Foreword

Even if you get lost

And it takes you a while

Come round and round back to me

Even if it’s far ahead in the future

Someday, even if we’re apart

I want you to know how I cherish you

When I look at you as we sit facing each other

I melt down from your gaze

Every little detail is so precious ...

My I

2002

Five-year-old Xu Minghao stood timidly behind his mother, protected from the intimidating men and women his father was communicating with in a different language than his own. Mom and dad had said he'd be meeting new friends here, he'd get to play with kids his own age but how could he when he didn't know what they were saying? Every now and then his eyes would peer towards the three children playing tag but the moment one of them would even look in his direction he'd duck behind him mom, his nerves getting the better of him.

“Dear, why don't you go play.” His mother's gentle hand combed through his hair but even her kind eyes didn't bring comfort.

“I-I can't... why did we have to move here?”

His mother smiled, “These people are like family to your father. You'll get used to this place Minghao, don't worry.” she gently pushed him towards the other kids, “if you hide forever you'll never make friends.”

Minghao hesitated, giving his mother one last longing look, then moved towards the other kids. It was a tall boy with two girls, the three of them were laughing and playing without a care in the world all the while he felt as though the world was barring down on his shoulders, “A-ann-” he was cut off as one of the girls collided with him knocking them both down.

“I'm so sorry.” the girl spoke clumsy mandarin as she picked herself up and held out her hand to him. He sat there, unsure until she spoke, “My name's Yoohyeon, welcome.” he'd never seen a girl so pretty before, she was someone who had a smile brighter than the sun.

He took her hand and got to his feet, his heart beating rapidly as he shyly looked down, “I'm Minghao.”

“Do you want to play with us?” again, it was clumsy simple mandarin but she got her point across and it made him feel less like an outcast.

“Yeah, come on.” Minghao looked up at the boy and other girl.

He hadn't known then that they would end up being his best friends, his soulmates.

Bitter words and a broken vase, that's what her parent's relationship had amounted to. Kim Yoohyeon sat at her window calculating the distance she'd have to walk to get to her cousin's house, to be home. If she could steal one of her parents' cars she could be there in less than two hours. Closing her eyes, she tried to ignore her parents yelling, she tried to focus on the night sky and the fact that in a month she'd get to stay at her cousin's house for summer break.

“I should have listened to my mother, you worthless piece of !” another crash, mom was on a rampage.

Yoohyeon's cellphone pinged along with her heart, it was Minghao! He never failed to know when exactly she needed someone to talk to!

'You good?'

She hesitated before typing back, 'Can you call?'

It didn't take more than a second for her phone to start buzzing, “They've been fighting for hours now.” she spoke quietly into the phone. She wanted to be nonchalant, unbothered but the truth was she needed her best friends more than ever tonight.

“Do you want to talk about it?” his voice was warm.

“I just don't want to be alone right now, can you just talk... About anything, have you painted anything new?” Yoohyeon brought her knees to her chest, closing her eyes as Minghao went into mundane details about his latest piece, his gentle voice lulling her to sleep.

She woke the next morning to an unyielding silence. Yoohyeon stepped down from her bay window and quietly left the safety of her room to find the living room of their apartment in shambles and her father in the middle, his face cradled in his hands, “Dad?” when he met her gaze she didn't need to hear him say it, she knew her mother had left.

Mingyu had never expected to fall in love and yet here they were, cuddled with one another in their comfy little studio apartment binging the Great British Baking Show, “God that looks delicious, could you make that?” Wonwoo peeked over his shoulder at Mingyu, the light from the tv reflecting off his glasses. He was beautiful, Wonwoo still knocked the breath out of Mingyu.

“I could try.” He smiled playfully, leaning his head on Wonwoo's shoulder, “When do you want it?”

Wonwoo chuckled, and pushed himself off the bed, “Now!”

Within an hour they were enjoying sugary pastries and coffee at their little kitchen table that sat in front of their only window that overlooked the city, “Ya know, we could make some good money off of these.” Wonwoo sighed contently as he snatched another.

Mingyu smiled fondly and shook his head, “they're ok I guess.”

Wonwoo scoffed, “Just ok? These are incredible!” he gripped Mingyu's free hand, “We could start our own little coffee shop, use that business degree you're studying for something you'll actually enjoy.”

“Stop joking around.” Mingyu looked towards the bustling city below, the nice evening they were having beginning to sour. He loved the idea of owning a business with Wonwoo, he loved the idea, but how could he pursue that when his family was relying on him to eventually take over the family business.

“Mingyu...” Mingyu met his boyfriend's eyes, he was concerned, “I'm sorry, I know you don't have a choice... I just wish you could put yourself first for once.”

Mingyu brought Wonwoo's hand to his lips and smiled, “I've got you don't I? What more could I need?” how could he ask for more when he'd been given so much already?

present day

Yoobin hated parties, she envied Mingyu and Yoohyeon who seemed completely at home in this kind of environment. Clad in a dark blue glittery dress Yoohyeon had stuffed her into, Lee Yoobin stood huddled with her introverted soulmate Minghao who, while borderline antis social as well, wasn't the least bit perturbed by the crowd. The man in question lounged on a plush armchair, a glass of wine in hand all the while Yoobin was self consciously pulling at the hem of her dress.

“Do we really have to stay until after midnight.” she grumbled, glaring daggers at Minghao who chuckled.

“It's New Years Dami, one night away from your text books could do you some good.” Minghao said casually, though Yoobin could see where his eyes lay, she knew him all too well.

“Uh huh? You know if you just told Yoohyeon you were madly in love with her you might get to move on with your life.” it was a low blow but man did she want to get out of there. The twitch of his lips had her regretting her words, “I'm sorry, I'm just... concerned you know who might show up.”

The confusion on his face lasted for only a moment, “Oh , I hadn't even thought of that.” he sat up and looked around, relaxing when he didn't see the person in question, “Look, I get the wound is still pretty new, if you don't want to risk running into him I get that. Want me to get you a cab?”

Yoobin smiled and shook her head, “no, I think I can manage, thanks Minghao.” she shouldered her bag and walked around the crowd of drunk college students towards the door. It was like trying to swim upstream, Yoobin was pushed back and forth and inevitably stumbled into a man, “Sorry, excuse me...”

“You ok- Oh, hey, it's Seokmin's ex!” She cringed away from the boy who she instantly disliked, she looked up at him and disliked him even more-It was Soonyoung. The goofball had a light in his eye and a red solo cup in his hand, his hair disheveled and his clothes a mess.

Yoobin needed to get out of there, “Excuse me, I gotta-”

“Hey guys, sorry we're late!”

She was to late, there he stood with his annoyingly perfect girlfriend blocking her exit. She couldn't move, she was frozen and that god damn Hoshi just had to make things worse, “Seokmin! Look who showed up!” with his arm wrapped around her, he guided her towards the last two people on earth she wanted to see, “Hey man!”

“Hoshi... Dami...” She had to give it to Seokmin, most people wouldn't notice how awkward this situation was for them if they were just paying attention to him, she on the other hand resembled a corpse, “How've you been?”

She was going to kill Hoshi.
