spring rain

a week later...

An eraser tapped against her desk whilst Yuna hummed to herself. In her fingers, she held a pencil that was held together by glue and tape though it still threatened to snap if she decided to add a little more pressure. Glancing at the tool, a small smile formed on her lips. A breeze tickled her heart. It reminded her of the day her and Eunbi met. Scratching down quick words, Yuna hummed a spontaneous melody.

“Even after time, it’s the same if it hurts this much. I thought it’d heal when the scar forms.” She tapped the pencil against her chin.

Although a flood of emails were coming through and the absurd knocking at her door, Yuna saw herself in between what’s real and what’s not.

“Is it like the rain on a... on a spring night? Like a rain shower that passes without an umbrella.”

That earthy scent wafted into her nostrils and water trickled from the clouds. Yuna opened her eyes, meeting with a darkened skh. It was on the verge of raining as the clouds faded to a soft purple—some a bit grey on the other end. The ocean rippled silently, droplets of rain falling beside her while the thunder beneath the clouds roared. Yuna looked up at the rain as if it were a spring night. A girl’s face flashed in her mind, lightning spidering along the clouds to form a web. Sometimes, Yuna wished she didn't think of Yewon but she couldn't help it.

After all, this song is written for her.

“I’m sure I’ll fall in love again… like this unstoppable love rain—“

“Yah! Choi Yuna how come you didn’t open your door?!” Yerin came barging into her room and slammed the wooden door against the wall.

She jumped in her seat. “God ing hell!” Tossing her papers to the side, Yuna sat exasperated as the ocean along with Yewon vanished. “You know there’s something called knocking?!”

Yerin scoffed. “And you also know final exams are coming up soon, right?”

Yuna froze. “Uh… what?”

The older girl’s jaw dropped. It was the most important time of their school year and yet it baffled her that Yuna didn’t even know. Yerin straightened her posture, clearing , and strided closer.

“I know what’s this about.” She waved a finger in the air. “Eunbi maybe?”

Yuna choked on air and slapped the older girl on the shoulder. “Eunbi?! I literally saw her a week ago—why would I be thinking about her?!”

Yerin shrugged. “Yewon then?”

Choking on air a second time, she shot a glare at the older girl. Yerin couldn’t have known, could she? Yuna pressed her lips together and slumped on the chair. No. No way Yerin knew about her feelings—

“Given your expression, I guess you really do like Yewon.”

They paused. Yuna and Yerin sat in silence as they stared at each other with blank expressions. Inside of the younger girl, her heart was jumped into —finding itself lodged. Yuna tapped her knees. Ignoring the fact she was just in the midst of continuing her song, influenced by Yewon, was she that obvious? No, if she was Yewon would’ve known, right? Her jaw slowly started to hang open as a wave of heat washed over her whole body.

Meanwhile, Yerin her chin like a detective, closing her eyes and hummed to herself.

“Hmm, too bad Yewon is obviously straight as .”She  ended up shrugging and looked back at Yuna. An expression of confusion covered her face, unfazed by her sudden reveal of her knowledge. “Why are you looking at me like that?”

Her leg, much to her unpleasant surprise, bounced up and down. “How did you…”

“Know?” Yerin finished her sentence with a smug smirk. “Choi Yuna, have you seen what you look like when you’re with Yewon?” Casually crossing her arms, she sat on the corner of her desk,

“I swear your face looks like you ate something super sweet—or was it sour?”

Her gut stirred unruly, ignoring Yerin’s last comment with a grim smile. Hiding her feelings was something she was never good at. She’d keep her face straight in times of sadness and smile when she was happy. Simple but effective. Yuna looked down at the floor as Yerin eyed her. Vulnerable. That’s how she felt when Yerin looked at her. Not even Sojung could make her realize the abnormal crawling in her stomach or the burning holes Yerin drilled into her. The girl was reading her like an open book.

Seeing that she wasn’t going to respond sooner or later, Yerin patted Yuna’s head. “Are you going to confess?”

Yuna scoffed at the word. “It’s a busy week, I’m not going to burden her with my confession.” Thinking of more ways to get Yerin off her , she sighed. Not only to lower her hopes but Yuna simply couldn’t bear the thought of getting rejected. “Plus, I might ruin our friendship.”

“C’mon! Yewon’s not like that—she’ll still be friends with you!” Yerin laughed as if it wasn’t the most offensive thing she could’ve said.

“Are you saying she’ll reject me?”

“Well… um…” Yerin had already dug the hole for herself. A part of her was going to jump into it and say: “yes Yuna you’ll probably get rejected because Yewon is… kinda straight” but the other half pulled her away from the hole. Sighing, Yerin gently knocked Yuna on the head with her knuckle—a habit she picked up from Sojung.

“If it makes you feel better, I was basically rejected by Sojung when we first met.”

“How is that supposed to make me feel—“ Yuna stopped to take the information in.“—wait what?”

With a small nod and pursed lips, Yerin laughed it off. “What? Sojung’s beautiful you have to admit that.” The girl pressed a hand against her chest as memories flowed in from the first year of college. “Ahhh, I still remember when she gave me the most deadly stare and walked away~”

Eyeing the girl, Yuna wiggled her eyebrows. “Do you still…?”

In a too quick of response, Yerin immediately shook her head. “No! She’s literally my best friend, goodness gracious Choi Yuna.”

“I was just asking!”

Yerin shrugged. “Yah enough of me, aren’t we supposed to be talking about you…”

And the conversation Yuna was just... dying to hear.

“Finish the sentence.” Yuna said monotonously.

“...and Eunbi?”

With that Yuna pushed Yerin out of her room. There was no point in going back to writing her song, the clouds had passed and her mind was already messy... with Eunbi but she would never admit that—especially to Yerin. She let out a soft sigh. The thumping of heart rang in her ears and pink strand popped up in her mind but before Yuna could shake off the thought, Yerin pushed against her hold.

“Wait wait! I forgot to tell you!” Yerin screamed out.

Rolling her eyes, Yuna crossed her arms. She was already sick of her antics.“What is it?”

A giant grin formed on the latter’s face, one that made Yuna’s stomach flip.

With a smug grin,Yerin leaned forward and tapped the tip of Yuna’s nose. “Since we barely did anything this semester, we’re attending the festival this year.”

Sighing, she shook her head at her friend. “You just want an excuse to drink!”

Yerin gasped. “Who do you think I am Choi Yuna?”

The girl resumed her act of pushing Yerin out of her room. However, Yerin was still oh so persistent and seeing that Yuna was a big dazed, it took less of an effort to push against her once again.

“Hey! I am not working my off just so I can do nothing back at home!” Yerin gestured: waving her hands around to further press her point. “Plus, Yewon and Eunbi will definitely be coming~!”

Unbelievable.

Clicking her tongue, Yuna used all her strength to push the girl out of her room. “If you keep on talking, I am going to kick your—“

“I’m just saying!” Yerin jumped back in defense. “Anyway last week of May! Don’t let your parents take up that space because we, Choi Yuna, are going to a festival!”

Before she could curse the girl out, Yerin had ran away with a loud "woohoo" and slammed her own door in her face. Yuna refrained from chasing the girl. She could very well catch up if she wanted though it’s require too much work.

Trudging to her desk, Yuna sweeped the messy papers and stacked them.

"A festival... huh." She gazed at her lyric sheets, some with random scribbles of flowers or half-finished lyrics that she couldn't bother to finish. So many useless drafts but she never found the heart to throw them away. No matter how messy the lyrics were.

Yuna looked up at the ceiling and frowned. "I wonder if I..." an image of her guitar flashed in her head.

"...could play for Yewon there."

She shook her head at the thought. No matter how much her heart longed for the girl to hear her feelings, Yuna was just too nervous. Her fingers trembled as the desire to just confess grew inside of her. Maybe Yerin was right about confessing soon. All she wanted was for Yewon to listen to her through music—through the song made from her heart.

Yuna gently shuffled through the papers—stopping at a blank sheet with only the title written at the top. The title that read: Night Drive. Nostalgia filled her and in the split second she looked at her paper, Yuna saw flashing city lights in the dead of night. Instruments began playing as the papers slipped from her hands. The dark night was a contrast to her bright ocean. In a sense, everything felt far away—the ocean, people, sounds, and the list goes on. Yuna took a deep breath. The aftermath of rain was lingering in the air and dew stuck to the windows of a car as the moon twinkled above her, brighter than the steer lamp beside her.

She cleaned up the rest of her papers, placing them in a folder with a heavy sigh.

“I can’t even drive, who am I kidding?” She mused herself and threw her body on the bed.

As much as she should be studying, like Yerin was implying, Yuna had lost all motivation. Still she was a great student even as she goes on her phone to swipe meaninglessly on SNS. Humming to the tune of her song, Yuna’s scrolling spree was interrupted by a message from Eunbi.

“Eunbi?” Yuna muttered, tapping on the message. She still wasn’t used to the fact she had Eunbi’s number—the way the pink haired girl would act around her seemed almost too bashful for Eunbi to text first. Nonetheless, Yuna smiled and found her mood increasing.

“Yunaaaaaaaa !”

A chuckle left her lips.

What do you need?”

On the other side, the girl pouted at Yuna’s message however a smile snuck onto her face.

“I need you!”

A bubble grew in Yuna’s throat, lightly coughing it out as she read Eunbi’s message over three times. She couldn't deny the blush on her cheeks but it felt as if she was betraying her feelings for Yewon and quickly pretended as if she wasn't just smiling and blushing at Eunbi's text.

“Yah, what are you on?”

Paint thinner kekeke”

“What?!” Yuna screamed out. A wave of sweat covered her body although it instantly evaporated. For a second: worry dripped in . Still, there was the possibility of the girl getting addicted to the fume. Yuna’s heart clenched in on itself and quickly typed a response.

“I forgot you major in art… I was worried ;;”

As she typed, Yuna looked at her text. No. No she wasn’t going to send that!

“I forgot you major in art ;;”

Eunbi, on the receiving end, laughed at the girl’s text. A part of her wondered if Yuna was worried about her current state. She laughed to herself and shook the thought out of her head.

“What‘s my water shield doing right now?”

Yuna stared at the blatant ‘my’, her heart rate increasing in a matter of seconds.

“I should be studying but I’m resting for now~ you?”

“kekekekeke I’m texting my water shield!”

She couldn’t help but smile at Eunbi’s childish words.

“Wait what’re you doing texting me??? Go study!!!” Eunbi sent the text with a pout on her lips. “What an irresponsible student.” She said to herself.

“But I want to talk to you more~~~”

Eunbi could already imagine the puppy-like look in Yuna’s eyes and the stars begging her to continue talking instead of studying like the girl should be doing.

“Fine but go study in 20 minutes”

“Oh you want to talk to me that long huh ;)”

Resisting the urge to throw her phone, Eunbi grew hotter and pressed her lips together.

“You’re the one who wanted to talk to me in the first place!”

Yuna chuckled. Usually, she didn’t text anyone—apart from Yewon when she wanted to or when Yerin starts spamming her phone about something unimportant. Yet with Eunbi, it was almost as if she could feel her presence next to her. Yuna smiled and brushed her fingers over the screen.

“Oh Eunbi, I still have to return your pencil”

“What pencil”

Yuna smacked her forehead.

“I’m hurt, you don’t remember when we first met ?”

“Ohhh that pencil” Eunbi smiled. The pencil she'd lent to her when Yuna was practically begging for one. “Just keep it”

The latter raised her eyebrows. “But it’s yours”

“It’s fine, I want you to have something to remember me by anyway”

Eunbi shook her head at the text but before she could delete the message, her finger slipped, dropping her phone on her chest and sending the message. She groaned as the screen hit her chin. However, Eunbi was too busy panicking about the text Yuna just sent to worry about the throbbing on her face.

“Ah I see, when did you get so brave?”

“Oh my god did I really send that?!” The pink-haired girl screamed to herself. “No! I already said I need you—why would I even say that?!” Eunbi slammed her head against her bed as embarrassment filled her from the bottom up.

Placing her phone on her chest, Eunbi turned her head to the bedside table. A royal purple cloth laid on top of it. The handkerchief had been scrunched up in her pocket for so long that it’d gained wrinkles. She blushed. At least Yuna’s smell didn’t go away. Shaking her head, Eunbi picked her phone back up.

“Don’t get me wrong!!! I still have your handkerchief”

“Oh you can keep that”

She furrowed her eyebrows. “But this… is like actually yours…” glancing at said handkerchief, the gold embroidery stitched along the edges of the fabric and small letters that read ‘Choi Yuna’.

Meanwhile, the said Choi Yuna glanced at Eunbi's own belonging that was in her hold and currently sitting on her desk. Yuna's cheeks puffed into a smile and giggled.

What if I want you to have something to remember me by?”

And send.

“Yuna! What a little—!” Eunbi yelled to herself. “Such a tease…” the girl said with a slight huff.

“You're annoying, water shield.”

“You mean… "my" water shield ;)”

Eunbi flushed at the message. What’s stopping her from stomping to Yuna’s dorm? Nothing but maybe the fact that she didn’t know what room did. Falling down on the mattress, she typed furiously with a blush still present on her cheeks.

“Go study.”

“Nooooo I don’t wanna”

“Yes you do”

“Jung Eunbi !”

“What”

A devious smile formed on Yuna’s lips.

"Why would I go study when I can see you?"

Just as she calculated, Eunbi squealed at the message—unintentionally of course. Call it a slip of the mouth of you would.

"And you will... on the last week of May ^^"

Yuna made an ‘o’ with .

"That won't stop me! I'll visit you in class if I have to!!!"

Eunbi's heart fluttered at her text. "Tsk tsk, you can just visit me in the art building this weekend~"

"where?"

"Remember the place we met a second time? There"

A gasp escaped her lips. Well, suddenly it made a lot more sense. Question was: how did she get lost there in the first place? Yuna shrugged. She'll find a way somehow.

"Hehe I'll surprise you then"

Eunbi had sent an eye rolling emoji yet reality was: she smile, one that stretched from ear to ear as her heart bloomed into something she didn't want it to. Clutching her shirt, she couldn't help but notice the strange throbbing of her heart and the permanent smile whenever she talked to Yuna.

"I'll be waiting for you"

The flower in Eunbi's heart trembled and the storm in Yuna's head eased. While the two girls both stared at their phones, it was almost as if they could see each other. A butterfly fluttered in Yuna’s stomach, something she used to feel around Yewon. The wings of the butterfly were a soft yellow—the color of happiness. Meanwhile, Eunbi hid behind her phone, flushed red and let a large grin take over her lips. As they left their devices screen flat on their chest, that same butterfly flew to Eunbi—tickling her cheek while it floated around her room. Reaching a finger out, the butterfly landed on it and its yellow wings faded to a deep red that flapped together before vanishing into thin air in the form of glowing fragments.

The color red could describe a lot of things. However, the red Eunbi saw in the butterfly's wings was one she didn't wish to see. It was what Yuna felt for Yewon. What Sojung felt for her.

That day, Yuna’s heart could finally be happy.

That day, Eunbi's heart was slowly beginning to turn red.

Chapter 17: Omg I feel so bad for both Yuna and Eunbi. I understand Yuna and how her feelings appeared and why they are so strong because it's perfectly portrayed how it all just happened. But i think sometimes we have to free ourselves from certain feelings if they will never be reciprocated. Of course it's not easy, but she shouldn't lose the chance to meet love in another way just because she can't let go of the one she feels now. Though sometimes after confessing you might be ready to really move on. Idk, it's honestly hard, and Yujuna are just so precious and they seem to be made for each other so I'm rooting for them while I cry because this writing is so emotional.

I hope you're doing well, author-nim, I'm sure you know about the news... It's being hard on all of us, buddies. So I just want to say, stay strong and come back whenever you want. I'll be waiting for a next chapter if you ever decide to continue. I'll support you! Thank you so much for this story, fighting!

Chapter 16: It's been some time since the last time I read a chapter of this fic (because... Life) and now that I'm reading again I wanted to say a few things.
First, thank you so much for writing so beautifully and in a way that makes the reader feel so many things. I don't know how to explain it, but I really like your way of writing, and somehow it gets to make me emotional every time. Like, I don't know, especially with Yujuna, they're making my heart soft and sad at the same time. I really want them to be happy together because please they are so preocupes and this story just screams for them. Like, I will suffer a lot if they don't end up together. But it's obviously your choice hahaha.
Anyways, thank you for writing, I really want to keep reading this fic till the end because it's simply so good.
