It was as if he was making sure there was nobody there.

Jisoo’s hands clenched to fists on her side.  If the man is going to commit a crime, the first thing he would want is to make sure there is no witness.

“I have no money.” said Jisoo. “The only money I have is for my breakfast and another meal… and that’s it.”

She can give the money. She will not fight him. As long as he leaves her in peace.

However, the man continued to look outside.  It was a few minutes of complete silence except for cars passing by. Jisoo’s heart is going to burst out of her chest.

And then her eyes adjusted to the dark… Jisoo could now see the man’s eyes from what little light there was. His eyes were sharp as he surveyed the surrounding.

“Take the money if you want. But please leave my phone with me. It’s the only way I can communicate with important people.” said Jisoo.

Jisoo saw the man’s lip turned  up into a smirk. But he stayed quiet for a while as he went to the other window, still looking outside as if he was guarding the house from something.

It was excruciating how much time it took without anyone talking. Jisoo wanted to just end this night.

“You know…” he finally said. “If I need money from you, I would have robbed you on the way.”

OH KAY… So it’s not the money… Then why did he follow her to her house… What does he need?

Oh no… Does this man plan to her?

Now this… This she will not allow without a fight. She will die fighting  before this man can molest her!

Why her anyway? There are so many more beautiful and attractive women along the way? Why will this man single her out. From his looks, he wouldn’t have a hard time getting himself a one night stand?

Wait?

Is he a serial ? Is that it? He does not get off with willing women, that’s why he stalked unwilling victims?

Jisoo’s gulp was audible. She started dialing the emergency number on her phone. But before the call connected, Jisoo felt the man grab hold of her phone and pulled it away from her. How can that happen? He was standing six feet away from her! He moved so fast! Jisoo did not even feel the man get near her, except now he was holding HER phone in HIS hand!

The man ended the call.

“I would not do that if I were you.” said the man, shaking his head slightly. He is now standing a foot away from Jisoo.

With this close proximity, Jisoo could definitely feel the difference in their height. He’s much much taller than her. And he is very intimidating. His body radiates masculine energy so intense, Jisoo stepped back. This man does not talk much and he doesn’t look at her much… For someone who’s about to a woman, he is not showing any hint of desire for her.  He even felt… inidiffirent… It seems like he was more interested about what’s happening outside the house than her!

And then the man seemed to be scrolling her phone.

“That’s… invasion…” Jisoo’s throat moved. “of my privacy.”

The man did not seem to hear her. He did not speak nor react to what she said.

“You … should not look at my phone.” said Jisoo.

Then man’s eyes turned to her then. And Jisoo wanted to bite her words back.

“The emergency hotline in this area is useless.” said the man. “You don’t seem to have anyone saved on your speed dial.”

What?

“Speed… dial?”

“Yes. A family or a friend you can call in times of emergency.” The man showed Jisoo her own phone.  “You should set up at least one.”

Is this how serial killers make small talk? If she survives this, she will definitely write a book about this.

And then the man seemed to enter a number and to Jisoo’s surprise, he even called the number. He took his phone out showing Jisoo that he had just called his own phone!

Is he stupid? Why will he leave a trace like that if he’s here to or kill her!

And then the man gave Jisoo her phone back.

“Save that as your speed dial.” said the man.

“Wh… what?”

“My number. Save it on your phone. Set it up as your speed dial.” said the man.

Irritation started building up on Jisoo’s chest.

“I know it’s your number. But why will I need to save it on MY phone?” asked Jisoo. “I don’t know you. And to be honest…  You are scary.”

The man took the phone from Jisoo’s hand again and then he saved his number as Jisoo’s speed dial.

“What are you doing?”

“Trust me. You would want to save my number.” said the man.

Now wait. He could be an attractive man but she’s not interested in his number at all! Why will she even want a scary man’s number on her phone?

And then the man’s eyes sharpened as his eyes went to the window. He handed Jisoo her phone back.

“Remember. Call me.” said the man. “Lock your door. Don’t forget the windows.”

And then the man went out of her house. Jisoo went to the window to look outside but the man was gone. It’s like he disappeared!

What the heck was that? What just happened?

The man followed her to her house and scared her to death! But he did not steal even a cent from her! He did not even touch her at all? No, why was there a little disappointment?

All he did was look outside her house like a watch dog and saved his number on her phone!

What was that about? Such a weirdo!

Jisoo sighed. She went to her door and locked it. She went to her windows and checked if they were all locked.

Jisoo sank on the floor. She felt so drained.

Jisoo pulled her skirt up and looked at her leg. The pain slowly disappeared in the middle of her conversation with the mystery man, if that can be called a conversation at all.  Jisoo’s eyes widened as she saw that the fur now almost fill her entire legs. What is happening to her? The fur used to only be patches. Two years ago, she was shocked to see how much bigger the area the fur had occupied. But it only affected one of her legs back then. Now… Now both her legs are affected! And she has the fur all over them!

Oh no…

A mystery man just stalked her and went inside her house….

Now this… What is going on with her?

Jisoo bit her lip hard.

She can’t stay in this house. That man knows where she lives. She has to find a new place to stay.

-------

Jisoo’s head was aching. It had been a week since that  night that scared the life out of her. She reported it to the police. But she still could not find a new place to stay. Every night since then, she would hurry home before the sun goes down. And she would lock her house shut. As a result of all the stress she got from that incident, she could not sleep. She was scared… she still is. And it’s taking a toll on her body. She feels dizzy and her head is aching. And the fur!  It was taking a much longer time to disappear.

Jisoo was walking home, the sun was setting but it wasn’t dark yet. She is tired and she needs her bed. She’s dizzy and her head is killing her. She was probably not aware of her surroundings. She reached her house before she felt that warning bells in her head.

She’s being followed.

Again.

But this time, the heat on her leg was too much, Jisoo winced in pain.

Jisoo sighed. What does this man really want? She’s tired of being scared! Whatever he wants from her, it’s better to get on with it! The sooner it ends, the better!

Jisoo turned back. But instead of seeing the man she was expecting, she saw another man, a man she had not seen before. He was wearing a black long sleeve shirt and black pants. His hair was long, his skin pale. And he was looking at her.

Jisoo felt fear. This man… it’s still daylight and yet he was following her. He’s not like mystery guy at all!

“What… what do you need?”

And that’s when she saw his eyes. His eyes were all black! It’s as if he does not have scleras!

Jisoo felt her legs had life of their own as she run to her house. She was able to open her door but  the man grabbed her hair. She was being pulled from her door. She kicked and kicked. Until she got free. She ran to her house, slammed shut the door and locked it!

Jisoo sighed in relief. She’s safe for now. That… That is an assault! She has to call the emergency hotline!

Jisoo tried calling the hotline but the line was busy.

And then there was slamming on her door. It was not a knock! It was loud banging!

Jisoo tried to dial the emergency hotline again but it was no use. That mystery man was right! The hotline was useless.

And then Jisoo’s door made a creaking sound. Jisoo saw that her door was breaking. What the-

And then her door broke. Jisoo ran. She ran to her room locking it.  But there is no escaping. If this man can break the main door, he can surely break the door in her room. How can one man do that? Why is this man so strong?

Jisoo sank on the floor. Her legs were killing her. She pulled her pants to see her legs and saw the fur starting to spread again.

What is she going to do? How will she survive this? Unlike the mystery man the other night, this one is determined to hurt her.

Remember. Call me.

No she shouldn’t. That mystery man is also a threat to her. She does not even know who he is and what he wanted from her the other night. She can’t call him. Certainly not.

And then the door of her room shook. The man outside is trying to break it open. There is no time to think.

Jisoo hit her speed dial.

“C’mon pick up…”

But the man did not answer her call.

Oh no… is this her end?

And then she heard a knock on her window. She turned and saw the mystery man standing outside her window, knocking! In the fading light of the sun, Jisoo could see that the man is indeed breath taking. He is a beautiful man, the type of man you would only see on magazines. Why would such a man stalk her the other night?

Jisoo closed her eyes tight. This is no time to appreciate beauty.

“Do you need help?”

She heard the deep voice of the man from outside the window.  Jisoo opened her eyes and saw her door about to break.

“I can break this window but it will cost you.” said the man.  “The broken door downstairs will already cost you.”

Jisoo ran to the window and opened it. The mystery man jumped in. But his feet did not make a sound as he landed. It was as if he floated.

And then the door burst open. Jisoo screamed in fear. The mystery man pulled Jisoo behind him.

“Close your eyes.” said the mystery man.

The mystery man waited for the other man to attack. And when he did, mystery man grabbed the scary man’s neck. And then mystery man broke it. Mystery man broke scary man’s neck! With just two fingers! Jisoo even heard the bones cracking!

Jisoo felt herself hyperventilating. Did she escape a murderer only to let another murderer… a much stronger murderer come inside her own house?

The scary man fell on the floor lifeless. Jisoo stopped breathing. And then mystery man faced Jisoo.

Is she next?

“Tsk!” Mystery man’s face was angry, his deep voice was filled with irritation. “ I told you to close your eyes!”

Jisoo gulped.

“I… was too scared…” whispered Jisoo

“You don’t trust me.” said the man. “You couldn’t close those damn eyes because you don’t trust me!”

“How… when I… don’t even know you.” said Jisoo.

The man sighed.  He seems to be trying to calm himself.

“Name is Kim Taehyung.” said the man, his voice a bit calmer now.  “Next time I tell you to close your eyes, you close your damn eyes, is that understood?”

Jisoo nodded immediately.

And then Jisoo saw the scary man’s body slowly turning to ashes.

What? Ashes? Human bodies decay but… they don’t decay that fast!

“It’s because they’re not humans.” said Taehyung, as if reading Jisoo’s mind.

“Wh… what are they?” asked Jisoo

“Umbra… shadow. They look human… they can act human. They can hurt you… they can kill… But they aren’t humans. Their only mission is to kill the likes of us.” said Taehyung.

Kill? So this man… this umbra was indeed out to kill her! But why?

“The likes of us?” asked Jisoo. “What do you mean? I… have not done anything to hurt anyone… I am a preschool teacher!”

“We don’t need to do anything for people to want to hurt us.” said Taehyung. “Sometimes, being who we are is enough to make people hate us.”

“I don’t understand…”

“It’s too dangerous for you to stay here now.” Taehyung looked outside the window just as he did the other night. “You have been on their radar for a while now. I have been watching. They could not attack while I was around. But I had to leave earlier to make a report. And they took advantage, they attacked.”

“You… have been watching me? Why? I don’t understand what’s happening…”

“Yeah… of course you don’t…” Taehyung sighed.

Taehyung took a large backpack he saw on a table by Jisoo’s bed.

“Look… we can’t stay here. Get everything you need. Put it inside this bag. Just take your necessities, don’t bother taking too much clothes. It will only slow us down.”

“Where will we go?” asked Jisoo

Taehyung went back to the window.

“Somewhere safe.” said Taehyung.

Jisoo had no choice. She still does not trust this man… but he is not doing anything yet to hurt her.

Not yet.

But he can.

“Hurry, Jisoo. We don’t have much time.” said Taehyung.

Jisoo’s eyes widened.

“You… know my name?” asked Jisoo

The man smirked.

“It’s not just your name I know.” said Taehyung. “But this is neither the time nor place to talk. Hurry.”

-------------

Taehyung walked down the stairs, but he was fast. Maybe it was because he had long legs. He stood by the door waiting for Jisoo having that really irritated look in his eyes as if his legs weren’t twice as long as Jisoo’s, not to mention he moves like a cat! When Jisoo reached the door, Taehyung reached for the bag behind her and took it.

“What are you doing?” asked Jisoo

Taehyung put Jisoo’s bag on his back.

A gentleman?

“I told you… we do not have much time. We can’t have any reason to slow down.” said Taehyung.

Did he take Jisoo’s bag so that he can help her walk faster?

And then Taehyung walked outside, Jisoo followed him. She turned back and saw the damages in the apartment. How on earth will she pay for all of those?

“We’ll take care of that. Take it away from your mind.” said Taehyung. “Focus on everything I’m going to say.”

“Who are you talking about when you said WE?” asked Jisoo. “Who’s WE when you said We’ll take care of that?”

Taehyung sighed.

“I assure you that paying for the damages in that house should be the least of your worries. Staying here for another minute though should make you run for your life.” said Taehyung.

Jisoo gulped.

“Umbras do not operate alone. They come in groups. That means the umbra we fought earlier? He isn’t alone. His friends are just around waiting to attack. I can fight them. But I also need to protect you. Right now, I honestly think running away from them will be the best course of action considering that you do not have any skills to fight them yet.” said Taehyung.

Yet.

And then Jisoo noticed two men a few feet from Taehyung. They also had long hair and they were very pale just like the umbra earlier.

“Tsk…”

“There are more of them coming.” said Taehyung.

And then Taehyung faced the two men. The umbras attacked him. But Taehyung was ready. He avoided the attacks and then he pulled both men’s nape from behind them. And then he broke their necks from behind, one hand each umbra.

The umbras fell on the ground.

“One or two is easy. But once they come in hundreds, it becomes a workout. But I can’t afford a workout right now, not when I have someone like you with me. The chances are, you will be killed while I am fighting them.” said Taehyung. “Now do you understand why we need to get going?”

“They come… in hundreds?” Jisoo is shocked beyond words!

Jisoo does not need anymore convincing. Jisoo ran to Taehyung’s side. She stood very close to him, her eyes looking around them.

“Yes… let’s go now please.” said Jisoo.

And then Taehyung and Jisoo ran without looking back.

***Guys, I am under quarantine now and I am super bored that's why I started writing. I feel all rusty though since I have not written for a while. I do not think this is going to be a long story. I don't think I have the power to write something really long anyway. I will try to update whenever I get the energy to write. :D Forgive my photoedit, you know I . hehe...
